THE BUSINESS SCHOOL LOCATION
Oxford Brookes University is spread
over three campuses at Harcourt Hill,
Headington and Wheatley. The Business
School is located at Wheatley, a leafy
80-acre site just six miles from Oxford
city centre and easily accessible on the
inter-campus Brookes Bus.
Wheatley Campus has a range of sports
facilities and there are pubs and shops in
the nearby village.

Although your first priority will be your
studies, there will still be some time to
try new things.
Welfare, social, educational and cultural
needs are centred around the Students’
Union (The SU). The social hub of the
SU at Oxford Brookes is the Helena
Kennedy Student Centre which hosts
performances, film screenings,
workshops, seminars and other events.
They also run numerous clubs and
societies which provide another great
way of meeting people and socialising.
Whether you like sports, music, drama,
photography, or your interests are
cultural, political, environmental or
religious, you will find a club or society
with like-minded people.
Whether you study full-time or part-time
you have access to all the university’s
sports facilities including a fitness suite,
badminton, tennis, squash and
basketball courts, sports teams and a
climbing wall and tower.
ACCOMMODATION FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS
The majority of accommodation is in
Headington and this is the most popular
option for students, with the ease of an
inter-campus bus linking the university
locations. Overall, Oxford Brookes
student villages provide approximately
3,700 single study-bedrooms, of which
850 are catered. Study-bedrooms are
networked so you can gain access to
the internet, university intranet, email
and directories where course materials
are stored.
There is accommodation on the
Wheatley Campus at Lady Spencer
Churchill Hall, a mixed hall of residence
comprising 162 single study-bedrooms
with catering provided for residents
during semesters.
Self-catering accommodation suitable
for independent wheelchair users is
available. You are advised to book early
to secure a place.

I chose Oxford Brookes because it
provided a variety of different courses
and due to the flexibility I had while
choosing my course I could study
Business Management with
International Relations.
There has been a lot of support from
the Business School when it comes
to the development of my degree.
There are many different opportunities
such as studying abroad and the
work placement year.
My course involved a range of group
projects which improved my team
work skills. I wanted to study abroad
to experience living in a different
country and I have gained even more
than I expected from my time at
Brookes.
The fact that Oxford is so close to
London makes it a very convenient
place to study. The city itself offers
many different things from historical
sites to a fun student environment.

I chose Oxford Brookes because they
offered me the course I wanted which
came with the ACCA pass route and
a scheme called AiM (Accountants in
Mentoring), which prepares you for
gaining employment. I also wanted to
study in Oxford as it is a well-known
student city.
My course has taught me a lot of
different lessons, for example, it has
really helped me to see what is really
going on in the world of finance.
We’ve looked at the financial crisis
and we’ve done some of our own
research into it which has helped me
to see the practical side of it.
For me, the best part about studying
in Oxford has been the opportunity to
meet a variety of people and build up
my networks. I also feel that while I
have been studying here, I have been
well supported by my tutors and the
administrative staff.

The theory and practice given at the
lectures/seminars are well balanced
with wide perspectives and expertise
of the tutors.
I have learned a lot about the
professional work environment as
well as theory. I have also gained the
ability to look from a multi-cultural
perspective.
I had the opportunity to practise the
knowledge I gained from the
university during my work placement
at IBM in Turkey. The mentorship
and the feedback of my managers
at IBM helped me to develop my
professional skills.
Since I have returned my experience
on work placement has been very
helpful in my final year as I can look
from a wider angle at situations. All
the staff from administrators to the
tutors have been very helpful.

you with the opportunity to gain paid,

key reasons why the Business School

Work placement: Microsoft, Reading
I was responsible at Microsoft for
supporting the management of the
company’s retail business for 15
countries in CEE and MEA. I was
involved in senior management
meetings where I learnt about how
large multinational corporations run
their business. I was also in charge of
planning, tracking and analysing sales
for the region and reporting the results
to management. By the end of my
placement I had a clearer idea
about the corporate world and had
developed key skills that will help me
in my future career.

apply the industry experience you have

ASSEL MAIDANOVA BA (Hons) Business and Management
I graduated from Oxford Brookes
University Business School in 2010
and I am now working in the valuation
group, Corporate Finance at KPMG.
I enjoy working in an advisory role as
I have the opportunity to deal with
both public and private companies
from various industries. Business and
Management encompasses a wide
range of areas, and it is not limited to
theoretical things like economics,
accounting or finance, but is also
about strategy, psychology and
managing people.
I often have moments when I think,
‘I have been learning about this in the
university and it does apply in real life

CORPORATE CONNECTIONS
As part of the advanced honours
Consultancy Project module, the
Business School has established a
close liaison with IBM Global Business
Solutions, the world’s largest business
consultancy. IBM helps students prepare
for the graduate recruitment process by
presenting workshops on how to get
hired as a graduate in the consultancy
industry. They cover the capabilities they
look for in new consultants, sessions on
life as a consultant delivered by recently
hired graduate consultants and real-life
assessment exercises used at their
recruitment centres.
ACCOUNTANTS IN MENTORING
The Business School is committed to
enhancing the employment prospects
of its graduates. One way that this
has been achieved is through the
establishment of the Accountants in
Mentoring scheme (AiM).
The scheme is designed to help final
year students make a successful
transition between university and
full-time employment.
Qualified accountants and finance
professionals, including several Brookes
alumni, have signed up as mentors.
The mentors cover a broad spectrum of
industries and employers, including the
big four accountancy firms. Students
are able to meet with their mentors to
discuss career options, work on their
CV, improve interview technique,
develop networking skills and establish
career plans.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The UK Border Agency now operates a
points-based system when assessing
applications to work in the UK from
people outside of the European

The University provides support on
academic and welfare issues throughout

students are allocated an Academic
Advisor on arrival. In addition, the
University International Student Advisory
Service provides welfare support, visa
advice and counselling should you need

If you have completed an appropriate course you could be eligible to apply for entry into the second or final year of one of our undergraduate courses. open days annually, on Saturdays in
June, October and November, giving you

SINGLE AND COMBINED HONOURS
A single honours course is the study of
one subject in depth. A combined
honours course allows you to combine
two subjects. You can take either a joint
approach or major in one of the two
subjects. If you take the joint approach,
your workload is balanced between your
two subjects; if you choose to major in
one subject, your accompanying minor
subject accounts for between a third
and a quarter of your overall work.
Combining Business Management
with another subject can improve your
employability prospects and help you
develop an existing passion into a
rewarding career (see page 30).
WORK PLACEMENTS
A key feature of all our undergraduate
courses is the work placement scheme,
which lays the foundations for a
successful career. On Business School
courses the work placement year is
optional, though strongly recommended,
and takes place in the third year of a
four-year course.
YOUR DEGREE STRUCTURE
YOUR DEGREE STRUCTURE
Each course is made up of a number of
modules, which are self-contained units
of study, taught and assessed
independently. Full-time students
normally study eight modules per year
(four in each semester) and each module
is taught using a combination of lectures,
seminars and workshops.
In the first year, depending on the course
you study and whether you have
previously studied Business A-level, you
will typically take six compulsory modules
and choose two further modules from a
range of electives, including the
opportunity to study a language. In the
second year, you will typically study four
compulsory (advanced) modules and
choose four further modules from a
range of electives.
In the final year, you will choose from a
range of honours modules, including a
dissertation, synoptic or independent
study module. This way you study the
core topics within your chosen degree
subject, but also choose to study areas
that are of particular interest to you or
that fit with your career aspirations. Help
and advice in making your choices is
provided by your Academic Advisor
and Programme Tutors. Typical course
structures are illustrated by the charts on
the individual course pages that follow.
Studying at the Business School at Oxford Brookes University means joining one of the mostinnovative undergraduate programmes in the UK. The modular structure of the coursesincorporates an international approach to the study of your degree subject and offers flexibility of choice within each course.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS
After your first and second years you
have the opportunity to gain further work
experience and apply your knowledge
through a summer internship with a
company. Our Work and Voluntary

This course shares a common first year with two other courses: International Business and International Business Management. It is possible to change between these degrees after the first year, offering you maximum flexibility. This course provides you with the skills and understanding you need to succeed in a wide range of business careers.
BA (Hons) BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT SINGLE HONOURS
The distinctive learning approach of this
course is enquiry-based learning, in
which business issues and problems
are explored in realistic contexts,
allowing theory to be examined through
interesting and challenging scenarios.
The first year in particular provides
opportunities for you to identify areas of
your learning where you need particular
support. Later in the course more
emphasis is placed on acquiring subject
knowledge and modules will develop
your ability to learn autonomously and
your skills of reflection.
WORK PLACEMENTS
In your third year you can undertake a
work placement year, an exciting
opportunity to take on a high degree

THE COURSE
In the first year you study a range of

Our relationships with businesses
provide many opportunities for students
to become involved in live case studies
and gain an in-depth understanding of
the contemporary marketing challenges
faced by organisations. Recent visiting
speakers from industry have included
managers from Johnson & Johnson,
Fat Face, Age Concern, BP and
Oxford United Football Club. Our
students are encouraged to undertake
a work placement year in a marketing
role in industry and are supported in
securing one.
Our departmental research focuses on
a variety of marketing areas, including
marketing strategy, brand development,
customer behaviour, the management
of consumer relationships and digital
marketing. Our courses and our
consultancy work are informed by
this research. Staff in the department
write some of the leading marketing
textbooks, routinely publish their
research in international journals and
present keynote talks at high profile
corporate events and conferences.
The Department of Marketing
emphasises an all-round academic
experience for its students; this aims
to enhance life-long learning and
employability skills, in addition to
providing the knowledge base for
a career in marketing and wider
business roles. To achieve this we
focus on maintaining strong links
with industry.
Our graduates are highly sought after
and many major employers, including
Aldi, Game, Tesco and Nielsen come to
the department and talk to our students
about career opportunities in their
businesses.
Our teaching programme is designed
to ensure that our students learn about
current business and marketing issues as
well as gain a sound grounding in theory.
All teaching staff are active researchers
and/or have recent professional or
consultancy experience and we maintain
close links with professional bodies, such
as the Chartered Institute of Marketing
(CIM) and the Institute of Direct Marketing
(IDM).
We collaborate closely with a number of
overseas universities for research, staff
and student exchange and to provide
training and development to international
businesses, most recently Red Bull.
Students have the option to study
overseas (most courses are provided
in English) and we encourage our
marketing students to gain this valuable
experience as it provides opportunities
for students to actively engage with
debates relating to global issues.
Support is provided to students studying
overseas and there is a flexible system
of module credit exchange.

placement, an exciting opportunity for

positions by their placement employer.
CAREER PROSPECTS
This course prepares you for managerial
careers in business, marketing,
marketing communications, retail and
logistics in a range of organisations.
Many go on to graduate traineeships in

PROFESSIONAL BODIES
This degree has been approved and
accredited by the Chartered Institute of
Marketing (CIM) to meet the qualification
criterion for the Chartered Postgraduate
Diploma in Marketing; please note senior
marketing management experience is
required. Graduates qualify for direct
entry to the CIM Professional
Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing.
The Marketing Communications
specialism meets the learning outcomes
of the Institute of Direct Marketing (IDM)
Certificate in Direct and Interactive
Marketing.
THE COURSE
Year 1 provides an integrated and
comprehensive insight into essential
areas of business and marketing
management.
During your second and final years, you
can elect to follow an individually tailored
business and marketing course exploring
additional areas of marketing and/or
wider business interests, providing a wide
range of career choices. Alternatively,
you can choose to specialise in retailing
or marketing communications. Within
the marketing communications
specialism you learn to plan, implement
and evaluate promotional tools, including
advertising and PR. Modules include:
Essentials of Marketing Communications,
Strategic Marketing Communications
and Campaign Management and
Development, preparing you for a career
in marketing communications, whether
working in a marketing services agency
or client side.
Within the retail specialism you learn
to create and deliver a successful
service experience within an international
retail context, from producer to end
consumer. Modules include: Creating
and Delivering the Retail Brand, Buying,
Merchandising and Store Design and
International Retail Strategy. This
specialism prepares you for a career in
the retail sector or within those
organisations supplying goods and
services to it.

managers from companies including
Ernst & Young, Pepsico UK, Honda
UK and Royal Dutch Shell. For further

The main focus of research within the
department is on how accountability is
achieved, explored from both theoretical
and practical perspectives and
encompassing a range of disciplinary
and methodological approaches.
Research is currently conducted into
corporate governance, external reporting
and internal control structures and
processes in a range of organisations,
including large UK Plcs, local and
central government and charities. In
the information management area,
our expertise focuses on information
systems in small and medium
enterprises and teleworking.
The Department of Accounting,
Finance and Economics focuses on
providing an excellent, all-round
academic experience for students
with an international perspective,
and our graduates are highly sought
after in accounting and economics
disciplines.
Teaching at undergraduate level is
undertaken by our international team of
staff who are active researchers and/or
who have a professional background.
This means you learn about current
issues as well as gaining a sound
theoretic grounding. Our courses can
offer exemptions from professional
exams.
Our staff maintain close links with
relevant professional bodies, leading
practitioners and employers such as
Grant Thornton, PWC, Critchleys,
Financial Times and the Department
of Transport, who come and speak to
our students.
The department has established a third
sector study group and is currently
developing research into the governance
of third sector organisations, particularly
charities. This is building on the
Accounting for Charities, Engaging
Students (ACES) project, established
by the Accounting and Finance courses,
in which student volunteers are trained
by a local accountancy firm to assist
local charities with basic accounting.
Our undergraduate accounting
programme offers exemptions from
the Association of Chartered Certified
Accountants (ACCA), the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in England and
Wales (ICAEW) and the Chartered

The Accounting and Information
Management pathway equips you to

FOUNDATION DEGREESBy studying for a foundation degree at one of our partner institutions in the UK you will learn thetransferable skills and gain the knowledge you need to respond to future developments in theworkplace. Successful completion of one of these courses may allow you to progress to the finalyear of a related bachelor’s degree at the Business School or within the partner institute (whereapplicable).
FOUNDATION DEGREE (ARTS) BUSINESS, MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNICATIONSThis work-based course develops the knowledge and skills needed for a career in
business, management or communications. Designed with input from employers and
expert staff, and drawing on your previous work experience, this course will allow you
to explore the fields of business, management and communications, while maintaining
a holistic view of business within a variety of contexts.
Taught at three Further Education Colleges – Abingdon and Witney College, Solihull
College and Swindon College – this foundation degree aims to develop the key skills
that graduates need when entering or progressing within the workplace. In addition,
subject to validation, this course will also be taught at Bridgwater College and
Brooklands College. The course has three strands:
� The Business strand introduces you to the scope and functions of business,
developing your understanding of the environments within which organisations
operate.
� The Management strand takes basic management concepts and theories to a
contemporary and practical level, integrating organisational behaviour aspects
with management and decision making.
� The Communications strand looks at the interaction and communication between
staff and internal and external customers and stakeholders.
Alongside these practice-based strands, the course also develops your professional,
academic and research skills. In your first year, you will be introduced to areas such as
critical thinking and academic writing. In the second year, you will focus on research
skills and developing skills of enquiry in preparation for your work-based business
project.
This will help preparation for your honours component modules should you progress
on to the final year of an honours degree. Your progression options are: � BA (Hons) Business and Management delivered at Oxford Brookes University� BA (Hons) Business and Management delivered at Solihull College� BA (Hons) Business, Management and Communications delivered at
Swindon College.
This foundation degree prepares you to pursue a career in business within a variety of
contexts. You will gain practical management and communication skills, transferable
within a range of industries and sectors.

Foundation degrees are designed jointly with employers to equip you with the technical knowledgeyou need in your working life. They are taught at our partner institutions and accredited by OxfordBrookes University.
FOUNDATION DEGREE (ARTS) BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISEThis work-based course will develop the knowledge and skills you need for a career in
business or enterprise development. Designed with input from regional and local
employers and expert staff, and drawing on your previous and current work experience,
the course has been designed to develop your understanding of business and
innovation principles.
Taught at Oxford and Cherwell Valley College, at its Oxford campus, this foundation
degree has been designed to prepare you to operate in the world of business, while
developing an understanding of the nature of enterprise and its fit within a range of
business environments. In addition, subject to validation, this course will also be taught
at the Reading Campus.
� The Business strand of the course seeks to equip you with an understanding
of the scope and functions of business, as well as an appreciation of the internal
and external environments in which businesses operate.
� The Enterprise strand explores the concepts and theories of enterprise and
entrepreneurship, while examining organisational behaviour, the nature of creativity
and the concepts of management and decision making.
Alongside these practice-based strands, the course also develops your professional,
academic and research skills.
� In your first year, you will be introduced to areas such as critical thinking and
academic writing.
� In the second year, you will focus on research skills and developing skills of
enquiry in preparation for your business project (which will be focused on your
workplace).
This will also help prepare you for your honours component modules (eg synoptic
module or dissertation), should you decide to progress on to the final year of the
BA (Hons) Business and Management course, delivered at Oxford Brookes University.
To join this course, you need to be working in an appropriate current role. Your
work-place provides the work-based element of the course.
This foundation degree provides you with the skills you need to pursue a career
