BURSARIES VS SCHOLARSHIPS At the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus a Scholarship is a non-repayable award, usually based on academic merit and covers a student’s educational expenses (tuition, examinations, books, boarding etc.) throughout their university tenure, once a B+ average is maintained. A Bursary is a non-repayable, ONE-TIME award based on merit and/or financial need and/or extra-curricular activities. It should be noted that at the St. Augustine Campus, some donors offer a Scholarship/Bursary. What this means is, a standard payment is made, which can then be renewed once the awardee maintains the academic standard.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES Scholarships and Bursaries are advertised on all Notice Boards normally between January to May each year. All scholarships advertisements are sent to Faculty Deans, Guild of Students, the Library, Director, Student Services, the Manager, Student Activity Centre, and are also published in the daily newspapers. Applications must be submitted online at http://sta.uwi.edu/scholarships/ by MAY 31, 2018. ALL APPLICANTS are required to complete the Extra-Curricular Activities Statement, under the Supporting Documents section. Kindly note that your application would be pending until this document is received. Students applying for a scholarship or bursary based wholly or partially on financial need, kindly refer to the Supporting Documents section for the document that must accompany your application. If you are applying for a scholarship/bursary which requires you or your parents to be a member of a Credit Union or other Association (e.g. T&TUTA, TATECO, Teachers’ Credit Union), kindly indicate the required information in SECTION D of the online application. A scholarship/bursary may NOT be held jointly with any other scholarship/bursary where together the value exceeds 25% of maintenance cost (accommodation, meals, personal expenses) plus tuition and miscellaneous fees. STUDENTS TRANSFERRING TO ANOTHER FACULTY IN 2018/2019 A student who obtains a scholarship/bursary to pursue a programme in one Faculty will not be allowed to keep the same award if he/she transfers to another Faculty. He/she should re-apply from his/her new Faculty at the appropriate time. Please note the following: ELIGIBILITY 1. Only registered FULL-TIME students and students going into full-time study from Level 2 will be

considered for a scholarship or bursary. 2. PART-TIME students who have completed Level 1 of study and are transitioning to full-time in Level

2 will also be eligible. 3. Students from the Faculty of Medical Sciences who have completed Phase 1 examinations are also

eligible to submit an application. 4. Off-site students expected to register in Level 2 at the St. Augustine Campus in August 2018 from

Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (St. Lucia), Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College (St. Kitts) and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College will be eligible to apply for a scholarship or bursary.

5. If you are the holder of a Continuing Award and have not maintained your academic standard (B+

Average), you are eligible to submit a new application. INELIGIBILITY You are deemed ineligible for a Scholarship or Bursary if: 1. you have applied for leave of absence; have been required to withdraw; writing examinations without attending classes for the 2016/2017 and/or 2017/2018 academic years; 2. you are a recipient of another award; 3. you are expected to complete your course of study at the end of the 2017/2018 academic year. Note: If you are the holder of a Continuing Award and have maintained the required academic standard, you are NOT required to submit another application or apply for another award.
