Alveri Alves Sant’Ana ([email protected])Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

Algebras with involution and bounded colength
Ana Cristina Vieira ([email protected])Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais
Resumo. In the last years several authors have been studying the behavior of a special characterassociated to algebras endowed with involution, called ∗-cocharacter. In this talk we exhibit thedecomposition of the ∗-cocharacter for some important algebras with involution and compute thenumber of irreducibles appearing in that decomposition to form the sequence of ∗-colengths. As aconsequence we classify the algebras with involution such that the sequence of ∗-colengths is boundedby three.

On the Graded Rings with Nil Neutral Component
Antonio Marcos Duarte de França ([email protected])Universidade de Brasília
Resumo. Let A be an associative algebra over a field F graded by a group G and e be the unit ofG. It is well known that if G is finite and Ae is a PI-algebra, then A is also a PI-algebra. We havestudied a specific case of this result and we have answered the following question: what can we sayabout A when Ae is nil/nilpotent, where A is an associative F-algebra (or ring) with a G-grading?In this sense, we have studied the class of G-graded rings whose neutral component is nil. We haveproved that, under suitable conditions, any G-graded (associative) ring with nil neutral componentis a nil ring. Among other results, from Nagata-Higman Theorem we have a important applicationof our results. Besides that, we have exhibited a considerable relation between graded rings andKöthe’s Problem.

Resumo. Let (d1, . . . , dn) be an n-tuple of positive integers and F a field. The corresponding algebraUT (d1, . . . , dn) of upper block triangular matrices is the subalgebra ofMm(F ), wherem = d1+· · ·+dn,consisting of the matrices

where Aij is a block of size di × dj. These algebras play an important role in the classification ofminimal varieties of a given exponent ([3]).
The gradings, by a finite abelian group, on upper block triangular matrix algebras algebras (overan algebraically closed field of characteristic zero) were classified in [4]. This classification is in termsof gradings where the elementary matrices are homogeneous, called elementary gradings, and finegradings on matrix algebras. In this talk we describe the (graded) isomorphism classes of thesealgebras. Moreover, we describe the graded identities for elementary gradings with commutativeneutral component. These are the main results of [1] and [2].

Resumo. The present talk is an overview of results concerning to the finite basis problem forassociative algebras. This problem was formulated by W. Specht in 1950 for associative algebrasover the field of rational numbers. Afterwards, it was considered for associative and non-associativealgebras over an arbitrary fields and at present time it is known as Specht problem. We concentrateour attention on joint results with A.N. Krasilnikov, in particular, on the finite basis problem forassociative algebras satisfying the identity xn = 0.

Finite groups admitting automorphisms with nilpotent central-izers
Jhone Caldeira ([email protected])Universidade Federal de Goiás
Resumo. Let A be a group which acts by automorphisms on a group G. We denote by CG(A)the centralizer of A in G (the fixed-point subgroup). Very often the structure of CG(A) has stronginfluence over the structure of G. In particular, some attention was given to the situation where aFrobenius group FH acts by automorphisms on a finite group G (recently prompted by Mazurov’sproblem 17.72 in the Kourovka Notebook). We present some examples about this phenomenon.
The path coalgebra as a right adjoint functor
John MacQuarrie ([email protected])Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais
Resumo. As Kostiantyn Iusenko (USP) will explain in his short course this week, a finite dimensionalalgebra A can be well understood via a finite directed graph (known as a quiver) by constructingan algebra from the quiver having A as a well-behaved quotient. Recently, Kostiantyn and I madethe relationship between algebras and quivers functorial, obtaining an informative adjunction. Thisrelationship passes to inverse limits, by considering "pseudocompact" quivers on one side and pseu-docompact algebras on the other. Working with Kostiantyn and Samuel Quirino (USP), a similaradjunction is obtained for abstract quivers and arbitrary coalgebras. This construction yields adifferent generalization to the pseudocompact case. I’ll explain all the main ideas involved.

Lie and Jordan algebras
Plamen Koshlukov ([email protected])Universidade Estadual de Campinas
Resumo. We describe the gradings by an arbitrary group, on the Lie and on the Jordan algebraof the upper triangular matrices of any order. In the Lie case one obtains a reasonably completedescription of the corresponding graded identities while in the Jordan case such a description seemsto be quite difficult.
It should be noted that in both the Lie and the Jordan cases, there appear some "strange"gradings. Let us recall that in the associative case it is known that every group grading is, up toisomorphism, elementary. Moreover, the graded identities of such gradings are also well known. Thusin the Lie and the Jordan cases there appear sharp differences from the associative one.

Algebras, quivers and adjoint fucntors
Kostiantyn Iusenko ([email protected])Universidade de São Paulo (IME-USP)
Resumo. The aim of this course is a primer with basic notions of category theory and representationtheory of finite dimensional algebras. We will study the concept of adjoint functors and show thatthe correspondence “quiver” “algebra” can be interpreted as a pair of adjoint functors betweencertain categories. Mostly the lectures do not contain the proofs and the theory is accompanied byexamples (sometimes introduced as the exercises).
