    a. Takeoff':

At engine time a message was reoei ved delaying the aero hour two hour• and take off time one hour. '!he extra hour wa.a to be spent circling the buncher. All aircraft except one de takeoff on ti eJ that one was airborne too late to mkke the formation.

  • Mission Summary Report (Cont'd)

    s. Squadron~ Group Aaaemblieat

Squadron and group asaemblies were good. Thirty-eibht aircraft (including three spares were tram S5lst) in the fonnation tbr.oug ~ o t the extra hour of circling at th buncher.

    c. Route .2!!!:_ England.•

'lhe Air CODDnander instructed the lead na tor point 1 on time or a minute early to insure 9oith " ' lead poaition. Route over England was as briefed. into ing column as briefed at point •D". Coast was late.

to make control its prop r di via ion oodcra.f't "B" came departed 1/2 minute

    "· Attack•

    a. Flight ~ Targeta

a Flight to target was as briefed and without incident until control p~int# s. At that point "Foxhole Able" (306th B. Gp) out short came abreast, and very nearly went through the 94th "A" formation. The 306th group bombed behind 94th "A and possibly interfered with oodcraft Baker" VHF control point mesaages as well as conversation between " oxhole "B" and Cowboy "A" indicated Foxhole "A" was behind his briefed position (Srd) at Control point#.)... Yet he leapfrogged the column and ended up abreaat of the division lead which would easily have created considerable difficulty.

    b. Bombing ~~

    ~ Squa.rona

eather was announced by uokeye as being 9/10 cloud cover over 1h e target. The Air conunander announced that r\Uls would be made in squadron formation in case of a chance for a ~aual assist. We headed in on the run just about 4 miles south of the briefed IP and mickey started his run. A good PFF run was made over 10/10'• clouds. The dropping angle was almost the same as pre-set. The sighting angle ~orrections were small. There was no chance of visual assist. The Leader aalvoed. All others uted a 60 foot intervalameter setting. The AFCE waa 0 I.

    ~ Squadrona

The low fe~l in trail at the IP and made an individual squadron {iclcey run, with the bombardier prepared to :make an aasist if possible. The cloud cover was 10/lO's all the way, ao the squadron d a straight PFF run. The first 3 rate checks were a little off so the bombardier made th necessary adjustments. The last two checked excellent. Bombt were salvoed by the lead an oropped with a 150 tt. intervalometer setting by all others. The AFCE worked satiafaotorily. Results were unobterved.

  • Mission Summary Report (Cont'd)

    4. b. Bombing Run (Cont 1 d)

    ~Squadron&

!he high squadron turned directly over the IP, in squadron formation in trail of the lead and low. It made ita own mickey run, but at all times it 1eemed to be directly b hind the aquadron in front. The mick y operator made just I course corrections while on the run. Rate angles all coincided very well and the tangent angles was nearly the same as what the bombardier preset. The cloud were 10/10'•• The bOiftbs wer• dropped through the sight salvo by the lead and dropped with a 50 ft. intervalometer letting by all others. Bambs went away just as the squadron hit the smoke marker of the squadron in front of us. Because the AFCE was "hunting" a little and the run was straight PFF, the run was de nually. Results were unobserved.

    c. Flight ~ Target:

Rally was good and return route as briefed. Letdown was made over the channel -- both coasts were reached on course.

    d. Return to Bases

Return to base was without incident. The letdown to 1500 feet made over the channel pel"Ll.i tted aircraft to return in contact weather. All ships landed safely at h e base.

    •• Weather:

Weather upon reaching continental coast was described at 9/10 to l0/10 1s (breaking approximately 7~0'• over Zuider Zee and then closing in again. Target was 9/10 to 10/lO'a covered, strata-cumulus clouds 8 - 12,000 feet tops, no contrails encountered. ·

    f. Fighter Supports

    Fighter upport was good.

    g. Comments on Formation:

Formation within squadron as consistently good. The lo squadron lagged considerably, however, between control points # 2 & :/1: 3 and possibly interfered with Woodcraft liB".

    h. Conclusions and Recommendations•

The 1or ening forces of B-l7's and Mosquitos seemed to b of benefit. Although the group suffered battle damage there could be seen many bursts as uch as 10,000 low. Recommend groups and wings make a greater effort to get exaot timing at Control point 1 and thereafter to maintain proper position. IT CAN BE DONE.
