Established in 1988, the School of Computer Engineering (SCE), under the College of Engineering in Nanyang Technological University (NTU), was offers undergraduate and graduate programmes in Computer Engineering and Computer Science.
NTU is an internationally reputed research-intensive tertiary institution and provides a broad-based education covering science and technology, business and the arts, entrepreneurial and leadership skills to prepare students for the global working world.
SCE programmes combine a distinctive blend of theory and practice with critical hands-on experience, and project-based learning. Communication and professional skills enhanced through carefully selected industrial attachments complement the programme ensuring our students are ready to meet goals and rise to challenges as part of a global workforce. In addition, overseas exchanges under our Global Immersion Programme with international prestigious universities are encouraged.
Our graduates are found in widely diverse fields. The exciting range of areas of work includes the following:
Gaming, Digital Media and AnimationIT ConsultancyResearch and DevelopmentFinancial and Banking ServicesTechnopreneurship
Our students learn critical skills for life-long learning and innovation in the field.
The top 10 in-demand jobs in 2011 did not exist in 2004. The School of Computer Engineering (SCE) prepares students for jobs that don’t yet exist; to leverage technologies that
haven’t been invented yet in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.

undergrAduAte curriculum overview
Graduates from sCe
The School of Computer Engineering offers two direct honours undergraduate programmes - Computer Engineering (CE) and Computer Science (CS). Students will be awarded the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree upon completion of their four-year programme. Those who excel in their first year may be steered into the Accelerated Bachelor’s Programme (ABP) and complete the programme in three and a half years.
Computer Engineering (CE)
The programme is a distinctive fusion of computer engineering and electronics engineering. Our computer engineering graduates are trained in electronic engineering, software design and hardware-software integration instead of only software engineering or electronic engineering.
Computer Science (CS)
The course provides a more focused study of the theoretical foundations of information and computation, as well as of practical techniques for their implementation and application in computer systems.
Key Differences
While there are some shared topics in CE and CS, including computer architecture, networks, and information storage and management, the differences are seen in the emphasis placed at algorithmic and conceptual levels. The CS programme does not cover circuits and basic electronics, digital communications and the like. The curriculum instead focuses more on software design and construction.
The key difference between a Computer Science course and a Science degree is the focus on practice-oriented application of computer science foundations. This is evident in the mandatory industrial attachment, group innovation and design projects, and capstone projects in the final year, and several other mini-projects throughout the course.

Students also have the option to pursue electives, general education subjects as well as in-depth studies in their chosen field for a well-rounded education. Integrating theory and training, these programmes are complemented by coursework including group and individual project work. Students will also have the opportunity to pursue an Industrial Attachment (IA) in their third year of study. The IA is of varying durations and can be conducted within a private or public organisation, locally or overseas.
Computer Engineering incorporating Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME)
SSME fuses aspects of established fields such as computer science, operations research, engineering, management sciences, business strategy social and cognitive sciences, and legal sciences. This revolutionary multi-disciplinary research and academic effort has been incorporated throughout the curriculum at SCE. The programme has been developed in collaboration with International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) and supported by Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA).
For more information on SSME, please visit http://sce.ntu.edu.sg/CurrentStudents/Undergraduate/Pages/cs-ssme.aspx
“The curriculum of Computer Science really gives you a large exposure to the field of Information Technology, from Software development to machine learning to networks. It has been a very taxing but very fulfilling experience as well. SCE ensures that students possess the basic skills as well as those necessary to pursue any IT related career in the future. I have also been given plenty of opportunities to build my soft skills through group presentations and group projects. The stellar internship programmes that NTU provides are very good opportunities to gain real world experience and to network with professionals from local companies, MNCs or even overseas offices.”

Double Degree ProgrammesDouble degree programmes are specialised degrees that combine two disciplines that complement each other significantly – equipping students with core engineering skills as well as a broad skill-set to last a lifetime.
Nanyang Business School (NBS) and School of Computer Engineering (SCE)
Students will be trained in the fundamentals and the combined application of both fields – engineering and business. A hybrid curriculum has been specially prepared to seamlessly integrate both computing/engineering and business elements. At the end of four years, students will earn two degrees – Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Engineering (Computer Engineering/Computer Science).
For more information on the programme, please visit http://www3.ntu.edu.sg/compbiz/#
School of Computer Engineering (SCE) and School of Humanities and Social Sciences
The 5-year programme combines the synergies of engineering and economics, with a deep emphasis on the fundamentals of both disciplines. Embodying the nimbleness of mind of an economist and the structured logic of engineering, graduates will be able to work in both the engineering, and financial and business services industries.

“The curriculum for this course is very well integrated. The module combinations are very carefully thought out and it reflects how much
effort both schools had put in for this unique programme. Between a professional degree and
a general degree, I do not need to make any difficult choice. The course provides me the best
of both worlds in one integrative package, and that’s the aspect that I like most.

Accreditation
SCE’s B.Eng. Computer Engineering and Computer Science programmes are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board, Institute of Engineers, Singapore (IES) and the Blue Ribbon Commission (BRC). IES is now a member of the Washington Accord.
IES is the Singapore signatory to the Washington Accord, an international agreement, to provide a mechanism for mutual recognition of the substantial equivalence of engineering academic programmes in satisfying the academic requirements for the practice of engineering at the professional level. The Washington Accord is an agreement between the bodies responsible for accrediting professional engineering degree programmes in each of the signatory countries. It recognises the substantial equivalency of programmes accredited by those bodies, and recommends that graduates of accredited programmes in any of the signatory countries be recognised by the other countries as having met the academic requirements for entry to the practice of engineering. The Washington Accord was signed in 1989.
BRC awarded programmes are recognised in being able to provide quality Academic Culture, Academic Experience, Institutional Development, Lifelong Learning and Employability, and Student Life. These areas are wide ranging, and aim to enhance among other things, the quality of faculty, excellence in teaching and effectiveness in learning, the undergraduate curriculum, learning beyond the classroom, campus life and residential education, lifelong learning and employability, and support and services that the university administration provides.
