Starting Shape of both Teams: CHELSEA: 1-3-4-3 MAN CITY: 1-3-4-3 CHELSEA Attacking Shape and Style of Play? We see Moses and Alonso playing in wide areas as wing backs, Hazard and Pedro playing narrow with Costa as a front 3. At times Pedro and Hazard would play as central medfielders an leave Costa as the lone striker. Kante & Fabregas play centrally in the midfield who look to play centrally and switch from short passes to long passes behind Man City back line. Man City Attacking Shape and Style of Play? Man City shape varies from 1-3-4-3 to 1-3-2-2-3. Sane and Navas remain in wide areas in the Offensive 1/3 & De Bruyne would also come to play in the wide area to create 2v1 situations . Navas & De Bryune deliver crosses behind the back line from the right side, Man City first goal came from a Navas cross which translated to an own goal by Cahill. Aguero remained centrally and made it difficult to be marked in between the gaps of the back 3. Aguero movement would was dragging defenders out of position and creating spaces for pentrating passes and runs for Sane behind the back line . Chelsea’s Defending Shape and Style? Chelsea defensive block was low and shape would become 1-5-4-1in their half. Moses and Alonso would drop into the back 3 to become a back 5 and were marking the wide players. Hazard and Pedro drop with Kante and Fabregas to make a mid unit of 4, Costa remains high . When Man City had possesion in the Chelsea Half Costa would come in from the high position and press the ball carrier to disrupt the attack. The mid unit and back line were compact and made it difficult to make penetrating passes through the units. The Opposition’s Defending Shape and Style? Man City shape is a 1-5-4-1 when defending in their half. Sane and Navas occupying the width . De Bruyne and Silva drop into the the mid line with Fernandihno and Gundogan Auguero remains high. Shape of both Teams: CHELSEA 1-3-4-3 MAN CITY 1-3-4-2 CHELSEA’s Attacking Shape and Style of Play? Chelsea attack was mainly from their quick tranisition from Defending low in their half to Attacking with long quick forward passes. Chelsea took advatage of the high pressing Man City team which left lot’s of space behind their . 1st goal came from Fabregas seeing that Man City back line were high which left lots of space for Costa to get in behind. Fabregas sent a long ball beautifully placed to Costa who went 1v1 with Otamendi and was able to slot the ball into goal. 2nd & 3rd goal came from quick tranistion to attack from deep in their half to exploiting Man City unbalanced high defensive shpae with quick forward runs and passes. Man City Attacking Shape and Style of Play? Man City remained to playing 1-3-2-2-3 , Aguero Silva and Gundugan play very narrow and high on the back line. We find DeBruyne playing in wide areas again to create the overloads 2v1, 4v3 to get in behind the back line. Man City look to win the ball high in the offesive half and quickly exploit the spaces of an unablanced Chelsea defence. Several clear oppurtunities at goal produced from such efforts. Key Players for both Teams? Diego Coasta for Chelsea played an Instrumental part in the first 2 goals. His vision and quick reaction to identify when to exploit space for the counter attack resulted in the first 2 goals. Aguero pressure and game awareness caused several oppurtunities to take the lead early in the 2nd half. Chelsea Defending Shape and Style? When organized Chelsea played a 1-5-4-1 shape. But when Chelsea had possession and lost the ball , they were not well balanced defensively and left many gaps between units and players for Man City to exploit and lauch a quick dangerous attack. The back 3 left big gaps between for Man City exploit in behind. Man City’s Defending Shape and Style? Man City pressed high on the pitch and had a high defensive block, this left them vulnerable with lots of space behind the back line . 1st goal came from the back line not identifying that Fabgregas had no pressure and was going to play long ball , back line should have recognized this and dropped lower to close the space behind. Also with the high defesive block , it allowed for Chelsea to counter attack with lots of space behind the back line to exploit. Score at Full Time: CHELSEA : 3 MAN CITY :1

How Chelsea Defended: When defending an organized attack, Cheslea’s defending shape was 1-5-4-1. Moses & Alonso dropped into the back 3 o create a back line of 5 where they would mark Man City’s wing backs Sane & Navas in the wide areas. Silva & Hazrd would drop in to the mid unit with Kante & Fabregas as a mid unit of 4, Costa would play high and disturb any attempt by the back line of Man City to switch attack. Cheslea was defending deep in their half and were well organized and compact between the units, objective was to reamin behind the ball , discourage any penetrating runs and quckly tranistion to attack to launch a counter. Where Chelsea were weak was when they were in possession of the ball and had no defensive balance behind the ball if the ball was lost to Man City. This allowed for Man City, on winning possesion to quickly exploit Cheslea’s lack of balance and orgaization and create several oppurtunites to score.

How Chelsea Attacked: Chelsea played with a low defensive block and closed the gaps between the units and players. This low block encouraged Man City to play with many bodies high and leave lots of space behind the back line to exploit . 1st goal came from a wonderful long ball from Fabregas to Costa who took advantage of the space and had a 1v1 with Otamendi . Costa’s pace, technique and strength was no match for Otamendi and was able to have an attempt on goal and resluted with a goal. 2nd goal came from a quick transisiton to attack , Chelsea defended low in their half, won possesion and in 3 passes again were able to exploit the space behind an unbalanced back 3. Hazard quick swift pass to Costa who was able to receive and turn on Otamendi to feed the ball into space for Willian to make a run and attack goal to score the 2nd goal and take the lead. 3rd goal looked very similar to the 2nd, again we see Man City high in the half trying to get the equalizer and leaving themselves vulernable to a counter attack. Chelsea’s Alonso wins the ball deep in the half and with 1 long ball to Hazard who exploits the space behind an unbalanced Man City back line results in the 3rd goal .

Key Players? Diego Costa ability to take advantage and exploit the spaces behind the defenders with penetrating runs and passes, which resulted for 2 goals.
