ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Last week of Term 2! Wow, where did the term
go? We hope everyone has a happy and safe
holiday. Roads are busy over the Easter break, be
careful and we look forward to seeing you happy
and well on Monday April 16th.
Portfolios This week students have brought home a
portfolio with samples and assessments of some
of their work this term. Please read the
explanation that is in each portfolio and we would
appreciate you writing a comment about the
portfolio on the small slip of paper that is at the
end of the work. This needs to be returned with
the portfolio tomorrow, before the holidays
start. We are sorry if you have had only one or
two nights to look at your child’s work and we will
endeavour to get them home earlier next term.
We hope this is another step towards
communicating with our school community about
what we do at Clayton South.

A HUGE THANKYOU!!!
We would like to say a special thank you to the
Hoac family for their continued support at
Clayton South PS. Angela Hoac’s brother Thai Do
has generously donated computers from his
workplace at Fujitsu for use in our school. The
Preps and Grade 3/4’s will welcome newer and
faster classroom computers and our technician
will be busy in the coming weeks setting these up.
We would also like to thank our fantastic,
hardworking PFA who have done a fabulous job
this week with a special hamburger lunch as well
as preparing baskets for our Easter Raffle today.
We were fortunate to have a number of Easter
eggs donated from the Sisters at St Peter’s
Church in Clayton for our raffle as well as bread
being donated from Delbake in Oakleigh for our
hamburgers.
We would like to thank everyone for their
continued support at Clayton South.
Visitor in Grade 3/4. Recently students in Grades 3 and 4 were lucky
enough to have a special visit from Kyle Vander
Kuyp. Kyle is a two time Olympian and Australia’s
fastest sprint hurdler in history.
UNDER THE GAZEBO
He now has a variety of roles working as a
mentor to other athletes with Jump Start to
London 2012, a member of the Australian Sports
Commission board and an Indigenous
Ambassador. Nyssa Wescombe one of our pre-
service teachers organized the visit and I am
sure the students have appreciated her efforts
this term. Well done.
Head lice
I understand how frustrating it is for parents
who continually have to treat their children for
headlice. We need to all work towards
eradicating these creatures and the only way we
can do this is by all checking our children’s hair
this holiday and ensuring if there are any live
lice that we apply treatment. KP40 is the most
effective of the products available from the
chemist.
If you are unsure if your child has lice the best
way to check is to spread conditioner on your
child’s hair, quite thickly, and then use a nit
comb to comb the hair. This not only removes
live lice but also removes the eggs. Sometimes
parents may not be aware that the conditioning
and combing needs to be done every couple of
days to ensure all eggs are removed or else the
cycle starts again.
If your child has live lice the KP40 needs to be
reapplied after 2 weeks as well as doing the
conditioning treatment and combing.
If everyone checks at the start of the holidays,
in the middle and at the end we should be able
to rid our school of the problem.
School Photos If anyone is having a problem ordering their
child’s school photos can you see me on Friday so
we can see if we can sort it out before the
holidays.

On Friday the 23/3/2012 Kyle Vander Kuyp came to our school because the 3/4s are working on indigenous people. He told us how the past was and how he lived. He lived healthy to stay fit, and to run fast when he competes at the Olympic Games. He said to us that he doesn’t know all his cousins/relatives. He is one of many famous indigenous people. He said he was proud that he is indigenous. The best thing of all is that he gave most of the people his signature. When he was a hurdler he has to stay fit, he didn’t eat McDonalds, but when he had retired he said to his friend can you take a picture of my abs before we go to McDonalds in case I lose it. He attended specific training camps. He still has spears and boomerangs to catch food but he said he won’t throw a spear or a boomerang in Clayton. He didn’t tell us if he paints. By: Jim 3/4B.
Kyle Vander Kuyp’s visit On Friday the 23rd of March 2012, an aboriginal athlete called Kyle Vander Kuyp came to see the 3/4s to talk about being an aboriginal and also being an Olympic athlete. We asked lots of questions and we all got his autograph. The Tribes he was from was Woroni North Coast (NSW) and Yuni – South Coast. I learnt that aboriginals had a powder called ochre. They mixed it with water then that was their paint. They could put their paint in their mouth then they put their hand on the stones, then they spat out the ochre and that’s how they got their hand print. They did not use paint we use now. The paint we use now we can’t put in our mouth. It was interesting listening to Kyle.

On the excursion to Birrarung
Marr, we went to Federation Square
to look at indigenous art. I thought
that was fantastic. We went to the
old aboriginal playground and it
was better than I expected. We saw
the Rainbow Serpent, the rock
carvings, the spears and shields, the
aboriginal flag and the billabongs
in the Queen Victoria gardens. The
part I liked best was everything!!!

BIRRARUNG MARR
This is a rock carving of a dreamtime bird. It
feels like the magnificent bird is real because it
is flying and it looks like it’s going to come out
of the rock! I think it’s an eagle because it has a
big tail, large wings and a sharp beak. I enjoyed
the excursion seeing all the beautiful rock
carvings. I went to Federation Square where I saw
all the aboriginal paintings. I liked the
aboriginal paintings because they did lots of
animals, weapons, plants and lots more. I was really happy to go on our excursion to Birrarung
Marr.

Birrarung Marr On the trip to Birrarung Marr we saw the
aboriginal flag. I enjoyed looking at the flag
because the colours mean things black means
the aboriginal people of Australia, yellow
means the sun and the giver of life and red
means the red earth and the red ochre. At
Federation Square we went to the art gallery
we saw aboriginal dot paintings that
aboriginal people have made over the years.
I enjoyed going to Birrarung Marr because I
learned a lot about the things that Aboriginals
do and I would love to go again. By Asli
Birrarung Marr
When we went to Birrarung Marr we saw a
campfire that Aboriginals used for
cooking food, they also kept warm from it.
We also saw some rock carvings and a
rainbow serpent. The rock carvings
inspired me because of how the aboriginals
made them and I also liked the patterns on
the rainbow serpent. We also went to see a
billabong there was mermaid statue and I
saw some beautiful plants.
I absolutely loved the excursion because I
learned some knowledge about aboriginal
life and I saw lots of statues, rock
carvings and at Federation Square I loved
all the Aboriginal artwork.

Big Green Schools Conference Last week the eco design team took part in the Big Green Schools Conference at Carrum Primary School. They
listened to both our local MP Mark Dreyfus and Young Environmentalist of the Year Arron Wood speak about
the future of our environment and what youth can do to address current issues. They also participated in hands-
on workshops and brainstorming sessions that proved to be very popular. Here are some comments from the
boys who attended:
On Friday I went to Carrum Primary School. We talked about ways to save the planet by using solar power. They
have lots of environmentally friendly ways at their school. They have wetlands (which Qiannan went to) with
yabbies, bugs and big dragonfly nymphs. I went to their garden farm. They have chickens with names like Disco
Joe and a goat called Cuddles. They also have an avery with amazing types of birds like a blue red necked Indian
parrot. Rory
On Friday I went to Carrum Primary School. We talked about the Big Green Festival. I did the art workshop and
made mosaics. It was a fun day and we brainstormed with the high school students about the environment and
how to make our school more eco-friendly. Tolga
The eco design team went to Carrum Primary School from 9am to 3pm. We did some brainstorming, activities to
help the environment and listened to people who were there to help us learn. Romulo
On Friday I went to Carrum Primary School.
We talked about being green, had morning tea and lunch.
The most fun thing I did was going to the wetlands and I found some bugs.

A big thank you to Kylie Jones-Wilson for driving the boys to and from the event
EARTH HOUR
This Saturday night (31st March) at
8.30pm is Earth Hour. At this time
people around the world are asked to
switch off their lights to send a
message to world leaders about climate
change. Students in years 5 and 6 have
been learning about how Earth Hour
started in Sydney five years ago and is
now a worldwide event. They have
also been discussing ways that they
could plan their own Earth Hour.
Here is a rap that Jiyad from 5/6B has
written:
JIYAD’S EARTH HOUR RAP!!!
This is Earth Hour Day when you close the lights
Don’t worry, don’t worry it won’t give you a fright
60 minutes that is no lie
Even ask the world leaders they will tell you why
This is the environment you should care
Well if you don’t it’s not fair
Well you should care, you know why?
After that the environment will die
People from all over the world
Paris, Bollywood even Hollywood
Tokyo, London even Madrid
At 8.30 it gets dark indeed
Open the candles and have fun
60 minutes then it’s done!
Yo! Yo!
