ASSESSING RISK IN MAchINERy fOR GREATER SAfETyAchieve compliance by identifying and managing the hazards and risks associated with your machinery, with the help of the world’s most trusted name in safety – UL.

WELcOME TO ULUL is an independent safety science company with more than a century of expertise in standards development, testing and certification. As a well-respected third-party organization present in over 100 countries, UL has unprecedented expertise in product certification and safety compliance.

UL certifies, validates, tests, inspects, audits, and advises. We provide the knowledge and expertise to help customers navigate growing complexities across the supply chain – from compliance and regulatory issues to trade challenges and market access. Combining innovation in product safety with hands-on customer care, our services help manufacturers bring safety- compliant products to markets around the world.

UL GETS SAfETy cOMPLIANcE RIGhT fOR yOUR MAchINERyPinpointing the hazards and dangers in an industrial automation environment is important for protecting workers and business continuity –and increasingly, for achieving compliance. While some risks can be removed and others only minimized, most machinery risks can be better managed through a comprehensive on-site safety evaluation and risk management process. Now, facilities and engineering leaders can tap into the machinery safety expertise of UL.

UL’s Risk Assessment Program gives machinery manufacturers and users an experienced, trusted resource – including training, advisory, facilitation and gap analysis – for developing a risk assessment process that complies with the published standardized requirements.

cUSTOMIzEd ANd cONfIdENTIALUL’s Risk Assessment Program is tailored to your organization’s unique needs, workers and installation(s). Our team of field evaluators, trainers and engineers can support most installations in non-hazardous locations.

All engagements, findings and reports are treated with confidentiality.

With our Risk Assessment Program, UL can identify applicable UL Standards, OShA Safety Regulations, NfPA, ISO, IEc and other required machinery installation codes. Additionally, our service team will:

• Identify noncompliances and good practices.

• Facilitate your development of a risk assessment report that identifies hazards, quantifying these by probability and severity.

• Review the risk assessment report and provide a gap analysis to help ensure the methods used are in accordance with the applicable standards, such as ANSI B11 or ISO 12100.

SAfETy STANdARd IdENTIfIcATION & EvALUATION Starting your safety evaluation is straightforward. Qualified UL experts visit your facility and identify all applicable standards, codes and regulations, and evaluate your equipment accordingly. We provide you with a detailed written report that includes specific areas of potential hazards, noncompliance, as well as an optional Arc Flash Analysis. If UL has facilitated a risk assessment for you, the user-risk assessment will also be cited in this report. UL recommends that Safety Standard Identification & Evaluation be performed prior to the Code Authority inspections.

ON-SITE SAfETY EvALUATION – TEchNIcAL dETAILS You now have a report with documented evaluation findings from which you can develop a corrective action plan. Equipment and installation are evaluated to all applicable codes and standards, such as 29 CFR 1910 (Occupational Safety and Health Standards). The following are emphasized for electrical installations: • Subpart A (General Requirements)• Subpart I (Personal Protective Equipment -1910.137, Electrical Protective Devices)• Subpart J (General Environmental Controls - 1910.147, Lockout/Tagout)• Subpart R (Special Industries - i.e., 1910.269, Electric Power Generation, Transmission & Distribution)• Subpart S (Electrical)• Subpart O (Machine Guarding)• Applicable elements of all other Subparts (A – Z) will be included in the evaluation, excluding Subpart H (Hazardous Materials and Subpart Z (Toxic and Hazardous Substances)

ON-SITE SAfETY EvALUATION – ThE cOdES NfPA 70 – National Electrical code (NEc)Generally adopted throughout the US, as well as other countries, the NEC is the benchmark for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection to protect people and property from electrical hazards.

NfPA 70E – Standard for Electrical Safety in the WorkplaceNFPA 70E helps companies and employees protect personnel and avoid workplace injuries and fatalities by reducing exposure to major electrical hazards such as shock, electrocution, arc flash, and arc blast.

Arc flash Evaluation While it is preferable to service equipment while de-energized, sometimes service is required while energized. Arc flash studies provide a quantifiable assessment of the hazard level and determine the minimum level of personal protective equipment (PPE) workers nearby must then wear. Arc flash calculations assess the available arc fault exposure at panels and similar equipment locations, and determine:• Arc Flash Hazard Boundary• Correct Approach Distance• PPE Level

RISk ASSESSMENT GAP ANALySIS

In addition to the Safety Standard Identification and Evaluation, UL will advise and review risk assessments conducted by your team to help ensure methods are in accordance with published requirements.

Based on the findings in the risk assessment (RA), UL will deliver a GAP analysis report with detailed findings from the on-site evaluation and RA review, including pictures of hazardous areas. It is the user’s responsibility to determine corrective actions and reduce the probability of risk to meet the applicable standards

BENEfITSYou benefit from the assurance that the RA complies with published standards, providing you with the insight to determine corrective actions to reduce the probability of risk in accordance with necessary requirements.

RISk ASSESSMENT fAcILITATIONOur UL team helps create a risk assessment task force made up of users, integrators and/or safety leader(s). Once assembled, the task force undergoes a half-day on-site training, which includes the RA template (based on end product standard) and instructions on how to proceed with using the template (RA methodology).

UL provides guidance in preparing the documentation according to published requirements, while helping you with the responsibility of identifying hazardous situations, causes and effects, and then mitigating the probability of risk by implementing protective measures.

BENEfITSYou benefit by performing a comprehensive exercise for identifying hazards and reducing risk to tolerable levels, and all according to required industry standards.

TRAINING – UL BRINGS yOU UP TO SPEEdTraining is provided online, on-site or through a combination of both. UL can develop a training program to meet your needs based on the input you provide.

courses offered include but not limited to: • Applying Electrical Standards• Basic First Aid• Blood-borne Pathogens • Fire Extinguisher Safety• Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)• PPE Electrical Protective Devices • PPE Eye & Face Protection• PPE Hand & Arm Protection• Pre-Job Briefings for Electrical Work• Preventing and Addressing Electrical Violations• Recognizing Electrical Hazards• Using Electrical Safety Programs

BENEfITSWith tailored training that addresses your specific machinery issues, your employees are better able to understand and make use of the intent and application of OSHA Regulations, NFPA and other installation codes.
