Page 4: UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE · campaign (1-0 at home) and VfB Stuttgart in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (0-0 at home). • Benfica have met London opposition twice before

Match backgroundChelsea FC step up their pursuit of a sixth UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance in nine years when theywelcome SL Benfica to Stamford Bridge.

• The London club's 100% winning record at home in this season's competition will give them reason to believe, thoughJorge Jesus's Benfica should not be short on confidence either as they chase their first European Cup semi-final formore than 20 years – indeed they have already held Manchester United FC on English soil this term.

• A draw would not be enough for Benfica this time, however, after Salomon Kalou's goal gave Chelsea a 1-0 first-legwin in Lisbon on 27 March.

Match background• Chelsea have made Stamford Bridge something of a fortress on UEFA Champions League nights this term. Withtheir 4-1 comeback win against SSC Napoli in the last round, the London club have now recorded four straight victoriesand scored 14 goals with just one conceded.

• Including last season, Chelsea have suffered just one defeat, against Manchester United in the 2010/11 quarter-finals,in their last nine home fixtures in Europe.

• Benfica, for their part, have showed a stubborn streak on their European travels this season, winning two and drawingthree of their six games from the third qualifying round onwards. The only defeat came at FC Zenit St Petersburg inthe round of 16 first leg.

• Benfica have already got the better of one Premier League side in this campaign, having earned two draws withManchester United as they finished top of their group with the English champions down in third place.

• The 2-2 result that Benfica earned at Old Trafford in November was their first draw in England, where their recordaway to English opposition now reads W3 D1 L9. The Lisbon club also lost two European Champion Clubs' Cup finalson English soil, suffering Wembley defeats by AC Milan in 1963 and United in 1968.

• Benfica have appeared in 15 European Cup quarter-finals, winning eight and losing seven – including all threeagainst English sides. They also featured in the last-eight group stage in 1991/92.

• Benfica reached the final on the last two occasions they survived this hurdle – in 1990 and 1988.

• Two-time winners Benfica may have a greater European pedigree, but Chelsea have enjoyed more success in theUEFA Champions League in recent times – this is their eighth quarter-final appearance in the last 13 seasons, andthey have won five of the previous seven.

• Chelsea's history against Portuguese opposition comprises six matches against FC Porto in the past decade, withthree wins posted against the Dragons at Stamford Bridge.

• In their only previous knockout tie with a Portuguese club, a goal by Raul Meireles for Porto could not prevent hisfuture side's 3-2 aggregate success in the 2006/07 round of 16.

• Chelsea have won the tie on all seven occasions they have recorded a first-leg away victory in UEFA competition, most recently against FC København in last season's round of 16 (2-0 away, 0-0 home). They have won a first legaway 1-0 twice, against PFC CSKA Sofia in the second round of their victorious 1970/71 UEFA Cup Winners' Cupcampaign (1-0 at home) and VfB Stuttgart in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League round of 16 (0-0 at home).

• Benfica have met London opposition twice before in European Cup knockout ties and prevailed both times, againstTottenham Hotspur FC in the 1961/62 semi-finals and Arsenal FC in the 1991/92 second round.

• Worryingly for Benfica, only twice in UEFA Champions League history has a side recovered from losing the first legat home to win the tie, although both those clubs did lose the first leg 1-0: AFC Ajax against Panathinaikos FC in the1995/96 semi-finals (3-0 away) and FC Internazionale Milano against FC Bayern München in last season's round of16 (3-2 away).

• Benfica have lost the first leg at home in UEFA competition on just four occasions, and went on to an aggregatedefeat three times. Their sole 1-0 home first-leg defeat, however, preceded a 2-0 away victory at FC Dinamo Bucureştiin the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup first round.

• Benfica's last two-legged success against Premier League opposition came against Liverpool in the round of 16 ofthe 2005/06 UEFA Champions League, when they won 1-0 at home – through a Luisão goal – and 2-0 at Anfield.Overall, they have won three and lost five knockout ties with teams from England.

• Born in the Swiss city of Schaffhausen, Di Matteo started his career with the local club, scoring two goals in 50league appearances over three seasons before moving to Zürich in 1991. Won the Swiss league title with Aarau in1992/93, his sole season with the club, going on to a three-year spell at Lazio.

• Became Chelsea's record signing in 1996 and paid back a chunk of that €5.85m fee with goals in their 1997 FA Cup– after 42 seconds, then the fastest in the final's history – and 1998 English League Cup final victories. Scored theonly goal of another FA Cup final triumph in 1999/2000, the last final at the old Wembley.

• Having won 34 caps for Italy, Di Matteo sustained a triple leg fracture in a UEFA Cup tie against FC St Gallen earlyin the 2000/01 campaign and was forced to retire in February 2002. Then-manager Claudio Ranieri asked him to leadout the team for the 2002 FA Cup Final, which Chelsea lost to Arsenal FC.

• Took charge of MK Dons in July 2008 and, having finished third in the English third tier, was appointed by WestBrom the following summer. In his first season, led the club to second place in the Championship and promotion tothe Premier League but sacked in February 2011.

• That June Di Matteo returned to Chelsea as assistant manager to André Villas-Boas and, following the Portuguesecoach's dismissal on 4 March 2012, was appointed as interim first-team coach for the remainder of the season. • Initially a midfielder at Sporting, Jorge Jesus enjoyed a long if low-key career with a number of smaller Portuguesesides before moving into coaching with fourth division Amora after hanging up his boots in 1989, leading them to atitle.

• More success followed at Felgueiras, whom he led from the third division to the Liga in successive seasons, thoughthey were relegated in their third campaign under his command in 1995/96.

• Further Liga experience came at hometown side Estrela da Amadora, Setúbal and Guimarães, though he enduredanother relegation with Moirerense in 2005/06.

• Made a splash with Belenenses in 2006/07, leading them to fifth place in the Liga and the Portuguese Cup final, where a 1-0 defeat by Sporting allowed his side to compete in the UEFA Cup the following season.

• Even better followed at Braga in 2008/09 as he guided them to UEFA Intertoto Cup success and subsequently theUEFA Cup round of 16. Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?

• Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 28 occasions, including SL Benfica, APOEL FC, FCBayern München and Chelsea FC in this season's round of 16, although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of PanathinaikosFC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 roundof 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achievedby RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home.

• Twenty-one ties have been decided on away goals, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 19 ties have required extra time. Eight have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, three roundof 16 encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC.

• Eleven ties have gone to penalties, including the game between APOEL FC and Olympique Lyonnais in the 2011/12round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spotkicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Lyon on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw.
