Match backgroundReal Madrid CF are within sight of a third consecutive UEFA Champions League final as they welcome FC BayernMünchen for a second leg seeking to build on a 2-1 away victory.

• In Munich on 25 April, Bayern struck first through Joshua Kimmich, only for Marcelo to level shortly before half-time,Marco Asensio coming off the bench to tilt the tie in favour of the holders with the winner just before the hour.

• Only twice in UEFA Champions League history have a team overhauled a first-leg home defeat to win the tie, andBayern have painful memories of the more recent case having been beaten by FC Internazionale Milano in the2010/11 round of 16 (1-0 away, 2-3 home). That followed AFC Ajax's comeback against Panathinaikos FC in the1995/96 semi-finals (0-1 h, 3-0 a).

• This is the teams' 26th fixture – a record in UEFA club competition – and their seventh European Cup semi-final.

• The teams met in last season's quarter-finals and it was Madrid, en route to becoming the first team to retain thetrophy in the UEFA Champions League era and claiming a 12th European title overall, who came out on top. ZinédineZidane's side won, as now, 2-1 in Munich and then 4-2 in Madrid after extra time to progress to the last four.

• This is Madrid's record eighth successive UEFA Champions League semi-final, while Bayern are in the last four forthe sixth time in seven seasons.

Previous meetings• This is the clubs' fourth two-legged tie in seven seasons, Madrid winning two of those to Bayern's one. Overall, theteams have played in 11 previous knockout contests – all in the European Cup – Madrid winning six and Bayern five;the German club lead 4-2 in semi-final ties.

• Madrid have won their last six matches against Bayern, scoring 15 goals and conceding five.

• Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score in the first leg but still has seven goals in his last four appearances against Bayern– and nine in seven matches overall.

• In last season's quarter-finals, Bayern – then coached by Carlo Ancelotti, who had led Madrid to the 2013/14 UEFAChampions League title – struck first in the home first leg through Arturo Vidal (25), who then missed a goldenopportunity to double the advantage when he failed to convert a penalty in added time at the end of the first half.Ronaldo levelled two minutes into the second period and, after Bayern's Javi Martínez had been sent off for a secondbookable offence (61), secured victory with his second of the night 13 minutes from time.

• Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational atthe 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, wasdismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy, the last match of his career.

• Became assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season Madrid claimed their tenth European title. Took chargeof Real Madrid Castilla for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeeded Rafael Benítez as head coach, leadingthe club to yet another European Cup that May – the seventh to lift the trophy as player and coach. Added the UEFASuper Cup three months later, making him the fifth man to win that trophy in both guises, and finished 2016/17 bybecoming the first coach to win successive UEFA Champions Leagues, also guiding Madrid to a first Liga title in fiveyears.

• Moved to Spain, first with Athletic then led Tenerife to the 1996/97 UEFA Cup semi-finals, earning a season atMadrid, whom he led to glory in the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League but left that summer. Competition factsUEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know?• Teams have overturned a first-leg deficit to go through 42 times, including AS Roma in both this season's round of16 and quarter-finals. Only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FCInternazionale Milano's victory against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed aftera home first-leg loss.

• The biggest losing margin a side has overhauled was achieved by FC Barcelona against Paris Saint-Germain in the2016/17 last 16, when they lost 4-0 away but progressed thanks to a 6-1 home success. That eclipsed the previousrecord held by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals, when they went down 4-1 at AC Milan but won4-0 at home; Roma equalled that margin in this season's quarter-finals, turning round a 4-1 first-leg loss at Barcelonawith a 3-0 home success.

• Thirty ties have been decided on away goals, including 11 where the triumphant team lost the first leg.

• In all, 28 ties have required extra time. Twelve have been settled by extra time alone: five round of 16 encounters, five quarter-finals including Real Madrid CF-FC Bayern München in 2016/17, the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelseaand Liverpool FC, and the 2013/14 final.

• Sixteen ties have gone to penalties, including seven finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2016. The firsttwo-legged tie decided on spot kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 victory over Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005after a 2-2 aggregate draw, still the only quarter-final to go to penalties.

• The 2015/16 round of 16 tie between Club Atlético de Madrid and PSV was the first to finish goalless after two legs.Thirteen have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Real Madrid CF's defeat of Manchester City FC in the 2015/16semi-finals.

• Liverpool FC (versus FC Porto) and Bayern (versus Beşiktaş JK) both won 5-0 in the 2017/18 round of 16, equallingthe knockout phase record for the biggest first-leg lead – Real Madrid's 6-1 victory at FC Schalke 04 in 2013/14 andBayern's 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2008/09, both also in the round of 16.

• Bayern eventually beat Sporting 12-1 after a 7-1 stroll in the home second leg; that tie also featured more goals (13)over its two legs than any UEFA Champions League knockout tie.

• Bayern hold the record for the largest margin of victory in a UEFA Champions League knockout match havingbeaten both FC Basel 1893 (2011/12) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2014/15) 7-0 in the round of 16 second leg.

• The biggest winning margin in a semi-final game is Bayern's 4-0 defeat of Barcelona in the 2012/13 first leg andMadrid's 4-0 win at Bayern in the second leg a year later.
