• The Russian club looked set to open their latest UEFA Champions League campaign with a defeat as they fell twogoals behind at Viktoria Plzeň on matchday one, but a second-half fightback allowed Nikola Vlašić to snatch a pointwith a penalty in the final seconds. Madrid encountered no such worries, easing past last season's semi-finalistsRoma with a 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Previous meetings• The sides crossed paths for the only time in the 2011/12 round of 16, when they shared a 1-1 draw in Moscow.Madrid were comfortable 4-1 second-leg winners in Spain, Cristiano Ronaldo – who had also scored at CSKA –adding two more to his total, with Karim Benzema also on the scoresheet.

• Madrid went on to the semi-finals, where they lost on penalties to Bayern München.

Form guideCSKA Moskva• This is CSKA's 12th UEFA Champions League campaign, equalling the Russian record previously held alone bySpartak Moskva.

• In 2017/18 CSKA finished third behind Manchester United and Basel in their UEFA Champions League section, going on to beat Crvena zvezda and Lyon in the UEFA Europa League before losing to Arsenal in the quarter-finals(1-4 away, 2-2 home).

• The Russian club won four of their eight European home games in 2017/18 (D1 L3), although they lost two of threein the group stage.

• Excluding qualifying ties, CSKA have won only two of their last 11 European home fixtures (D4 L5).

• CSKA are, however, unbeaten at home to Spanish visitors, drawing three of their four fixtures – most recentlyagainst Madrid in 2012 – and winning the other.

Real Madrid• Madrid are holders and 13-time champions. Semi-finalists or better in each of the last eight seasons, this is RealMadrid's 49th European Cup campaign – more than any other side.

• Third in last season's Liga, the Spanish giants are in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the 23rd time – acompetition high they share with Barcelona and Porto.

• In 2017/18, Madrid finished second in their group – the second year running they had been runners-up in theirsection – but went on to beat Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern München in the knockout rounds beforeGareth Bale (2) and Karim Benzema scored in the 3-1 final victory against Liverpool in Kyiv.

• Madrid picked up six points away from home in last season's group stage, losing 3-1 at Tottenham but winning 3-1 atBorussia Dortmund and 6-0 at APOEL – the latter result their biggest away success in the UEFA Champions League.

• Madrid have lost three of their last 18 away European matches, winning 11.

• Julen Lopetegui's side lost 4-2 to Atlético Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Tallinn in August, denying them a thirdstraight triumph in the competition.

• Madrid have nevertheless lost only four of their last 34 European fixtures, winning 23 and drawing seven. Thosedraws include the 2016 final against Atlético Madrid, which Madrid won on penalties in Milan.

• The Merengues have lost on four of their ten trips to Russia (W2 D4) but are unbeaten in their last three visits, winning twice. Madrid are unbeaten in their six fixtures against Russian clubs, home and away (W4 D2).

Head coachViktor GoncharenkoDate of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarusian Playing career: RUOR Minsk, BATE BorisovCoaching career: BATE Borisov, Kuban Krasnodar, Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast, CSKA Moskva (assistant), Ufa, CSKAMoskva

• His career as a BATE defender ended at 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments, Goncharenko immediatelyswitched to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006before graduating to become assistant to head coach Igor Kriushenko.

• In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATEto five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November 2007,Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions; won the first of five successive league titles withBATE in 2008, and took them into the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2008/09, drawing twice withJuventus.

• BATE won a domestic double in 2010 and Goncharenko – who had lifted the 1999 and 2002 titles as a player – wasalso feted as his nation's coach of the year for three years in a row between 2008 and 2010.

• Twice reached the UEFA Europa League group stage, going on to the round of 32 in 2010/11. Added another leaguetitle in 2011 and took BATE into the UEFA Champions League group stage for second time, achieving another notabledraw against AC Milan. BATE returned to the group stage for the third time in five seasons in 2012/13, beating LOSCLille and eventual winners FC Bayern München.

• Won the 2012 Belarusian title but elected to take charge of Russian side Kuban in October 2013. Lasted a year atKuban and then six games with Ural in 2015. Won the Russian title as CSKA assistant coach under Leonid Slutskiand returned to the Moscow side as head coach in December 2016 after six months at Ufa, leading the Army Men tothe 2017/18 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals and a runners-up spot in the domestic league.

Julen LopeteguiDate of birth: 28 August 1966Nationality: SpanishPlaying career: Real Sociedad, Real Madrid Castilla, Las Palmas, Real Madrid, Logroñés, Barcelona, RayoVallecanoCoaching career: Rayo Vallecano, Real Madrid Castilla, Spain Under-19s, Spain Under-20s, Spain Under-21s,Porto, Spain, Real Madrid

• Lopetegui's promising goalkeeping performances for Real Sociedad's youth sides led to a move to Real Madrid. TheBasque native progressed into the senior squad, but, starved of opportunities, switched to Logroñes, where he made107 Spanish top-flight appearances over three seasons.

• Those displays earned a move to Barcelona but again he found playing time limited, prompting a transfer to RayoVallecano, where he featured 112 times until retirement in 2002. He earned one senior international cap and was partof Spain's 1994 FIFA World Cup squad.

• Started his coaching career in 2003/04, at second division Rayo, but was dismissed after ten games. After five yearsaway from the bench he returned to active duty in 2008/09 with Real Madrid Castilla, ending the third-tier campaign insixth place.
