For some kids, summer can mean more hungerThe federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was designed to provide nutritious meals during the summer to children that normally rely on free or reduced price meals during the school year. While SFSP helps many children, it misses far more who have barriers to accessing traditional summer meals sites. It also doesn’t provide food over the weekends, like many privately-funded programs operated by foodbanks and schools do during the rest of the year.Studies show that hungry children:• Are twice as likely to repeat a grade in school

• Have significantly lower reading and math scores• Are more likely to have behavioral problems, like

aggression, anxiety, depression, and loneliness• Experience increased absenteeism and tardiness and

lower levels of school engagement

Flexibility is keywhen schoolis outThe summer meals programs operated by

the Ohio Association of Foodbanks target

children in rural or underserved areas of Ohio

to ensure they don’t go hungry when school

meals aren’t available. We focus on getting

food to kids that need it, but aren’t served

adequately by existing federally-funded

programs. We are fortunate to have operated

the summer weekend meals program

since summer 2012 and the summer rural

delivery meals program and mobile farmers

market program since summer 2013. These

programs are more flexible than SFSP,

allowing kids to consume meals at home

when they don’t have transportation to get

to an SFSP site, when SFSP sites are closed

over the weekend, or when an SFSP site isn’t

available in their area.

Working together to make programs workbetter for Ohio's kids and families

All children who participate in the programs must complete applications to ensure eligibility and live in households with incomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level ($40,180 for a family of four). As part of the Ohio Association of Foodbanks role in managing the programs, we order all of the food, organize deliveries, track inventories, coordinate vendors, distribute weekly program newsletters,

and complete site visits at partner organizations to ensure program quality and compliance. We are grateful to the Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives and the Ohio

Department of Job and Family Services for not only the financial investment in these programs and the kids they serve, but also for their leadership on the issue of child hunger. Thank you to the Ohio

Department of Education for their partnership and commitment to all of Ohio’s children. Special thanks to the Freestore Foodbank for coordinating staff and volunteers to pack and deliver food boxes for the summer rural delivery meals program. And most of all, thank you to the community organizations and countless staff and volunteers that made sure these meals got to kids in need in their communities.
