SERVICE Phi Kappa Psi Brothers Volunteer in St. Simons Island Beach Sweep

follow us on twitter @uga_ifc at facebook.com/ugaifc

Every October, thousands of students flock to St. Simons Island for a weekend of fun surrounded around the Georgia/Florida rivalry game. For many students, this weekend is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year. On the Friday before the game, students meet on the beach to rally and cheer on the Bulldogs before making the drive to Jacksonville on Saturday. Unfortunately, during the pre-game celebration, the beach gets littered with trash that is usually left by students for the residents of St. Simons to clean up. Ryan Casey, a freshman Phi Kappa Psi, lived on St. Simons until he was six years old, and still frequently visits his grandmother on the island. When Casey and his pledge brothers began organizing their Georgia/Florida trip, they came up with a great way give back to St. Simons, while still enjoying the Friday beach festivities. Casey had seen pictures of the mess left behind every year and decided to organize a group of students to help clean up the beach Saturday morning. After some research, Casey Contacted Lea King-Badyna who helps arrange an annual “Beach Sweep,” where local St. Simons residents join together to help clean up the beach after the pre-game revelry event. Casey wanted his fraternity to be a part of the solution, so he organized a group of his Phi Kappa Psi brothers to volunteer in the 2012 Beach Sweep. Jake Davis, Cody Hall, TJ Oakley, Ben Daniel, Josh Brito, and Casey all woke up Saturday morning at 7 AM to began helping with the clean up. Along with the other Beach Sweep volunteers, the brothers successfully cleaned the beach in less than three hours. Phi Kappa Psi was the first group of university students in Beach Sweep history to volunteer, and they plan on organizing a larger group of Greek students for next year’s event.

SERVICE Sigma Nu Chapter Raises Thousands for American Heart Association

follow us on twitter @uga_ifc at facebook.com/ugaifc

The Sigma Nu Gameball Run is held every year before the Georgia-Georgia Tech football game to help raise money for a selected charity. This year, the brothers chose the American Heart Association The Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry once again took the form of a fun and competitive philanthropic event between Sigma Nu’s Mu and Gamma Alpha Chapters. Nearly thirty runners from Mu Chapter met the Gamma Alpha Chapter at the Gwinett Courthouse in Lawrenceville, Georgia. Each Fraternity then took turns running the game ball for one or two miles at a time, led by police escort, until they finished the seventy-mile journey to Sanford Stadium in Athens. Each Sigma Nu chapter raised money through donations from individuals and small

businesses. The corporate sponsors names were placed on a banner that ran alongside each brother as they made the journey to Sanford. The Mu Chapter’s goal was to raise $10,000 for the American Heart Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to building healthier lives that are free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The donation will be made through Sigma Nu Fraternity’s Helping Hand partnership with the Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, which is given annually to the top NCAA head football coach. The Sigma Nu brothers plan on continuing the tradition during the 2013 football season in hopes of raising their donation goal, while promoting more awareness towards their selected cause.

GIVING BACK Interfraternity Council Hosts Annual Trunk or Treat

Fraternity men participate in annual Halloween community service event

Alpha Tau Omega brothers hand out Halloween candy to local Athens children

The enjoyment of the Fall season is something that resonates with most fraternity men. Whether it’s the anticipation of Georgia/Florida, memories of childhood costumes, or the changing weather, everyone has something to be excited about come October. Each year, fraternities and sororities come together around Halloween to dress up, socialize, and hand out candy to local Athens school children that may not otherwise be able to enjoy a safe trick-or-treating environment. The Trunk or Treat service project has gained a great deal of support over the last few years, with a large increase in participation across all Greek councils. With an increase in cooperation between Greek Life and the Boys and Girls Club, this year’s Trunk or Treat was able to make a large impact on the Athens community. Greek student attendance was high at this year’s event, where fraternity men passed out over a

hundred pounds of candy to the young trick-or-treaters. Representatives from many of the twenty-six IFC fraternities attended the event this year. Participants organized cars by fraternity and open their “trunks” giving kids a safe environment to enjoy the fun of Halloween. Held in the Varsity parking lot off of Milledge Avenue, the event is a great opportunity for fraternity men to give back to the community and reconnect with the childhood excitement of Halloween. Members of Alpha Gamma Rho, Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Chi Phi, Chi Psi, Delta Sigma Phi, Delta Tau Delta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Pi, Tau Epsilon Phi, Theta Chi, and Zeta Beta Tau were all represented at the the 2012 Trunk or Treat event.
