Challenge Program734.764.7616 | www.recsports.umich.edu/challenge

WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE PROGRAM?The Challenge Program at the University of Michigan is an activity-based program which uses a highly interactive and experiential approach to teambuilding and other aspects of organizational development. Since 1990 the Challenge Program has pro-vided hundreds of organizations with dramatic and dynamic learning opportunities. We use activities as the medium for helping a wide variety of groups and organi-zations explore issues such as team dynamics, communication, goal setting, trust, commitment. We help participants and groups learn about themselves and how they work together.

Programs are available any day of the week. Fees for programs vary.

MORE DETAILSWHAT WE OFFERA day at the Challenge Program consists of a carefully designed series of problem-solv-ing initiatives and group activities selected to meet the needs of your group. Activi-ties range from ‘simple’ ball tossing activities to more complex challenges involving larger and sometimes fanciful props. Some activities are physically challenging while others challenge the intellect; each one is chosen and sequenced specifically to assist your team in meeting its goals.

TRANSFER & APPLICATIONMost activities are followed by a “Debrief”: an essential opportunity to reflect on the teamwork process and articulate what the group members learned. Our professional facilitators help participants share their experiences and relate them to their work-place, group or team environment. This is an important step that includes reflection, evaluation, and goal review - all of which are critical for the learning process. This step helps the transference of positive experiences and helps minimize the return to old habits and behaviors.

Research has shown that experiential learning programs, alone or in conjunction with more traditional training programs, are a highly effective means of enhancing team development. Your Challenge Program will be custom-designed to meet the goals of your individual organization; however, the following overview describes in general terms what you can expect from our various program models.

8 www.recsports.umich.edu

Page 12: UM Rec Sports 2013-2014 Book

CUSTOM-DESIGNED PROGRAMSThe Challenge Program strives to deliver the highest quality learning experiences and outcomes possible. To achieve this, we will custom design your program to ad-dress the specific goals and needs of your group. We will also tailor your program to reflect situations or dynamics that relate to your team members’ daily tasks and re-sponsibilities. We are confident that your group will benefit from our engaging and personal approach to experiential programming!

COLLABORATIONS WITH HR/OD SPECIALISTSThe Challenge Program has designed many programs in collaboration with Human Resource and Organizational Development specialists. Whether working with an in-ternal professional or an external consultant we can: - Integrate corporate culture into the day. - Work with personality styles testing such as Myers-Briggs. - Provide opportunities to practice new behaviors in a safe setting. - Open the door to discussion of difficult topics. - Provide an exciting kickoff or finale to any intervention or program.

GOLF-BASED CHALLENGESOn or off the golf course we have golf-based challenges that provide a day of fun and teamwork for everyone – including those who have never golfed before! At our site, we can provide a golf-themed day, using our initiatives and low ropes elements. The whole day is designed as a competition which culminates in a team-based Blindfold Putting tournament. At a golf course we can arrange tournaments which combine experienced golfers with neophytes and challenge the foursomes on many levels: coaching and teaching, strategic planning, collaboration, mutual support.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROGRAMHALF-DAYA half day is enough time to start exploring group process or team issues. You can expect to meet the following objectives during a half day of teambuilding: - Help participants get to know one another differently than they might in the workplace/usual context. - Open up lines of communication. - Establish a sense of team camaraderie. - Create an atmosphere of mutual support in which cooperation, encourage-ment and interpersonal concerns are emphasized. - Gain a greater awareness of the importance of teamwork.

FULL-DAYA full day program allows you to reinforce the objectives that are achieved during a half day, and additionally serves to: - Develop clear and effective communication skills. - Anchor experiences and allows participants to draw useful parallels to the workplace. - Assess critical factors and more deeply explore ways teams can effectively work together.

Challenge Program734.764.7616 | www.recsports.umich.edu/challenge

for more information, please call 734-763-3084 9 www.recsports.umich.edu

Page 13: UM Rec Sports 2013-2014 Book

In addition, a full day allows time for individuals and groups to set future goals. Goal setting beyond the day assists participants in transferring what they have learned to the workplace.

These programs use problem-solving activities and cooperative challenges for exploration of posi-tive group dynamics. The half-day or full-day programs can accommodate up to 80 people per day.

ONE OR MORE DAYS/CUSTOM PROGRAMAny teambuilding program longer than one day increases a group’s ability to focus on and ana-lyze issues that are important to the team. Additional days allow you to focus on a broader range of problem-solving activities or include more traditional training segments that further enhance your group’s long-term goals. Research into teambuilding has shown that the blending of an adventure program with traditional training models is more effective than either method alone. The benefit of the additional day(s) is that the participants have more opportunities to: - Integrate traditional training within their adventure program. - Design specific strategies that transfer their experiences back to the workplace.

HIGH ROPES COURSEThe high ropes course provides participants with the opportunity to challenge themselves individu-ally. Adding a high ropes experience to your program allows group members to: - Explore individual and team risk-taking issues. - Enhance their understanding of how perceptions can limit achievement. - Increase their individual self confidence. - Practice techniques for individual and group support.

The high ropes course program can accommodate up to 24 people per day. Program lengths can vary according to your group’s needs and schedule, but typically require a full day (7-8 hours).

TEAM TOWER Adding our 40- foot climbing wall to your program will challenge any group’s ability to communi-cate, stay focused, and provide mutual support! The program provides a shared experience for de-briefing and learning and can accommodate up to 40 people per day.
