Match backgroundWith both teams already through, Real Madrid must beat Borussia Dortmund on matchday six if they are to progressto the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League as Group F winners.

• Dortmund, who beat Legia Warszawa 8-4 last time out, hold a two-point advantage over Madrid going into their finalfixture of the group stage and need only a draw to cement first place.

• The clubs drew 2-2 in Germany on matchday two, André Schürrle hitting an 87th-minute equaliser to snatch a pointfor Dortmund.

Previous meetings• Madrid are unbeaten in five previous encounters with Dortmund in Spain.

• Prior to this season, the clubs last met in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Madrid prevailing 3-2on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy.

• Gareth Bale, Isco and Cristiano Ronaldo earned Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid a 3-0 first-leg lead before Dortmund, managed by Jürgen Klopp, fell just short of a fine comeback despite a 2-0 victory in Germany through two MarcoReus strikes.

• The line-ups for that first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu on 2 April 2014 were:Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Fábio Coentrão, Alonso, Modrić, Isco (Illarramendi 72), Ronaldo (Casemiro80), Bale, Benzema (Morata 75).Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek (Schieber 67), Papastathopoulos, Hummels, Durm, Kehl (Jojić 74), Nuri Şahin,Reus, Mkhitaryan (Hofmann 64), Grosskreutz, Aubameyang.

• The teams met in the group stage of the 2012/13 competition, when Dortmund finished above Madrid with the helpof a 2-1 home win – Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer scoring either side of Ronaldo – and a 2-2 draw inMadrid where Pepe and Reus featured on the scoresheet.

• The clubs were reunited in the semi-finals that season and Dortmund won the first leg 4-1 at home, Lewandowskigetting all four goals to send his side through despite a 2-0 reverse in Madrid where Karim Benzema and SergioRamos scored.

• Roman Weidenfeller is the solitary survivor of the sides' meetings in the 2002/03 second group stage, when Madridwon 2-1 at the Bernabéu and then drew 1-1 in Dortmund. Zinédine Zidane played in both matches too.

• Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc and youth-team coordinator Lars Ricken played in Dortmund's 1997/98UEFA Champions League semi-final loss to Madrid (0-2 a, 0-0 h).

Match backgroundMadrid• Including this season's victories over Sporting Clube de Portugal (2-1) and Legia (5-1), Madrid are on an eight-matchwinning streak at home in the UEFA Champions League.

• They have won 28 of their last 32 UEFA Champions League home fixtures, losing just once – 4-3 to German side FCSchalke 04 in 2014/15.

• That defeat by Schalke was Madrid's only reverse in their last 14 home games against German teams (W11, D2).Cristiano Ronaldo hit a hat-trick when they last hosted Bundesliga opposition, beating VfL Wolfsburg 3-0 in lastseason's round of 16 to overturn a 2-0 first-leg deficit.

• It is 50 years since Madrid first welcomed German visitors, overcoming TSV 1860 München 3-1 in a European Cupsecond-round tie in November 1966. Their overall home record against Bundesliga sides is W23 D4 L3.

Dortmund• Thomas Tuchel's men have already won twice on the road this season having overwhelmed Legia 6-0 on matchdayone – their record European away victory – then beaten Sporting 2-1.

• With 19 goals to their name, Dortmund need just one more to equal the record tally of 20 in a group stage campaign– a record jointly held by Manchester United FC (1998/99), FC Barcelona (2011/12) and Real Madrid (2013/14).

• Since the beginning of last term, Dortmund have won seven of their ten European away games played (W7 D1 L2).

• Dortmund have won just once in 12 previous visits to Spain (D4 L7). That solitary success was a 1-0 victory at ClubAtlético de Madrid in the 1996/97 group stage, courtesy of a Stefan Reuter goal.

Coach and player links• Zidane was in the Juventus team defeated 3-1 by Dortmund in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League final.

Head coachZinédine ZidaneDate of birth: 23 June 1972Nationality: FrenchPlaying career: AS Cannes, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Real Madrid CFCoaching career: Real Madrid CF

• Born in Marseille to Algerian immigrant parents, Zidane took his first steps towards footballing superstardom atCannes, transferring to Bordeaux in 1992. Blossomed into a French international, scoring twice on his debut againstthe Czech Republic in August 1994.

• Left Bordeaux after helping them reach the 1996 UEFA Cup final and joined Juventus, where he was a Serie Awinner and UEFA Champions League runner-up in each of his first two seasons. Lifted no further trophies, however,in his last three campaigns in Turin prior to a then world-record €78m switch to Madrid in 2001.

• Made up for a lack of club silverware by inspiring France to 1998 FIFA World Cup glory – scoring two headers in theSaint-Denis final against Brazil – and at UEFA EURO 2000, where he was player of the tournament; winner of theBallon d'Or in 1998, he was also voted FIFA World Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003.

• Made it third time lucky in the UEFA Champions League final by hitting a spectacular volleyed winner in Madrid's 2-1victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 showpiece at Hampden Park. Landed the UEFA Super Cup,European/South American Cup and Spanish Liga the following season.

• Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational atthe 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, wasdismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy – the last match of his career.

• Stayed at Madrid in an advisory role, becoming assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season the club claimedtheir tenth European title. Took charge of Real Madrid Castilla for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeededRafael Benítez as head coach, promptly leading the club to yet another European Cup that May – the seventh to liftthe trophy as player and coach. Added the UEFA Super Cup three months later, making him the fifth man to win thattrophy in both guises.

Thomas TuchelDate of birth: 29 August 1973Nationality: GermanPlaying career: FC Augsburg U19s, Stuttgarter Kickers, SSV Ulm 1846Coaching career: VfB Stuttgart (youth coach and U19s assistant coach), FC Augsburg (U19s, academy coordinatorand reserves), 1. FSV Mainz 05 (U19s and first-team head coach), Borussia Dortmund

• Tuchel had a fairly undistinguished playing career, retiring prematurely in 1998 due to injury.

• His first off-pitch role was with the Stuttgart youth team. He subsequently joined Augsburg, where he coached theU19s and reserve sides as well as serving as academy coordinator.

• Tuchel moved to Mainz in 2008 and was initially in charge of the U19s, whom he led to a German title. A year afterjoining the club, Tuchel succeeded Jørn Andersen as coach of the senior team. He went on to qualify twice for theUEFA Europa League, though Mainz were eliminated at the third qualifying round stage on both occasions.

• He took over from Jürgen Klopp in the Dortmund dugout prior to the 2015/16 campaign and led his side to the UEFAEuropa League quarter-finals, where they came up against Klopp's Liverpool team – and lost 5-4 on aggregate.

• Dortmund fared well under Tuchel in the Bundesliga in 2015/16, racking up 78 points to finish second behind BayernMünchen and qualify automatically for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League group stage. They were also beaten byBayern in the German Cup final in Tuchel's debut season.
