TurkeyLocomotive builders are constantly looking to expand into new markets, but new markets often mean working to new norms. Research is costly and mistakes can be fatal. Ideally one needs an experienced, specialised systems partner who can provide appropriate, reliable solutions.

Faiveley Transport engineers have regular meetings with car & locomotive builders: anticipating future needs is part of the job. So when Turkey decided to adopt new European norms, locomotives needed new braking systems. This was the ‘spark’ for the new ILS concept, the Integrated Locomotive Brake Control System.

This system controls all the brake functions using a deep modular approach, which allows unprecedented flexibility – just the applications needed for each use. This also saves weight, volume & the number of

interfaces. Installation is easier, too. No stand alone electronics also helps maintenance. Last and not least, the Smart modules with unique redundant capability ensure each mission is completed.

This super flexible, compact modular system also represents a step towards the ultimate target of global AAR/UIC standardisation.

ChinaIn the early 2000’s Alstom sold a double BoBo locomotive to the Chinese MOR (Ministry of Railways) influenced by its European Prima locomotive technology, with a transfer of technology to the Chinese locomotive manufacturer CNR DATONG. Faiveley Transport accompanied Alstom for this ToT, adapting its European brake and couplers technologies to the specific Chinese conditions.

This technology transfer required a total flexibility to follow the requirements of the Ministry of Railways, above and beyond what would be considered normal by many: with particular attention to local habits and expectations.Faiveley Transport’s adaptability brought this project to a satisfactory end and has extended to working directly with Chinese car builders, achieving
