    Introduction

Note:The Ultrasonic Level Monitor is to be used only in the manner

    outlined in this instruction manual.

The ultrasonic level monitor combines sensor and electronics in asingle package. It is designed to measure liquid levels in open orclosed vessels. The process part (sensor) is Tefzel, allowing theUltrasonic Level Monitor to be used in a wide variety of industries, especially food and chemical.

The sensor houses the ultrasonic transducer and temperaturesensing element. The unit emits a series of ultrasonic pulses from thetransducer. Each pulse is reflected as an echo from the material andsensed by the transducer and is processed using Milltronics provenSonic Intelligence techniques. Filtering is applied to helpdiscriminate between the true echo from the material, and falseechoes from acoustical and electrical noises and agitator blades in

motion. The time for the pulse to travel to the material and back istemperature compensated and then converted into distance fordisplay, mA output.

    Installation

EnvironmentalThe monitor should be mounted in an area that is within thetemperature range specified and that is suitable to the housingrating and materials of construction. The front lid should beaccessible to allow programming, wiring and display viewing.

It is advisable to install the unit away from high voltage or currentruns, contactors and SCR control drives.

    Location

Locate the unit so that it will have aclear sound path perpendicular to

    the liquid surface

    Mounting

Note:Mount the monitor so that the face of the sensor is at least 25 cmabove the highest anticipated level.

    Threaded

The unit is available in three thread types: 2" NPT, 2" BSP or PF2.

Note:Before inserting the unit into its mounting hole, insure that thethreads are of the same type to avoid damage.

    Flange Adapter (optional)

The monitor can be fitted with the optional 75 mm (3") flangeadapter for mating to 3" ANSI, DIN 65PN10 and JIS 10K3B flanges.

    Intrinsically Safe Model

    FM / SAA(reference drawing 1-8600016Z-DX-A)

Under the entity evaluation concept, the Ultrasonic Level Monitorhas the following characteristics :

    Vmax = 30 V dc Imax = 200 mA dc

    Ci = 0 Li = 0

    Definition :

The Entity Concept allows interconnection of intrinsically safe apparatusto associated apparatus not specifically examined in such combination. The criteria for interconnection is that the voltage and current whichintrinsically safe apparatus can receive and remain intrinsically safe, considering faults, must be equal or greater than the voltage (Voc or Vt)

and current (Isc or It) levels which can be delivered by the associatedapparatus, considering faults and applicable factors. In addition, themaximum unprotected capacitance (Ci) and Inductance (Li) of theintrinsically safe apparatus, including interconnecting wiring, must beequal to or less than the capacitance and inductance which can besafely connected to associated apparatus.

    FM / SAA / CSA(reference drawing 1-8600016Z-DX-A)

Approved dust tight and water tight conduit seals are required forClass II, Div. 1, Gr. E, F, G, and outdoor NEMA 4X/ type 4 locations.

The maximum voltage of the non-intrinsically safe apparatus must

    not exceed 250 V rms.

Use only intrinsically safe barriers as listed.

    Operation

    Start Up

With the unit correctly installed (or aimed at a wall 0.25 to 5 m

    away), apply power.

The Ultrasonic Level Monitor starts up displaying the following:

It then defaults to the Run mode, which is the measurement readingof the distance from the transducer face to the material level in theunits indicated:

If the default display differs form that shown, refer to OperationStatus on page 10.

CalibrationThe calibration of the mA output may be done such that its span willbe either proportional or inversely proportional to the material level.

    proportional span inversely proportional span

    high level = 20mA high level = 4 mA

    low level = 4 mA low level = 20mA

Note:The 4 and 20 mA levels may be calibrated in any order.

    Calibration: Reference Method

With the vessel (or a target) at a distance corresponding to the

desired calibration value, press the respective "4" or "20" key. Aviewing sequence of the stored value is automatically initiated.During this time a calibration can be done by pressing the key asecond time. After viewing or calibrating, operation automaticallyreverts to the Run mode (6 sec).

The calibration value is referenced from the face of the monitors

    sensor, in the units displayed.

    Operation Status

The graphic portion of the display gives the user a visual indicationof the monitors operating status. Viewing the graphic can assist theuser in properly locating and installing the unit to achieve optimum

    performance.

    GOOD WAITING LOE / FAULT

The logo will change from full to partial to indicate operation status.

After the `Waiting' period, the `?' icon will appear for an `LOE /FAULT' indication. When a valid echo is again received, a `Good'indication will resume. Refer to Troubleshooting on page 17.

    Adjustments

There are several operating adjustments that can be made to theUltrasonic Level Monitor.

To access the operating adjustments, simultaneously press the "4"and "20" keys until the desired adjustment is obtained. A viewingsequence of the stored value is automatically initiated. During thistime the value can be changed by pressing either the "4" or "20"key. After viewing or changing, operation automatically reverts to theRun mode (6 sec).

    Calibration, Scrolling Method

The 4 and 20 mA calibration values can be selected wherereference levels, either from the material in the vessel or from atarget, cannot be provided. This method can also be used to trim theoutput levels obtained by the Reference Method (see page 9).

To change the stored calibration value, obtain the `c 4' or `c 20'display. The calibration value may be increased by pressing the "20"key or decreased by pressing the "4" key. When the display hasscrolled to the desired value, stop pressing the key. The displayautomatically reverts to the Run mode (6 sec).

    Blanking

Blanking is used to ignore the zone in front of the transducer wherefalse echoes are at a level that interfere with the processing of thetrue echo. It is measured outward from the sensor face. Theminimum recommended blanking value is 0.25 m (0.82 ft) but can

be increased in order to extend the blanking.

To change the stored blanking value, obtain the `bL' display. Theblanking value may be increased by pressing the "20" key or

subsequently decreased by pressing the "4" key. When the displayhas scrolled to the desired value, stop pressing the key. The displayautomatically returns to the Run mode (6 sec).

    Speed of Response

The speed of response adjustment allows the user to collectively seta number of operating parameters.

measurementresponse: is the limit to which the monitor will be able tokeep up with rates of change.

If measurement cannot keep up with the rate oflevel change, set the adjustment from `1' to `2'.If the monitor still cannot keep up with the rateof level change, set the adjustment option to `3'.Avoid choosing an option that is too fast foryour application.

    agitatordiscrimination:

discriminates between agitator blades inmotion, and the material (target) surface.

filter: discriminates between false echoes fromacoustical and electrical noise and the material(target) surface.

fail-safe timer: establishes the `Waiting' period from the time aloss of echo or operating fault condition startsuntil the fail-safe default is effected.
