ULI WASHINGTON 2014 ANNUAL REPORT
Message from the ChairULI Washington is one of the premier real estate organizations in the Washington, DC region because of participation from senior level executives to ambitious young leaders. There are events and committee meetings taking place almost every day of the year, and the learning and professional growth that takes place in these events is unparalleled. Here are a few things that distinguish ULI from other real estate organizations:
1. Thoughtful, detailed programming with useful take home value
2. Exploration of the most important issues impacting land use in the region
3. Relationship building and networking that crosses all disciplines, sectors and product types and bridges public and private sectors
In FY14 (July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014), ULI Washington continued its full range of programs and events while adding several initiatives to enhance its role as a powerful force in real estate in the region, including:
• A new strategic partnership with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) to provide focused Technical Assistance Panels in
regional Activity Centers designated in COG’s Place + Opportunity report. This enhances ULI Washington’s commitment to improving regional cooperation by identifying priority, catalytic strategies to maximize the impact of investments in Activity Centers.
• Involvement and support with an initiative of Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) to transform unused infrastructure into the 11th Street Bridge Park, a vibrant outdoor space spanning the Anacostia River, connecting two communities and providing a safe, healthy place to gather, exercise and learn.
• Creation of a Womens Leadership Initiative (WLI) to raise the visibility and number of women leaders in ULI and the real estate industry through programming and networking activities.
• A Transit Oriented Development Initiative Council was formed, with ULI Baltimore, to provide a forum for the exchange of information and sharing of best practices related to the creation of thriving transit-centric communities.
The district council is always looking for new member involvement. We hope you will join us.

Why ULI
Tatiana BendeckPROJECT ARCHITECTPERKINS EASTMAN
I am proud to be part of ULI because of how it has brought me together with a wide range of people to dialogue the global issues of the built environment and how we can collaborate to affect it locally. Through ULI’s mentorship program, I have been fortunate to be mentored by leaders in the industry to shape my professional growth as an architect. My engagement with different ULI committees has fostered working relationships that grow to be long lasting friendships, making ULI priceless!
Jay FisetteCHAIRARLINGTON COUNTY BOARD
I benefit from the creative thinking and networking opportunities provided by ULI. As a public sector person, I have found ULI members to be forward-thinking in their general philosophy and approach to land development—recognizing the importance of community-building, place-making and integrating land use and transportation. I appreciate that ULI is committed to action, and not just talk, and I have thoroughly enjoyed my involvement.
Yum Yu ChengPARTNER LINOWES AND BLOCHER LLP
I am proud to be part of ULI because of its powerful network of diverse real estate professionals whose day-to-day decisions and actions impact our communities locally and worldwide. As a member, you can tap into the collective knowledge, experiences, and resources of this network to enable you to make better decisions and develop innovative solutions to new challenges. The opportunities and exposure that ULI provides are tremendous.

Jeremy Hurlbutt, AICPPLANNING DIRECTORLA PLATA, MD
I am proud to be a member of the Urban Land Institute, because ULI unites people from every stage of the development process. The relationships that I have developed at ULI have helped me professionally and personally. The creation of these relationships helps create better development by bringing different perspectives to common issues and creating better solutions. ULI educates its members and the next generation of citizen and future developers through conferences, events, and programs like UrbanPlan. ULI has helped me fully understand the whole development world and given me new insight into how the built environment is created and the people who make it happen.
Shyam KannanMANAGING DIRECTOROFFICE OF PLANNING, METRO
I am proud to be part of ULI because it advances the very necessary dialogue surrounding the critical importance of placemaking in advancing a livable, sustainable, economically-vibrant future for myself, my family, and my country. ULI cultivates an esprit de corps among its membership and especially its many councils and I get the benefit of information-sharing, idea generation, joint problem-solving, and awareness building for the critical issues that face my region today—as well as the names, faces, and commitments from ULI members who are poised to tackle those challenges. Being a part of ULI has certainly helped me professionally, but more importantly it has given me a venue to allow my professional role to be seamlessly wired in to a community of practitioners advancing a broader shared vision for place-based solutions to society’s near-term challenges.
Jamison WeinbaumDEVELOPMENT MANAGERTHE JBG COMPANIES
The Urban Land Institute provides a tremendous opportunity to interact with the best and the brightest professionals working on topics related to the betterment of the built environment. I am continually impressed by the in-depth analysis of industry trends, and the thoughtful discussion of topics that are tantamount to being successful as a real estate investor and developer. I am proud to contribute to an organization that represents my values and priorities.
