1 General Information

1.1 Introduction

This manual is the operation and maintance manual for the UFX7000A, UFX7900A,

UFX9000/A and J7000 series of Programmable Noise Generating Instruments. It

provides general information plus installation and operation instructions.

1.2 Description of the Basic Unit.

Noise Com, Inc. Series UFX7000A, UFX7900A, UFX9000/A and J7000 represent the

state of the art in Noise Generators. The Instrument can be controller manually by a touch

screen display or remotely via Ethernet, GPIB (IEEE 488) or RS232/RS422/RS423. The

instrument is controlled by a PC104 which provides for a very powerful and user friendly

instrument.

The instrument is 17.22 inches wide, 6.3 inches heigh and 19.5 inches deep. Rack

mounting brackets are optional, and can be fitted at the factory or later by the user.

The RF circuit, without options, is comprised of a noise source, a RF switch, and a

programmable attenuator. The remote interface for this unit with out any options is

Ethernet.

1.3 Options

Options avaliable on the Noise Generator Instruments include :-

GPIB (IEE 488)

Fine resolution attenuator, 0.1dB steps.

Input mains power 240V 50Hz.

Rack mounting brackets, to allow rack mounting into a 4U, 19” rack.

Switching the noise bandwidth by means of band limiting filters. These filters

can be internal or external to the instrument. The frequencies of interest are

specified by the customer. The maximum number of filters for a standard

instrument is 4. The box will be able to provide the full noise band width, the 4

filtered bands, and a terminated (RF off ) position.

Input connector and signal combiner. This allows an external signal to be

combined with the noise output. The noise output for this option is typically 6dB

lower than specified for a standard unit. A resistive combiner is used for low

frequency units (< 2GHz), and a Wilkinson combiner for the higher frequency

units (>2GHz).

A programmable attenuator can be added with the signal combiner option to give

the user amplitude control of the input signal. This attenuator can be 1dB or 0.1dB

steps.

Switched outputs. There is a SPDT RF switch at the output which allows the user

to switch between either of two outputs.

RS232 control option.

9 Keyboard PS-2 connector

10 Mouse PS-2 connector

11 Ethernet connection. This is standard on all UFX9937 Instruments.

Each instrument can be controlled via this port.

12 RF connectors used inconjunction with the external filter bank option.

Typically SMA or 3.5mm connectors are used due to size constraints.

13 Fan cover

14 Plug for AC input supply.

3.2 Initialization

Turn the instrument on, press the power switch on the Front bottom left cover of

the box (refer item 1 of Figure 1). The LED in the switch will iluminate.

After loading windows, the instrument will load the application software. This

will take a few moments, you will see the screen change a few times.

The instrument is now ready for manual control via the touch screen or remote

control. In this state after power on, the RF state of the box will be, all attenuators

will be set to the last stored attenuation setting, and the RF switch will be set to

off. GPIB and Ethernet address setup will be discusses later in the manual.

4 Operation

4.1 Operation of Noise Attenuator, and Noise ON/OFF.

Figure 3 shows the start up screen for the UFX9937. The instrument can be fully

controlled using the touch screen interface. Figure 3 shows the screen once the unit has

booted up. {Note: the attenuation maybe different. Under normal shutdown the system

saves the last attenuation setting, and uses this as the start up setting}. The ON/OFF

indicates the state of the noise source. ON = Noise source is on, OFF = Noise Source is

off.

The UFX9937 is a touch screen device. Touching the buttons will allow you to control

that parameter.

To turn the Noise ON/OFF, simply touch the button labeled OFF in Figure 3.

Touching this button will turn the Noise source ON/OFF.

Changing the attenuation can be done by

1. Touching the up/down arrow keys. This will change the attenuation by a

programmable step size.

2. Touching the Atten (dB) value (79.0 in Figure 3) will open a keypad display

(refer Figure 4). In this display you can directly set the value of the

attenuation. In this screen you can also set the Step Size. Figure 5 shows the

window that sets the Step Size.

5 Setting Remote Control Addresses and Parameters

5.1 TCP-IP Address

The UFX9937 is controlled fully via Ethernet. The SCIPI commands are given in the

back of this manual. First the IP address needs to be set/allocated.

First push the Comm button from Figure 3. This will then change the options down the

side of the screen. From the updated menu choose TCP-IP. This will then give Figure 6.

To change the IP Address, push on the window displaying the IP Address number in

Figure 6. This will then change the display to Figure 7. On the top left side of Figure 7

there is a button marked DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol). If this button is

GREEN, then DHCP is enabled, and the settings will be automatically selected from the

active DHCP server on the network. If this button is RED then DHCP is disabled, and the

settings will have to be set manually.

Once the IP Address is set, the UFX9937 should be soft shut down (using the Hibernate

button) and re-started.

5.2 GPIB

The UFX9000A is controlled fully via GPIB (Note GPIB is an option, U7opt16). The

SCIPI commands are given in the back of this manual. First the GPIB address needs to be

set.

First push the Comm button from Figure 3. This will then change the options down the

side of the screen. From the updated menu choose GPIB. This will then give Figure 8.

To change the GPIB Address, push on the window displaying the GPIB Address number

in Figure 8. This will then open a keypad window that will allow you to change the GPIB

address. EOS Char, is changed in the same manner. Time out is changed using the pull

down arrow beside the window.

To Enable/Disable the other GPIB specific options

Send EOI at End of Write

Terminate Read on EOS

Set EOI with EOS on Write

8-bit EOS Compare

Simply press on the Enable/Disable buttons shown in Figure 8 to change the setting.

6 Turning Off The Instrument The preferred method of turning the instrument off is to use the Hibernate button in

Figure 3. The Hibernate button is only accessible from this screen. Hibernate saves the

system settings, (e.g. Attenuation, ON/OFF) before the instrument shuts down. These

settings are restored when the instrument is started.

7 Software Up-Grades Software upgrades are avaliable on request. The upgrade is performed using the USB

port, and a flash drive. NOTE: Please read ALL the instructions before performing any

software installation on the instrument.

The following procedure is for installing the new UFX9000A software:

a. Power up the UFX9000A series instrument. When the user interface screen is

present on the instrument, insert the USB removable drive into the instruments

front panel USB socket.

b. Wait for the 'Noise/Com Software" Autorun dialog box to popup.

Note: We have observed that when using the USB removable drive for the first

time, the standard ‘plug-and-play’ messages appear in the lower right corner of

the display. This is normal. When the message reads ‘hardware is now ready...’ a

generic Autorun box appears. If this is your case, remove and reinsert the USB

removable drive from the instrument. The ‘Noise/Com Software’ Autorun dialog

should now appear.

c. Select "Upgrade Noise/Com UFX9000A Software using the program provided on

the device". Click "OK".

d. The "Noise/Com UFX9000A software upgrade version 1.12" dialog box should

appear. Click "OK".

e. The WinZip Self-Extraction dialog box will appear and automatically install the

new software.

f. This completes the software installation procedure.

g. Remove the USB removable drive from the UFX9000A instrument.

h. Cycle power. The user interface screen should now be present on the instrument.

The new software is now ready for use.
