  • You do not have to be a world leader

or even a bil l ionaire to make an impact.

If we are going to turn things around,

we all need to do our part to make it happen.

    Change starts with you.

  • wa better world is within reach The United Nations Foundation is driven by the belief that a better world is within reach and that everyone has a role to play in helping the United Nations make this vision possible. We build public-private partnerships to address the worlds most pressing problems and broaden support for the United Nations through advocacy, public outreach, campaigns, and initiatives. The Foundation was created in 1998 as a U.S. public charity by entrepreneur and philanthropist Ted Turner and is joined in its work by

    corporations, governments, foundations, and individuals.

  • wour leadershipGlobal perspective is essential for global reach, connections, and change. The UN Foundations Board of Directors includes the most influential leaders of our time, whose pioneering work supports the UNs vision of a more peaceful, prosperous, and just world.

our relationship with the United Nations

We help tell the UNs story, build support for the UNs global programs, and advocate for a strong U.S.-UN relationship. We work closely with the UN Secretary-General, UN agencies, the UN Fund for International Partnerships, the UN Office of Partnerships, and other stakeholders to support the UNs work. This includes working together on UN global efforts such as Sustainable Energy for All to make energy more accessible, more efficient, and cleaner by 2030, and Every Woman Every Child to mobilize and intensify global action to improve womens and childrens health. Together with the Better World Campaign and the United Nations Association of the USA, we represent the single largest network of American supporters of the UN. We are proud to be part of a global community

partnering with the UN for progress and change.

  • The UN Foundation has invested $2 billion to date to mobilize global change. With support from individuals, corporations, governments, and foundations the UN Foundation is proud to continue to leverage Ted Turners historic $1 billion gift. So far, for every dollar donated by Mr. Turner, we have raised an additional $1.50.

  • girls, women & populationAddressing the needs and rights of women and girls is essential to alleviating poverty,

achieving social justice, stabilizing the worlds population, and accelerating progress on

global development goals. The UN Foundation believes that empowering women and

girls with educational and economic opportunities and securing their health and human

rights is one of the best investments we can make for families, communities, and the

world. We work with the UN, and NGO, corporate, and government partners to promote

gender equality; address the unmet need for quality reproductive health and voluntary

family planning services; advocate for increased resources and funding for programs

and activities benefiting adolescent girls; eliminate gender-based violence; and improve

maternal health care using integrated health systems and mobile technologies. When

progress is made in improving the rights of women and girls, our world thrives.

  • energy & climate changeEnergy is essential to economic development. It provides mobility, heat, and light, and

fuels the machinery that drives the global economy. But the worlds dependence on coal

and oil harms public health and the environment, contributing to air pollution and climate

change. We work with the UN and our partners to create building blocks for global action,

such as targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy and innovative financing tools

to support larger flows of private investment. Our goal is to move the world toward a safer,

cleaner, more equitable, and climate-friendly energy future a world where sustainable

energy powers a better future for everyone.

  • global healthWe work closely with the UN to develop and expand major health initiatives to help families

survive and thrive. Building on our success in creating the Measles & Rubella Initiative

with partners, we continue to create new coalitions and campaigns. Through our anchor

partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and public-private partnerships with

Rotary International, the American Red Cross, the United Methodist Church, and others,

we help deliver life-saving vaccines and anti-malaria nets to children, stimulate a market

for clean cookstoves that are safe and healthy for families and the environment, harness

the latest mobile technologies to improve public health, and address the major health

challenges facing the most vulnerable women and children around the world.

  • mobilizing global changeWe imagine a world where children dont suffer from preventable diseases like polio, malaria, and measles; a world where women dont die during childbirth; a world where girls go to school instead of being forced to marry as young as age 5; and a world where families everywhere have access to safe, sustainable energy. We are connecting resources, people, and ideas with

the UN to bring this future into focus and to mobilize global change.

  • stories of impactIts easy to be overwhelmed by the scope and scale of todays challenges, but as the stories on

these pages make clear, global progress is possible. Here are few highlights.

Polio Eradication: Success is Within ReachIn early 2012, the fight against polio reached a milestone India celebrated a full year without a single new case and was removed from the polio endemic list, leaving only three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria. With our partners, we have been dedicated to the fight, facilitating $200 million to help reduce polio worldwide by 99 percent.

Measles: 1 Billionth Vaccination Confirms Partnerships WorkIn 2011, the Measles & Rubella Initiative helped vaccinate the 1 billionth child against measles. Working since 2001 in more than 60 countries, the initiative has cut measles deaths by 85 per-cent in Africa and 74 percent worldwide. Before widespread vaccination, measles caused an estimated 2.6 million deaths each year.

Igniting Change: Global Alliance for Clean CookstovesThree billion people use polluting, inefficient stoves to cook, and the resulting toxic smoke kills almost 2 million people a year. Since its 2010 launch, the Alliance has secured an unprecedented $100 mil-lion in funding and recruited more than 270 part-ners across six continents to reach the goal of 100 million homes adopting clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.

  • Every Woman Every Child: Unprecedented Action for Global HealthLaunched in 2010 by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Every Woman Every Child mobilizes and intensifies global action to improve womens and childrens health. The UN Foundation has committed $400 million through cam-paigns and partnerships over five years to support this essential effort which aims to save 16 million women and children by 2015.

Sustainable Energy For All: Powering the Future Recognizing that sustainable development is impossible without sustainable energy, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is leading Sustainable Energy for All, calling on all sectors of society to make energy more accessible, more efficient, and cleaner by 2030. We are providing support to raise global awareness and engage stake-holders worldwide to create the future we want.

  • Universal Access Project: Strengthening Women, Families, and CommunitiesApproximately 222 million women around the world want but dont have access to family planning services. Since 2008, we have spearheaded a collaborative effort of leading foundations to strengthen the U.S. governments role in advancing repro-ductive health and rights globally by leveraging close to $12 million to support 25 NGOs.

Girl Up: Mobilizing Philanthro-teens Because changing the future starts with a girl, we created Girl Up a way for American girls to help girls in developing coun-tries. Since 2010, more than 230,000 Girl Up supporters have channeled their energy and compassion spreading the word through social media networks, contacting representatives in Washington, D.C., and donating money to UN programs that are making a difference for girls.

  • Shot@Life: A Voice for the Value of Vaccines Since its launch in September 2011, more than 100,000 people have joined Shot@Life to contribute financial support and engage in ad-vocacy activities to promote vaccines around the world. Together, we can save childrens lives by expanding access to vaccines. Every child deserves a shot at a healthy life.

Nothing But Nets: Protecting Refugees from Malaria With the help of our supporters, Nothing But Nets and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) have delivered more than 1 million life-saving bed nets to protect refugees from malaria. Even more importantly, were seeing incredible progress against this deadly, preventable dis-ease. Since 2008, malaria has dropped from the number one killer of refugees to the number five cause of death, thanks in part to our partnership with UNHCR.

leader in the fight against malaria, and in increasing economic

opportunities for women. To build on its success in the field, the

Foundation partnered with the Nothing But Nets campaign over the last several years - contributing to the distribution of more

than 6 million life-saving bed nets. In 2012-2013, the ExxonMobil

Foundation conducted an exciting new research collaboration

with the UN Foundation to identify the most effective program

interventions to promote economic opportunities for women

worldwide. ExxonMobil was honored at our 2011 Global Leadership

Dinner for its commitment to ending malaria deaths by 2015.

Mashable / 92Y Building on the success of the annual Social Good Summit started in 2010, the UN Foundation partnered with Mashable, the top online source for news in digital and social media, 92nd Street Y, and a unique group of influencial partners to host a similar dynamic discussion Rio+Social during the historic UN Conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20. CLEAN & CLEAR also offered mini-grants to Girl Up clubs across the U.S. for awareness and fundraising activities, funded scholarships for girls to attend the first Girl Up Leadership Summit, and helped launch a toolkit for teens to start a Girl Up club.

American Academy of Pediatrics As a founding partner of Shot@Life, the American Academy of Pediatrics is mobilizing pediatric leaders and its membership of 60,000 to provide technical health information to the campaign and to accelerate vaccine access goals. Through Shot@Life, pediatricians have the opportunity to talk to the public and the U.S. government about the critical role of vaccines in saving and improving the lives of children around the world. A pilot program, expanding from 30 offices, educates Americans about global vaccines at a critical momentwhile in the pediatricians office getting their childs recommended vaccines.
