any South African towns and cities had

offered NelsonMandela the Freedom of

the City, but Madiba chose Uitenhage as the

rienced the worst of apartheid re-

pression. But because of the stead-

fastness of its people it came out on

top.

What makes the Uitenhage com-

munity a shining star is that your re-

sistance always had a sense of direc-

tion.

What we see in Uitenhage is not

just an example of how people can

fight for freedomagainst all odds.We

also see how a town can turn its eyes

to the future, and use its freedom to

join hands across all sections of soci-

ety.

I thank you for allowing me to

join you as a citizen of this town. I

hope to emulate the heroism and

steadfastness of the residents of

Uitenhage and live up to their estab-

lished reputation.

Former Uitenhage Mayor and

Chairperson of the Uitenhage Tran-

sitionalLocalCouncil,DrSivaPillay

told the UD News that during 1994,

Uitenhage was a polarised society

with deep seated anger and frustra-

tion.

You must understand that the

first and one of the largest mass re-

movals of people took place here

from KwaLanga, which was a vibrant multi-

racial economichub.Then therewas theLan-

gamassacre,whichmade international head-

lines. Against this background, we had a pro-

tracted negotiation towards a Transitional

Local Council, a negotiation that was at a

stalemate without consensus.

The right wanted to close down VWSA -

as they felt it was the breeding ground for

communists. The left at that time also want-

ed to burnVWSAas they saw it as capital that

sidedwith apartheid to exploit the disenfran-

chised working class. VWSA was the heart-

beat of the town economically, and we had to

find peace.

Although many towns and cities had of-

fered Madiba the Freedom of the City, he

chose Uitenhage, in recognition of the enor-

mous steps it had made in reconciliation

putting the interest of the town first.

During this time with Dr Pillay as Mayor

of Uitenhage, VWSA stabilised and opened

its B Plant, Goodyear relocated to Uitenhage,

and two component factories opened their

doors in the towns industrial area.

We signed a Rand-for-Rand agreement

with Bhisho and built seven schools and an

additional two were completed later. We

transferred 9 400 houses to people, revamped

the Babs Madlakane Hall, widened Kamesh

Road, and secured funds for the KwaNobuhle

multipurpose sports centre.

Uitenhage was also the city that proposed

that we be a metropolitan municipality and

lobbied for Mandelas name.

In recognition of our strides, Madiba

agreed to accept the Freedom of the Town,

with Uitenhage being the first whose offer

was accepted by him.

As a town that offered him the Freedom

of the Town, we also bid him farewell, said

Dr Siva Pillay.

HILE the Eastern Cape is

getting ready for the arrival

of the remains of former

president Nelson Mandela

in Qunu on Saturday and a

state funeral as never seen before in this

country on Sunday, thousands of local

mourners will get the opportunity to bid the

SA icon farewell at amemorial service in the

Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday

from 09:00.

According to municipal spokesperson

Mthubanzi Mniki, the Eastern Cape Pre-

mier, Noxolo Kiviet and members of the leg-

islaturewill be attending thememorial serv-

ice.

Mniki said the clergy representing IDA-

MASA and the Council of Churches will be

handling the event expected to be attended

by the Executive mayor Cllr Benson Fihla,

Councillors, leaders from different political

parties in the province and traditional lead-

ers.

MEC for Social Development and Special

Programmes Pemmy Majodina, who is in

charge of the event, has urged members of

different denominations to wear their

church uniforms during the memorial serv-

ice. Zahara, who postponed her Phendula

Tour which was scheduled to take place at

the Boardwalk last Sunday, will get an op-

portunity to sing the song she performs with

the peoples poet, Mzwakhe Mbuli - dedicat-

ed to Madiba on Friday. Award-winning EC

Gospel sensation Lusanda Mcinga will also

take to the stage in honour ofMadiba, aswell

as other local gospel groups.

Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet said

in a statement over the weekend the per-

formance and conduct of government, as

well as the conduct of people of the Eastern

Cape during this period will have a signifi-

cant bearing on public opinion in the coun-

try and beyond, and all activities are there-

fore material to our provinces reputation.

Wemust honourMadibawith dignity and

pride. The official mourning period and the

State Funeral is an opportunity for all South

Africans and the international community

to mourn the loss we all feel and to cele-

brate Madibas extraordinary life and con-

tribution to all of humanity, said Kiviet.

The R30 million PeoplePavilion, a sports, rec-

reational, rehabilitation and community fa-

cility operating 18 hours a day for the benefit

of all Volkswagen South Africa employees

and their families, was officially opened last

Friday.

The opening was conducted by the Chair-

man of Volkswagen Group South Africa, Dr

Hubert Waltl, assisted by the Managing Di-

rector of Volkswagen Group South Africa,

David Powels and Chairman of Numsa Shop

Steward Council, Lazola Ndlazilwama.

Over the last few years, Volkswagen AG

has invested more than R6 billion in the

Volkswagen South Africa factory in Uitenha-

ge. This includes the opening of the most

modern and efficient press shop in the

Volkswagen Group in March 2013. Volkswa-

genSouthAfricanowhasaworld classmanu-

facturing facility.

Labour instability a concern

During his opening speech, Dr Waltl com-

mented: SouthAfrica is an important strate-

gic location for us even though it is relatively

small in terms of volume produced and deliv-

eries to customers.

The Volkswagen Group sees social part-

ners as key in achieving our short and long

term objectives. However the recent labour

instability is of concern to us. This cannot

and must not become a trend. Business, gov-

ernment and labour as well as key stakehold-

ers in SouthAfricamust work in a strong and

cooperative manner to create a stable envi-

ronment to ensure that lengthy disruptions to

production are avoided in the future. Compet-

itiveness, productivity and stability are key

to attracting investment, Dr. Waltl added.

The PeoplePavilion, which is the first of its

kind in the South African automotive indus-

try as well as within the Volkswagen Group

production network, forms part of Volkswa-

gen Group South Africas employee engage-

ment strategy. The strategy identified people

as an important pillar inmaking Volkswagen

a great organisation to work for.

South Africa, David Powels said The Peo-

plePavilion is not just a building but a plat-

form where all our people can engage with

each other in a different manner beyond the

hierarchical structures. This world-class fa-

cility in terms of structure and quality repre-

sentswhatVolkswagen stands for as a people-

oriented organisation.

Platform for people to engage

The facility has a gymwhich ismanaged by

a qualified Biokineticist and is open to all

Volkswagen employees to use for a nominal

membership fee. The gym is also used for the

rehabilitation of injuredVolkswagen employ-

ees and is equipped with purpose built gym

equipment. There is also a clubhouse with a

licensed bar and terrace which overlooks the

multi-purpose main field where in-house soc-

cer, rugby and cricket leagues are played.

The fully equipped multi-purpose hall is

used for indoor sports such as cricket and soc-

cer as well asmartial arts and volley ball. The

hall also serves as a meeting venue for em-

ployees andmanagement and can be hired by

employees for celebratory events suchaswed-

dings on weekends. Regular events such as

fun runs, talks on topical subjects and

evening functions which often include fami-

lies are held at the facility. Over 30 000 people

have visited the PeoplePavilion since June

2013.

Mandela a friend of Germany

Dr Waltl and Mr Powels also took the op-

portunity to express their deepest condolen-

ces on the passing on of the former President

of South Africa, Mr Nelson Mandela.

DrWaltl said: On behalf of our Chairman,

Dr Martin Winterkorn and the Board of

Volkswagen AG I would like to express our

sincere condolences on the passing of Nelson

Mandela. Amanwhose effect was felt around

the world and who played a key role in South

Africas development and helping the coun-

try to become what it is today.

Nelson Mandela was a friend of Germany

and of Europe. He was a man who showed us

true humility and dedicated his life to his

country.

Powels added: As a South African, I am

deeply saddened by the passing of the father

of our nation, a man who had more than a

dream and a man who made that dream a re-

ality. Because ofMadiba we and our children

are all better people, we live in a better coun-

try and we live in a better world. We were all

touched by the profound impact he had on

our lives. In his passing, we should reflect on

what we learnt from him and constantly im-

prove ourselves and the lives of others, in

Madibasmemory. It iswithheavyhearts that

we must take leave of this great man but I

know thatwewill never take leave of his great

Spirit. In remembering the father of this na-

tion, I thought that it was important that we

continue with this opening.

The big top tent is coming to Desaptch and

Uitenhage with McLaren Circus setting up

camp at Despatch from 13-16 December and

in Uitenhage from 18-21 December.

The circus was founded by David Dallas

McLaren in 2005 and has been built upon the

nostalgic memories of his childhood dream to

someday reintroduce the magical culture and

variety of a traditional big-top circus.

Today, McLaren Circus is the biggest trav-

elling circus in South Africa based on its size,

variety of acts and their selection of animals.

Some of the many performances on offer in-

clude Miss Nikita from Australia on her

heart-stopping single trapeze, To Yong

from the Chinese state circus displaying

spectacular balance on a unicycle, acrobats

from Kenya and Zimbabwe, an impressive

five man Chinese Poi act, rope acts, jug-

glers and the death-defying wheel of death.

No circus is complete without clowns

and the resident clowns Alick and Mariska

are sure to impress with their amazing

skills.

The animal performances will include a

mixed caged act with Americas Casey Mc-

Coy consisting of Rare White Lions, Afri-

can Lionesses, Bengal Tigers and a Rare

White Bengal Tiger.

Other animal acts include Perky Poodles,

Burmese Pythons, Arabian Camels, Minia-

ture Donkey and Goat, Miniature Horses

and Ponies.

According to Duncan McLaren, the ani-

mals at McLaren Circus are part of the fami-

ly and the circus maintains a high standard

of animal care, giving them love and care 24

hours a day and also consulting vets through-

out the country in order to maintain the high

standard.

Careful attention is given to the care of the

animals. They receive visits from welfare

inspectors and animal welfare organiza-

tions regularly and are trained by means of

positive reinforcement, patience and love.

Performances are at 15:00 and 19:00.

Oor die afgelope 31 jaar het n aansienlike

getal voorskoolse kleuters deur Kabouter-

land Speelsentrum op Uitenhage beweeg

waarvan vele hulle later in leiersposisies

presteer het.

Elsab Breitenbach, n gekwalifiseerde

kindertuin-onderwyseres wat by vyf verskil-

lende laerskole onderwys gegee het, het in

Januarie 1983 met Kabouterland Speelskool

begin. Na dekades van toegewyde onderrig

het sy besluit om vanjaar af te tree en gevolg-

lik di speelskool se deure te sluit.

Ek het aanvanklikmetmin kinders begin

wat mettertyd aangegroei het. My middelste

kind was een van my heel eerste leerlinge.

Vandag is sy self n onderwyseres en n ma

van twee kleuters wat beide ook deur my

hande is, het Breitenbach ges.

Baie van Kabouterland se kleuters was

later hoofleiers by plaaslike laer- sowel as

horskole. Oor die jare het ek hulle akade-

miese prestasies met groot belangstelling,

dankbaarheid en trots gevolg.

Volgens Breitenbach was dit vir haar oor

die 31 jaar duidelik hoe algemene dissipline

in ouerhuise afgeneem het en hoe die impak

van tegnologie kinders se verbeeldingsver-

mo laat afneem het.

Dissipline is vir my ononderhandelbaar.

Dit was my grootste verantwoordelikheid

teenoor n kind om dissipline toe te pas en

ek glo ook die rede vir die suksesse van my

speelskool.

Breitenbachvoer aandat daar indie onder-

wys indirek gekompeteerwordmet televisie.

Sy s dat kleuters se verbeeldingnie gestimu-

leer word deur oopmond na beeldmateriaal

te staar nie. Kleuters moet buite speel en n

verbeelding ontwikkel wat uiteindelik bydra

tot die konseptualiseringsvermo van n ont-

wikkelde volwassene.

Wat n groot voorreg was dit nie om met

soveel talentvolle kinders te konwerk en ook

te sien hoe hulle vorderend ontwikkel, el-

keen volgens die eie gawes en talente.

Aan al die ouers en kleuters wat aan my

sorg toevertrou is oor al die jare, s ek baie

dankie vir die voorreg om met julle te kon

werk ter voorbereiding vir toetrede tot die

groter skool. My grootste dank bring ek

egter aan my hemelse Vader vir die toerust-

ing, krag en genade ontvang vir die taak wat

ek in belang vankoninkrykskinders kon ver-

rig het.

van stapel met die doel om onvertelde verhale in verband met die maatskaplike, politieke,

besigheids-, sport-, kultuur- en opvoedkundige bedrywighede tussen die 1960s 1980s aan die

lig te bring. Di verhale is nie gedokumenteer nie, maar is in die geheue van sekere individue.

Die publiek word versoek om individue te nomineer wat in die volgende kategorie aktief was:

onderhoude sal op aanbeveling van die deskundiges met die gekose persone gevoer word.

Al die aangetekende materiaal sal in n onderwysinrigting bewaar word sodat die huidige en toekomstige geslagte

toegang daartoe kan kry.

Die voorlegging van name sal op Maandag, 25 November 2013 begin en die sluitingsdatum is Vrydag, 13

Desember 2013.

Probleme met die rioolstelsel in Bellstraat,

Kruisrivier, het eienaars van sakepersele in

di industrile area raadop weens gereelde

blokkasies en die oorstroom van riool en

afvalstowwe in industrile persele.

Ginkel Venter, eienaar van n staalkon-

struksie-maatskappy en persele in die Kruis-

rivier industrile area s die rioolstank en in-

frastruktuurprobleme veroorsaak dat besig-

hede hulle nie daar wil vestig nie.

Die rioolstelsel is twee jaar gelede opge-

gradeer en ons as sakemanne het toe al die

munisipaliteit in kennis gestel dat dit nie

voldoende is nie. Sowat 50% van die indus-

trile area is nog nie eers ontwikkel nie en

die rioolstelsel kan die huidige situasie nie

hanteer nie.

VolgensVenterwerk die pompstasie langs

die Swartkopsrivier ook nie effektief nie.

Wanneer afvalstowwe in die stelsel vryge-

laat word blok dit die pype, stoot op, loop oor

en vloei uiteindelik in die Swartkopsrivier

in.

My frustrasie is dat ons wat belasting-

betalers is op Uitenhage en n inkomste vir

dieNelsonMandelaMetropool genereer, nie

nmunisipale bestuurder op die dorp het nie

en ook nie mense het wat verantwoordelik-

heid aanvaar om saam met ons om n tafel

te sit en die probleme op n vreedsame

manier op te los nie.

Daar behoort wedersydse samewerking

te wees. Besighedemoet bymunisipale rels

en regulasies hou, maar die munisipaliteit

kom nie hulle verantwoordelikheid na ten

opsigte van infrastruktuur nie.

Die probleem word nie opgelos nie. n On-

afhanklike kontrakteurword ingeroep omge-

blokte dreine leeg te suig. Ek is seker dit kos

die belastingbetalers van Uitenhage n astro-

nomiese bedrag. Waarom word die geld nie

eerder aangewend om die infrastruktuur

voldoende op te gradeer nie?

Hoe kan ons verwag dat diemunisipaliteit

aan die mense van Uitenhage n diens lewer

as daar nie mense in bestuursposisies is wat

op die dorp is nie?

Ons het ons eie infrastruktuur wat in

stand gehou moet word. Hoe kan ons verwag

dat die dorp vooruit moet gaan as mense in

Port Elizabeth, wat geen belang in Uitenhage

het nie, die besluite neem?

As Uitenhage nog op sy eie was, met al die

industrie en belastinggeld wat ons betaal,

kon die dorp een van die florerendste dorpe

in die land gewees het.

The annual Springs Summer Music Festival

on the outskirts of Uitenhage this year fea-

tures the well-known and popular The Rock-

ets amongst the artists performing on stage.

The Rockets spend more than half of the

year performing outside of South Africa with

performances in Australia, Seychelles, the

Middle East and other African countries.

They have had numerous record successes

and received two SAMAnominations namely

Best Pop Performance and Best Contempo-

rary Dance Performance.

Other musicians to be on stage at the

Springs Summer Music Festival include Les

& Leanne, Chapter 3, DJ Superman and Greg

O Gee. The music festival will be held at the

resort on Monday, 16 December from 10:00 to

19:00. No alcohol will be allowed and the en-

trance fee is R200 per car with no more than

five people and R600 per taxi with no more

than 15 passengers. For more information
