UET Science Society

UET Science Society is the first ever central, non-technical and teaching society of UET Lahore

which encourages the students to bridge the gap between theoretical and practical

approaches. We at UET Science Society aim to spread awareness and knowledge regarding

Science and Technology among the students. We boast the most diverse assortment of

students belonging to different departments of UET.

About PSI Meet

PSI Meet was an effort by UET Science Society to gather the fanatics of science on one single

platform. A gathering where individuals may demonstrate their intellectual capabilities. We

here at UET Science Society aim to promote enthusiasm for the field of Science in students of

UET.

PSI Meet was an event geared towards engaging the students of UET in activities where there

scientific acumen was tested to the limits and their love for science uncovered. This event

served as an unparalleled platform in building certain skills in students like ingenuity and

creativity which will be critical in their professional as well as non-professional lives.

What is PSI-MEET?

PSI is a Greek alphabet, written as Ψ and is used frequently in the world of Science in numerous

equations, and to denote different physical quantities in different domains of science. It’s one

of the most commonly used Greek alphabet in the world of science and thus it indicates the

Science side of our society.

Adding “Meet” with PSI is to encourage a gathering of the people related to Science, and each

among us has a relationship with Science since the very young days.

Thus, the theme of the event is to bring together the students and elders alike with basic

knowledge of Science under the banner of UET Science Society, introduce them to each other,

let them share their interests, and have small competitions which shall invoke their knowledge

of Science as well as natural instincts.

Event Overview

Event was held on 22nd February, 2016 in Main Auditorium Complex at UET Lahore during

break hour as the first module of PSI Meet, mega event of UET Science Society.

A written quiz competition was held. The quiz was a fine blend of the questions related to

IQ, and the questions our big industrialists like to ask during job tests.

A total of 137 students were registered.

The top score of the test was 24 out of 40.

Winner: Muhammad Umar Bashir

Runner Up: Absar Naeem

What was Different?

The sole purpose of the quiz was to nudge students into thinking out of the box. Sometimes you

don’t need lengthy calculations and evaluations but to use your common sense to solve an

assigned problem. Students were asked some crazy, yet logical questions to answer within the

time limit. The reviews of the event were excellent. Overall, this event provided students with a

new way to ponder.

Event Overview

Science in 60 seconds was a sub module of PSI

Meet ‘16 conducted parallel to information desk

of UET Science Society, from 17th February, 2016

to 25th February, 2016 outside main library. This

module consisted of a number of games; each

game was allocated 60 seconds time limit within

which the participant were asked to achieve the

final goal. In these simple games, some basic

science principles were applied and being

engineering students, many participants won the

games by using their brilliant mind set. The

honorable Vice Chancellor also graced the event

and appreciated the effort. Participants who were

able to complete their chosen tasks in 60 seconds

were awarded with discount coupons for Chapata

Tandoors.

For the first two days, test runs were conducted

and participants were allowed to play games for

free. From the third day, they were charged with

20 rupees per game. Everyone showed

enthusiasm and performed exceptionally well in

all games.

3. Stir your mind with Science

The team of this module conducted the following games in a victorious way:

1. Control the cyclone

2. Balance the paper clips

3. Go the distance

4. Spoon frog

5. Ping-a-pong

6. Twisty turns

This event was entirely dedicated to bring in the fun element along with science. The module

held an exceptional balance between fun and science, accomplishing the goal. It was meant to

bring about the scienc-y entertainment in the daily routine of students. Thus, it was conducted

for an entire week along with information desk.

Selected games were simple, easy going, fun, and with a hint of science in them. The

participants loved playing them and competing with their friends. The overall response was

thrilling.

Event Overview

This competition was organized as part of the

Science Society’s Mega Event, PSI-MEET, and

was held in the Auditorium Basement between

11:20am and 12:50pm. Nearly 40 teams

participated in this competition. The competing

teams were tasked with constructing a Rube

Goldberg Machine (RGM) according to the

simple design that was provided to them, in the

designated one and a half hour time limit.

Almost all of the teams completed their RGMs

within the given time frame. The RGMs were

judged by UET Science Society’s staff advisor,

Mr. Talha Khan, and our dear guest Mr. Harris.

The honorable Vice Chancellor also graced the

event with his presence and witnessed some

outstanding RGMs at work.

Exploring a New Horizon

With this competition, UET Science Society was venturing through unchartered territory.

Initially, the greatest challenge for the managing team was to explain the very concept of an

Page 7: UET Science Society

RGM to students of UET. None of us could have foreseen the sheer number of teams that

participated and the remarkable performance that each of them exhibited. Each team

showcased their creative flair by giving their own unique twist to our simple design, opting to

use the materials we provided in the most bizarre ways imaginable e.g. one team constructed

their RGM using the wall as its support. Science Society’s latest experiment - Set it Up - turned

into one of its most phenomenal success stories. This competition serves as testimony to the

tremendous potential that rests within each and every student of UET and also highlighted the

need for such competitions that would awaken that hidden talent.

5. Tall of the Tallest

Event Overview

Another thrilling competition organized as part of the

UET Science Society’s Mega Event, PSI-MEET. It was

held in the Auditorium Basement under the

supervision of the Event Head, Rohan Akram. Nearly

20 teams participated in this competition. The

competing teams were asked to construct a tall

structure out of newspaper and card papers. Five

minutes were given for planning and 25 minutes were

for the execution. The height of the tallest structure as

measured by the event heads was 10’ 12” height.

A Glimpse of the Event

The competition compelled the students of UET to use

their mind and creativity in a very technical manner.

Each team utilized different concepts to construct

something out of newspaper. Teams with strong base

were successful in the long run.

Out of 20 teams, the structures of 8 teams were stable

for three minutes. Only those three teams were judged

for positions. At the end everybody was cherished to make something out of the newspaper

and there was a feeling of accomplishment everywhere.

Event Overview

This competition was organized as part of the

UET Science Society’s Mega Event, PSI-MEET,

and was held between 11:00am and 01:00 pm

on February 24, 2016. Nearly 65 teams

participated in this competition. The teams

were asked to solve a crime based on the

security footages, the depositions of the

suspects, the analysis of the actual crime scene

and the clues. The teams were judged on the

time they took to solve the puzzles and the

guessing of the murderer. The participants had to

visit the New Lecture Theatres, Student Service Centre, UET Stadium and the Auditorium while

following their clues.

An Improved Product

With this module, we attempted to add a

technical element to the usual mystery-based

competitions by adding science-based elements

e.g. the working principle of invisible ink. Also,

breaking the stereotypic barriers, we added an

actual crime scene to the event making the story

more authentic. The event was, as the business

majors would call it, an improved product in an

existing market. The event was a success since

the timings of the plot were well-managed and

the audience was given something fresh.

Event Overview

PSI-Meet was an event organized to give students a

chance to unlock the doors of their creativity

outside the boring classrooms and laboratories. Sci-

Tee was one of the most successful events that

helped to bring out the hidden talents of UET

students on the very platform of public

appreciation.

It was a module for the hidden artists and painters

of UET. The task was to design a T-shirt with basic

paints and brushes. Participants were allowed to paint any pattern, however the only constraint

was to create something that shows the relation between art and science. Their designs and

response were phenomenal. From DEFY THE GRAVITY to BHAI LOG, and much more. There

were designs which caught the eyes of our worthy VC Dr. Fazal Ahmad as well.

Sci-tee was organized in the School of Architecture. 50 teams were involved in this

competition, and out of all these artists, the winners and runner ups are as follows

Winners: Azka Javed and Ghania Ashraf

Runner Ups: Hafiza Maham and Aiman Muzzafar

rounds, firstly the participants were assigned to make letters of given alphabets, secondly they

performed the task of reaching a target digit using basic operations from given digits and lastly

they solved the anagrams. The instructions were clearly given before starting the rounds. All

the participants actively did all the tasks. The time limit put a check on them. The tasks were

judged by Saad Amjad, Muhammad Usman, Ahmad Usman Khan and team Countdown.

Event Perspective

The event was directly related to the intellectual capability of the students and the participants’

performance exposed their scholastic part. This event was very worthy as it enhances the ability

of quick thinking in the participants and familiarized them about how to tackle the various

scenarios. The event included such tasks which were according to students’ interests therefore

they performed a step ahead from their caliber. Those rounds polished the viscidity of students.

The event “Countdown” made a positive mark on the face of UET Science Society and the team

was succeeded in accomplishing its goals.
