The early history of Ujjain or Ujjaiyini is lostin the mists of antiquity. the Periplus of the Erythrean Sea, the widelyaccepted account of an unknown Greekmerchant who made a voyage to India in thesecond half of the 1st century CE. ThePeriplus talks of a city called Ozene (Ujjain)to the east of Barygaza (Broach) that wasnodal to the trade of onyx, porcelain,ordinary cottons and fine muslin. Ujjain wasthe capital of the renowned KingVikramaditya. The city witnessed the victoryof Vikramaditya over the invading Shaks,and the commencement of ‘VikramSamvatsar’, the lunar calendar, 2,061 yearsago. Today, the ‘Vikram Samvatsar’ is theoldest calendar in the Ujjain.

1 Kumbh Mela Ujjain

2 Shree MahakaleshwarTemple

Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple is set on aspacious courtyard and surrounded bymassive walls. It has five levels, one of whichis underground. Mahakal is of greatsignificance to Tantriks. There arearrangements for pilgrims to have darshanstanding in a queue, which begins at 3 amfor the morning aarti. The ambience in andaround the temple is quite clean and orderlyeven when crowded.
Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple is best visitedaround noon, when the crowds havethinned. TheKotitirth (the sacred equivalent of a crore -koti - tirths) is of special significance. Theimages of Ganesh, Parvati and Kartikeya areinstalled to the west, north and east of thesanctum. The image of Nandi is situated tothe south. The central roof of the sanctum isdecked with the sacred Rudrayantra madeof 100 kilos of silver. One of the rituals, theBhasma Aarti (4-6 am), involves smearingthe Shivaling with still-hot ashes from thecremation grounds in homage to Shiva asthe master of death, the dweller ofcremation grounds.
Mahakaleshwar Temple as a ShaktiPeethaThe temple ranks as the 9th ShaktiPeetha amongst the 51 other Shakti Peethasacross the Indian subcontinent. HereHarsiddhi Mata is worshipped as the mothergoddess. It is said that Sati’s upper lip or leftelbow had fallen here after her self-immolation, during Shiva’sTandav. The temple is often confused withthe Ujjaini Mahakali temple inSecunderabad.
3 The Vedha Shala Observatory
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, India
Built by Maharaja Jai Singh in the 1700s,The Ved Shala Observatory was known tohouse state-of-the-art instruments to studyastronomy. Among the highlights here arethe Samrata Yantra (used to calculate time),Nadi Walaya Yantra (used to calculate theposition of the sun and equinoctial days),Dignasha Yantra (used to calculate theposition of stars and planets) and BhittiYantra (for calculating the declination of thesun and distance of the zenith). 4 Harsiddhi Temple

About 8 km north-west of the railway stationis the Bade Ganeshji ka Mandir whichenshrines a huge, artistic sculpture ofGanapati, a panchamukhi (five-faced)Hanuman and the Navagrahas (nineplanetary deities).
