On 25 and 26 March 2014,Ulster-Scots Academy (MAG) and theUlster Historical Foundation will hosta special conference at the EuropaHotel in Belfast which will explore therich links and myriad connectionsbetween Ireland, and moreparticularly Ulster, and Scotland.

With contributions from notable andaccomplished speakers from manydifferent disciplines, the conferencewill do much to increase our knowledgeof Ulster-Scots history and cultureand seek to demonstrate the positivecontribution that Ulster-Scots canmake to a shared inheritance.

This is an important event whichpromises to be challenging,thought-provoking and entertaining.

In addition to the lectures and presentations,exhibitors drawn from a broad range of sectors inUlster have been invited to participate. DR ANDREW HOLMESAndrew Holmes is a lecturer in Modern History atQueen’s University Belfast and graduate of QUB andthe University of St Andrews. He was a ResearchAssociate at the Academy for Irish Cultural Heritagesat the University of Ulster, where he also taught Irishhistory, and a Research Fellow at the Institute of IrishStudies at Queen’s. He is a committee member of theEcclesiastical History Society, and the Economic andSocial History Society of Ireland.

BILLY KAY‘As ithers see us’ - Billy Kaycelebrates the historiccultural links across theIrish Sea and looks at theties that bind and separateScotland and Ulster today.Billy was born in Galston,Ayrshire. He has won fiveinternational awards for his

programmes, which have been broadcast on BBCRadio 4, RTÉ Ireland, BBC Radio Ulster, ABC Australia,CBC Canada and Radio Netherlands World Service. In2006, Mainstream Publishing issued a new edition ofhis classic work Scots: The Mither Tongue while hislatest book The Scottish World was launched at theEdinburgh International Book Festival in August 2006.Growing up in the heart of the Burns country, Billy issteeped in the Burns tradition of poetry, song andlanguage – a definite advantage when it comes toreciting poems like ‘Tam o’ Shanter’ and talking aboutthe local, national and international connections in thebard’s work. Billy has also presented events based onBurns, Scottish culture and history at festivals such asCeltic Connections in Glasgow and the SmithsonianFolklife Festival in Washington DC.

A Scotland football fan, he is also convinced that itwas the Scots who taught the world to kick a ball. Hehas never been invited to give this talk in England!Billy Kay is passionate about Scotland and its people’sphenomenal influence around the world, and is able tocommunicate that passion with humour and love. DR LINDE LUNNEYLinde Lunney was born in Co. Antrim and went toEdinburgh University, and Queen's University Belfast.Her PhD research was on eighteenth-century Ulster lifeand language, and she has maintained an interest inthat time and place, and in identities and connections,throughout her career as a researcher and writer in theDictionary of Irish Biography, a project in the RoyalIrish Academy, Dublin.

AODÁN MAC PÓILINAodán Mac Póilin is the Director of the ULTACH Trust, across-community Irish language organisation, since itwas founded in 1990, and has been involved in anumber of Scottish-Irish cultural initiatives, such asColmcille / The Columba Initiative and Leabhar Mór naGaidhlig / The Great Book of Gaelic.

TIM MCGARRYTim McGarry is a formerlawyer turned actor, writer,stand-up comedian andbroadcaster. Best knownas Da from Give My HeadPeace, he was the taxidriver in Hearts and Mindsand is currently the chairof BBCNI’s popular panel

show The Blame Game. He wrote his own one manstand-up show Tim McGarry’s Irish History Lesson.In 2013 he wrote and presented a two-part programmeTim McGarry’s Ulster-Scots Journey.

DR WILLIAM ROULSTONWilliam Roulston is Research Director with the UlsterHistorical Foundation and has published a number oftitles including, Researching Scots-Irish Ancestors.

MOORE SINNERTONMoore is a documentary filmmaker specialising in thearts, history, politics and cultural identity.

MARK THOMPSONBorn and still living on the Ards Peninsula, Mark wasChair of the Ulster-Scots Agency from 2005-2009. Hisbackground is in the creative industries and he has awealth of experience in bringing Ulster-Scots heritageto the wider public.

CHRIS AGEEChris Agee was born in San Francisco and grew up inMassachusetts, New York and Rhode Island. Heattended Harvard University and since 1979 has livedin Ireland. He is the author of three books of poems, Inthe New Hampshire Woods (1992), First Light (2003)and Next to Nothing (2009) (shortlisted for the 2010Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry). He is theeditor of Irish Pages, a journal of contemporary writingbased in Belfast.

DR FRANK FERGUSONFrank Ferguson is Director of the Centre for Irish andScottish Studies at the University of Ulster and isProject Manager of the Ulster-Scots Education Project.

AONGHAS MACLEÒIDAonghas MacLeòid was born in Inverness.He spent his childhood between Inverness,Barra and Edinburgh before commencing postgraduatestudy at the University of Glasgow. He gained a first-class honours degree, and completed an MPhil on thework of the Barra writer Donald Sinclair. He is currentlyresearching a PhD, on the long poem in Scottish Gaelicin the twentieth century. He lives in Glasgow.

CONFERENCE SPEAKERSDR ROGER BLANEYFormer Head of Department of Community Medicine & MedicalStatistics at Queen’s Belfast, currently Co-Chairman of theULTACH Trust and a Director of the Ullans Academy, Roger Blaneyhas always been fascinated by and committed to the importantrole of language in Northern Ireland society. He is author of theground-breaking, Presbyterians and the Irish Language.

IAIN CARLISLEIain Carlisle is the Operations Manager of the Ulster-ScotsCommunity Network. He has acquired a comprehensiveknowledge of the Ulster-Scots community through closeinvolvement with a wide range of projects and events.

PROF. MARTIN DOWLINGMartin Dowling is a fiddle player and historian. Hewas educated at the University of Chicago and theUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison, and he performsand teaches Irish traditional music regularly inEurope and the United States. He was theTraditional Arts Officer of the Arts Council ofNorthern Ireland from 1998 to 2004 andsubsequently held postdoctoral researchfellowships in University College Dublin where heconducted research on traditional music, history,and identity. He is currently Lecturer in IrishTraditional Music at Queen’s University of Belfast.
