ACCESS TO HIGHER EDUCATIONLevel 3Access to Higher Education Diplomas are a well-established and very successful route into university-level study for adult learners without traditional entry requirements. The one-year, full-time course is suitable for adults aged 19 years and over who wish to pursue a career change or need to develop confidence in and practice their study skills.

ADULT AND PROFESSIONAL COURSESThese courses are a great first step into Higher Education and are specifically designed to develop your skills across a broad range of areas. If you want to improve your employment prospects or want to progress in your career, then these courses are a great choice.

BTEC HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATES (HNC) Level 4/DIPLOMAS (HND) Level 5These Higher Education qualifications focus on industry skills and are valued by employers as an alternative to university. Both are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tests that you complete throughout the

course. They are designed to lead straight to a career in industry or on to further study at university. HNCs usually take one year full-time or two years part-time to complete, and then you may move on to a HND, which takes one year of full-time study to complete. You may then choose to top-up your HND with a further one or two years of study at university to convert it into a full Honours Degree.

FOUNDATION DEGREE (Fd)Level 5A Foundation Degree is a degree-level qualification that combines academic study with workplace learning. These courses, which can be a FdSc or FdA, are designed with employers to equip people with the relevant skills and knowledge for the workplace, combining classroom study with real-life workplace learning. FDs take between 2-4 years to complete, depending on the study route you choose. It is the equivalent of the first two years of a full Honours Degree, and you may have the option to top-up and convert it into a full Honours Degree with an additional year of study at university.

I have qualifications in music and I used to be involved in singing. I gave this up to be a nursery nurse, which I enjoyed, but felt that I wanted to change direction and teach older children. I’ve always enjoyed the sciences so I decided to enrol on the Access course as an alternative route to A Levels.

“The course has been amazing and the tutors have been the best. I was scared at first but, with all the support I’ve had, I’m now going to the University of Chester to study a BA (Hons) Degree in Chemistry. Following this, I will study a PGCE to qualify me to teach in high schools. I’m so grateful to the College as I wouldn’t be going touniversity without their help and support.

Ewen MacRuryMechanical Engineering BTEC Higher National Diploma

I’d been working for Bentley as a contractor and eventually the opportunity came up for a position in the team that I was working with. I applied and was offered a job working on concept validation. To support my job role, I enrolled on the HNC in Mechanical Engineering at Cheshire College - South & West and completed the first year with a Distinction Grade. In order to secure funding for the second year of my HND, I converted to being an Apprentice to continue my studies.

I will continue studying by topping-up my HND to an Engineering Degree which will really support me in performing my job role at Bentley Motors and will hopefully help me to progress further in the future.

SPORTS COACHING(FdSc)

Sports Coaching is about developing and improving performance and providing positive experiences for participants with a range of sporting aspirations.

Sport remains high on the political agenda, as the government continues to look to this area to make a sustainable contribution to the achievement of its wider policy objectives related to health, education and social inclusion, and to uphold the heightened sense of national pride generated by the legacy of the 2012 Olympic Games. Sport England is consistently looking to develop the national sporting infrastructure and workforce to enable these objectives to be met. The

Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching is specifically designed for those who wish to pursue or further a career in sports coaching, or indeed to go on to study at a higher level in the discipline area. It opens the door to a number of career routes and opportunities. The programme has been developed in conjunction with the University of Chester.

NEXT STEPS Upon successful completion of the programme, you will gain an FdSc in Sports Coaching. Learners may progress on to further professional coaching qualifications. For learners who want to top-up, their Foundation Degree leads directly into the final year of the BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching Top-up Degree programme at the University of Chester (Warrington Campus).

CONSTRUCTIONMANAGEMENT BSc (Hons) Top-up Degree

This Level 6 programme is validated by the University of Derby and designed to top-up an existing relevant Level 5 qualification to a full Degree. The programme is underpinned by three main themes:

• The Management element focuses on the technology/design process and the management of the site production process. It identifies the key external and internal factors affecting the performance of a construction organisation by the use of analytical and implementation tools and procedures to prepare competitive action plans.

• The Interdisciplinary Professional Practice element of the programme takes into consideration essential aspects of the industry such as health and safety, aspects of contract law and project management skills.

NEXT STEPS Whilst it is acknowledged that the majority of learners on the BSc (Hons) are already in employment in the construction industry, careers advice and guidance is available at the College for all learners. Abbie taylor Technical Theatre BA (Hons) top-up Degree

I started sixth form and after the first year of AS Levels I didn’t get the grades I expected. I started the second year, but soon realised I needed to change. A relative told me about the College so I dropped in to speak to tutors and started on the course the next day. The course really suits me and the tutors go out of their way to tailor the course delivery to your individual needs. They also share their contacts with you and help you to find work experience and sometimes paid work.

“I’ve just completed my Level 6 Top-up Degree and I am embarking on my career as a Freelance Stage Technician. I have work booked in for the next months plus I’ll be working on a pantomime production at Christmas.
