Nik Kershaw was a member of a number of semi professionabands in the UK during the early 80s. When the last of thesebands split in 1982 Nik decided to embark on a successfulsolo career, with Nik quickly signing a major record deal in1983 and issuing his debut solo single the same year; I Won'Let the Sun Go Down On Me. This single was a hit althoughnot on its original release. In order to record her current album "Alma deSantiago" Jane Bunnett travelled to the city which isso full of joie de vivre and Caribbean flair. She wentto a studio in Santiago de Cuba where she met upwith native musicians for a joint project. That is howthe meeting with Los Jubilados came about, forexample, a group from Casa de la Trova of nine

musicians whose combined ages add up to almost600 years. This nonet was founded by the legendarysingers Mario Carcasses and Juan Gualberto"Bebeto" Ferrer. The two pensioners (= Jubilados)felt much too young to retire and in 1994 gatheredsenior musicians together (the eldest is 101 andexperienced the beginnings of son first-hand!). JaneBunnett invited these elderly gentlemen of the"Vieja Guardia", the old guard, to a studiorendezvous, as well as the comparatively youngrepresentatives of the Santiago Jazz SaxophoneQuartet.

The slave owners had a name for the Africans fromthe former kingdom of Ulkamo: they called them"LUCUMI". This word survived in Cuba as a term forYorub culture. This African religion has had a

considerable impact on Cuban musical traditions. Onthis album, Chucho Valdes, winner of severalGrammys and one of the best jazz pianists ever, hagone deep into "Lucumi" mythology. He dedicated"Ochun", for example, to the god of love and of therivers, the lord of gold, copper and coral. In "Mamboinfluenciado", on the other hand, he shows hisheritage as the undisputed son of Mambo.
