India and Britain’s rich trading relationship will be in strong evidence at Auto Expo 16, with a raft of UK automotive companies exhibiting some of the latest and most innovative British-engineered components and systems.

The number of UK-built cars exported to Asia has more than tripled since 2009, making it the UK’s second-largest export region. The Indian market, in particular, has become increasingly important to the UK in recent years – for both vehicle manufacturers and the supply chain. In fact, the number of British-built cars exported to India has increased by more than 800% over the past five years, with 2,836 shipped to the country in 2014 alone, even despite high import duties. This growth has been driven by the huge level of investment committed to the UK automotive industry – more than £2.5 billion in 2015 alone - and it goes without saying that Indian companies are significant among these investors. Of extreme importance is strong collaboration between the UK industry and government, both having invested heavily to ensure the UK is world-leading in areas such as light weighting, efficiency and electrification – not to mention connectivity and vehicle autonomy, a field in which the UK is leading the way in on-road trials and demonstrations. As a car market, India really understands British brands, and demand for premium and luxury vehicles, a sector in which the UK has a rich heritage, is growing.

Significant investment in brands such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Jaguar Land Rover, McLaren and Rolls-Royce mean 60% of all UK-built models on offer are now from premium manufacturers.

What makes the relationship between our two countries work so well is that we have very similar ways of working. Both Indian and British engineers approach projects with creativity, ingenuity and innovation in mind. This is why a number of Indian companies base research centres in the UK, and why there are many UK manufacturers that have facilities in India – more than 15 in fact, including some of the world’s biggest brands: JCB, MIRA, Ricardo, Johnson Matthey and GKN. The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) exists to position the UK as a centre of excellence for low carbon propulsion development and production.
