No more worries: CID student is ready for her future
s o u n d e f f e c t s
“We were worried for her future.” That’s how Karen Leebolt explained her feelings when she and her husband, Terry, found out their granddaughter, Celia, had a significant hearing loss. When Celia was two, she started in the nursery class at CID. Not long after, the Leebolts toured the school with executive director Robin Feder.
“We were both impressed,” Terry said. “We saw what they did and how they worked, and it opened our eyes to how specialized the teaching is and how much expertise they have teaching kids.” Karen noticed that the teachers were down on the floor at the children’s level.
It wasn’t long before they could see the progress Celia was making. When she started, she was barely speaking. Within a year, she was initiating conversations. They have been avid supporters of CID ever since.

The mission of CID is to teach children who are deaf and hard
of hearing to listen, talk, read and succeed. We partner with families and collaborate with
universities, educators and other professionals worldwide to help children communicate
to achieve their fullest potential.
Karen’s passion for CID extends beyond her own family to others who are dealing with a new diagnosis. “I can’t even imagine being in that situation and not being able to afford to give my child what she needs,” she said.
“One of the main reasons we support CID is because no one is turned away for financial reasons. Our giving helps make this possible.”
It’s CID’s focus on new technology and teaching innovations that most excites Terry, an engineer. “They are constantly improving on the past, adapting and delivering new technologies,” he said.
And this fall, they will watch Celia, now a confident, talkative five-year-old, start kindergarten

“A few years ago, I was concerned about her future success. Now there is nothing holding her back,” Karen said.

“I have seen the amazing things they do at CID. I know he would be proud that his gift helps so many
kids learn to communicate.”– Sally Coleman, niece of donor James Guth –
James Guth struggled with stuttering his entire life. When he was born in 1913, there were few resources to help him. Living with a speech disorder affected every day for James. He could not do basic things like talk on the telephone or order in restaurants. But what he did accomplish is profound.
James’ niece, Sally Coleman, shared his story. “He lived across the street from us. He did not marry or have kids. We had a big family, and his family and close friends meant everything to him,” she said. “We were his lifeline.”
“He was very frugal. He felt money had to be spent for a good reason. He saved as much as he could,” Sally said.
When James passed away 20 years ago, he left financial gifts to many nonprofit organizations including CID, where there is now an endowment in his name. His generosity will live on in perpetuity, helping children learn to speak for generations.
“It is wonderful that someone who had so many problems communicating made, and is still making, significant contributions to a school teaching kids to speak,” Sally said.
“We are so proud of him and the example he gave our family of living generously. He would be thrilled to see what his gift is doing. I have seen the amazing things they do at CID. I know he would be proud that his gift helps so many kids learn to communicate.”

Why we give
Bill Jordan attended CID from 1946 to 1956. Today, he is an enthusiastic supporter. Bill explained: “I give back to CID for what it did to develop me into a successful businessman and farmer. At CID, I learned to talk and read lips. I also learned how to live in a hearing society. I always wonder what I would be doing now if it weren’t for CID.”
“Today, I love being involved with CID. I attend reunions and events and I give annually. I believe in the Golden Rule and give back to CID because they did so much for me,” Bill said.
“I would love other alumni to donate as well since our lives are so much better because of our education there. We need to be there for current students so they can have the same education and opportunities as we did.”
