Ulceby Parish Council Chairman’s Autumn Update 2018

As our thoughts turn to winter we can confirm that a new salt bin for the pavement opposite the Co-op Store has been ordered and we are ensuring that adequate supplies of salt are available for the other existing bins. Our Ward Councillors have been actively engaged with our local MP, Martin Vickers, and a group of village residents who are very concerned with the current situation regarding the use of the A1077 as the designated diversion route should the A180 experience a closure. Additionally, the volume of heavy goods traffic using this route as a short-cut is giving cause for much concern. The North Lincs Councillors and our MP are all involved in consultations regarding the suggested alternative diversion route and traffic census studies are taking place in an effort to assess the possibility of a weight limit through the village. In an emergency however, our local Police have the authority to lift any weight limit should they consider it necessary. At the recent NATs meeting, our designated Parish Councillor referred to the vandalism recently experienced at the village hall. Cllr Hannigan has received complaints regarding inconsiderate parking in Hallcroft/School Mews by parents taking their children to school and, failing efforts to improve this problem, NLC will conduct enforcement if cars continue to park incorrectly. We are advised that the visit of the The Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner, to which everyone is invited, will take place at the North Killingholme Village Hall at 7.30 pm on 10th December. This is a group village meeting of Thornton Curtis, Wootton, Ulceby and North Killingholme, when rural community policing and rural crime will be the topics for discussion.

Environmental health representatives have visited Killingholme Airfield to determine whether the waste deposited there was responsible for the infestation of flies experienced in our village during the summer. Whilst they found that the waste was not the source of the infestation, they are continuing to check local farms, etc., to further their investigations and in the meantime, NLC are actively seeking government funding for the complete disposal of this waste. New posts for the planter at the Skitter have been ordered and will be in place before the Spring and minor alterations to the Millennium Garden at West End are being considered in an attempt to make the displays there more visible. The work necessary to upgrade the path at West End is still awaited and North Lincs Council will be requested to ensure gaps are provided in the verges on Killingholme Road to allow better road water drainage. Repairs to roads throughout the village continue to cause difficulties and NLC have been made aware of these. A request will be made for the seats around the village to be repainted next year and, likewise, the War Memorial. All necessary arrangements have been made for the Remembrance Day Service to take place at the Memorial at 11.0 am on Sunday 11th November 2018 and it is hoped that St Nicholas Church will be available to continue the Service there afterwards. Mr Balderston has offered to make minor alterations to the wreath stands to ensure better support during windy weather. Dawn Macefield, Chair

Art Project Within the next few months we will be embarking upon an exciting art project, culminating in an Art Exhibition to celebrate the completion of the roof repair stage of the Renovation Programme. We are inviting local people to become involved in a variety of ways:- Local artists with experience of teaching others, to volunteer to deliver

workshops People interested in learning new skills or developing existing skills to

attend workshops and create a piece of artwork on the theme of St Nicholas Church.

People with existing skills to produce their own work outside of workshops to celebrate the building of St Nicholas Church, and submit it in the Art exhibition.

There are no restrictions to the type of art. It could be photography, ceramics, oil or watercolour painting, printing, stitching, knitting or mixed media. If you are interested in any aspect of the above, please email us at [email protected] Renovation Update The vast majority of the roof renovation work has now been completed with a slight delay encountered after the discovery of some roosting bats in one of the roof voids. An Ecologist attended site and confirmed the correct action had been taken to protect the bats and a certificate to allow work to continue was received from Natural England. The internal scaffolding is currently being removed and in the next few weeks the external scaffolding will be removed. A burglar alarm has been fitted to the roof and the inside of the building will require a team of volunteers to clean it, following all of the building works. Quotes are being obtained for the update of the heating and lighting and further fundraising is ongoing for this part of the project. It is anticipated that the church will reopen again for use by the end of this year (if it hasn’t already been opened before you receive this newsletter). Tesco Bags of Help Because of your support for this fundraising project through the Barton Tesco, we have been awarded £1000.00 to invest in our newly created Community Space and with this sum, we are currently sourcing the purchase of quality tables and chairs and we will keep you updated on progress.

ULCEBY FC It’s been a tough old start for Ulceby FC in Division Two of the Scunthorpe & District Sunday League who, at the time of writing, are still searching for their first competitive victory of the season. The latest result saw a 5-1 defeat away at current Division Three champions Burton Westlands – a game which Ulceby led 1-0 with just thirty minutes to play. But it’s been a similar story for the club who have been shipping too many goals, something manager Mark Chapman explains: “It’s been a very difficult start to the season that’s for sure. Having been around the Sunday League for the best part of 25 years, I’ve never seen teams of this level outside of Division One, it’s crazy. “You can usually count on a couple of good teams, but literally every game we’ve played so far I’ve been blown away by the sheer quality of them – I’ve not seen a bad player yet, I’m yet to even see an average player!” Ulceby opened up the campaign with a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Blyborough United before suffering a 5-2 defeat at home to AFC Berkeley. A welcome 2-0 friendly win over AFC Kirton Rangers was followed up with a 3-3 draw at home to Auld South Yorkshire, but they were soon back down to earth with a poor 4-0 home defeat in the cup to AFC Kirton Rangers before the latest defeat against Burton. “I’ll be honest, I thought the squad would have been good enough this season to do better than we are, but we’re literally being punished for every mistake and it’s something we have to put right.”, Chapman added. “We’re improving the squad all the time, we have to, in order to compete, so hopefully the results will begin to turn in the near future and we’ll start to climb the table. “In truth we should never have been put into Division Two after finishing bottom of Division Three last season. Division Three this season looks nothing special, apart from a couple of teams, and that’s really where we should be, but there’s not much we can do about it now. “We just have to keep going, keep working hard and making sure we improve - and we will. “I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Keith Dunn of www.all-freight.co.uk for providing our match balls for the season and of course JP Woodcrafts who have provided our wonderful kit.” All the best, Mark Chapman (Joint Manager).
