GeneralDemands placed on plastic mould tooling areincreasing. Such conditions require mouldsteels that possess a unique combination oftoughness, corrosion resistance and the abilityto reach uniform hardness levels throughoutlarge cross sections. Uddeholm StavaxSupreme has proven to be the right choice forthese applications. Uddeholm Stavax Supremeis a new premium grade stainless tool steelwith the following properties:• good corrosion resistance• excellent through-hardening properties• good ductility and toughness• good wear resistance• excellent polishability

The combination of these properties pro-vides a steel with outstanding productionperformance. The practical benefits of goodcorrosion resistance in a plastic mould can besummarized as follows:

• Lower mould maintenance costs. The surface of cavity impressions retain theiroriginal finish over an extended service life.Moulds stored or operated in humid condi-tions require no special protection.

• Lower production costs.Since water-cooling channels are less like tobe affected by corrosion (unlike conventionalmould steels), heat transfer characteristics, and therefore cooling efficiency, are constantthroughout the mould life, ensuring consist-ent cycle times. These benefits, coupled with the high wear

resistance of Uddeholm Stavax Supreme, offerthe moulder low-maintenance, long-life mouldsfor the greatest overall tooling economy.

Note! Uddeholm Stavax Supreme is producedusing the Electro-Slag-Remelting (ESR) tech-nique. The result is a mould steel with a verylow inclusion level providing for excellentpolishability characteristics.

Composition Cr-Ni-Mo-V alloyed

Standardspecification AISI 420 modified

ApplicationsAlthough Uddeholm Stavax Supreme is recom-mended for all types of moulds, its specialproperties make it particularly suitable formoulds with the following demands:

• Corrosion/staining resistance, i.e. for mould-ing of corrosive materials, e.g. PVC, acetates, and for moulds subjected to humid working/storage conditions.

• High surface finish, i.e. for the production ofoptical parts, such as camera and sunglasseslenses, and for medical components, e.g.syringes, analysis vials etc..

• Toughness/ductility, i.e. for complex moulds

• Outstanding through-hardening characteris-tics i.e. high-hardenability, important forlarger moulds.

Quenching media and hardenability• Vacuum, cooling in gas with sufficient

overpressure

• Fluidized bed or salt bath at 350–500°C(660–930°F) then cool in air blast

• High speed gas/circulating atmosphere

In order to obtain optimum properties, thecooling rate should be as fast as possible whilemaintaining an acceptable level of distortion. When heating in a vacuum furnace, min.4–5 bar overpressure is recommended.

Note: Temper the tool as soon as its tempera-ture reaches 50–70°C (120–160°F).

When hardening larger dimensions ofW.-Nr. 1.2083 /AISI 420 type of material, therelatively poor hardenability will provide a lowhardness and an undesirable microstructureover the cross section. In some parts of themould the corrosion resistance and thetoughness will be lowered.

Uddeholm Stavax Supreme has a muchbetter hardenability than the W.-Nr. 1.2083/AISI 420 type of material so the high hardnesswill be retained even in the center of largedimensions. The very good hardenability willalso have a decisive effect on other propertiessuch as toughness and corrosion resistance.

HARDNESS AS A FUNCTION OFCOOLING RATE DURING HARDENING

Heat TreatmentSoft annealingProtect the steel and heat through to 740°C(1365°F). Then cool in the furnace at 15°C(30°F) per hour to 550°C (1020°F), then freelyin air.

Stress-relievingAfter rough machining the tool should beheated through to 650°C (1200°C), holdingtime 2 hours. Cool slowly to 500°C (930°F),then freely in air.

Dimensional changesThe dimensional changes during hardening andtempering vary depending on temperatures, type of equipment and cooling media usedduring heat treatment.

The size and geometry of the tool will alsoaffect distortion and dimensional change. Therefore the tool should always be manu-factured with enough machining allowance tocompensate for dimensional changes. Use

Tempering temperature

Note: Tempering at 250–300°C (480–570°F)results in the best combination of toughness, hardness and corrosion resistance. However, for very large moulds and/or a complicateddesign it is recommended to use a high tem-pering temperature to reduce the residualstresses to a minimum.

Further information is given in the leaflet“Heat Treatment Recommendations forUddeholm Stavax Supreme”.

WeldingGood results when welding tool steel can beachieved if proper techniques are used. Precau-tions such as preheating, heat treatment, postweld heat treatment, joint preparation, selec-tion of consumables, etc. are required.

For best result after polishing and photo-etching use consumables with a matchingchemical composition to the mould steel.

Welding method TIG

Welding consumables STAVAX TIG-WELD

Hardness after welding 54–56 HRC

Heat treatment after welding:

Hardened condition Temper at 10–20°C (50–70°F)below the original temperingtemperature.

Delivery condition Heat treat to 700°C (1290°F) for5 hours. Then cool freely in air.

Further information is given in the Uddeholmbrochure “Welding of Tool Steel” or nearestUddeholm sales office.

Further informationPlease contact your local Uddeholm officefor further information on the selection, heattreatment and application of Uddeholm toolsteels, including the publication “Steels formoulds”.

Photo-etchingUddeholm Stavax Supreme has a very lowinclusion content and a homogeneous micro-structure. The high cleanliness level providesfor good photo-etching/texturing characteris-tics.

The special photo-etching process that mightbe necessary because of Uddeholm StavaxSupreme’s good corrosion resistance is familiarto all the leading photo-etching companies.

Further information is given in the Udde-holm brochure “Photo-etching of tool steel”.

PolishingUddeholm Stavax Supreme has a very goodpolishability in the hardened and temperedcondition.

A slightly different technique, in comparisonwith other Uddeholm mould steels, should beused. The main principle is to use smaller stepsat the fine-grinding/polishing stages and not tostart polishing on too rough of a surface. It isalso important to stop the polishing operationimmediately after the last scratch from theformer grit size has been removed.

More detailed information on polishingtechniques is given in the brochure “Polishingof tool steel”.

The Tool Steel ProcessThe starting material for our tool steel is carefully selected from highquality recyclable steel. Together with ferroalloys and slag formers therecyclable steel is melted in an electric arc furnace. The melt is thentapped into a ladle.

The de-slagger removes oxygen-rich slag and after the deoxidation, alloying and heating of the steel bath are carried out in the ladle fur-nace. Vacuum degassing removes elements such as hydrogen, nitrogenand sulphur.

ESR PLANT

In uphill casting the prepared moulds are filled with a controlled flowof molten steel from the ladle. From this, the steel can go directly toour rolling mill or to the forging press, but also to our ESR furnacewhere our most sophisticated steel grades are melted once again inelectro slag remelting process. This is done by melting a consumableelectrode immersed in an overheated slag bath. Controlled solidifica-tion in the steel bath results in an ingot of high homogeneity with asolidification structure thereby free from macro segregation. Meltingunder a protective atmosphere gives an even better steel cleanliness.

HOT WORKING

From the ESR plant, the steel goes to the rolling mill or to our forgingpress to be formed in to round or flat bars.

Similar to our ESR steels, other high quality steel grades includingthe powder metal steels and spray formed steels, go to the rolling millor the forging press before all of the different bar material is subjectedto a heat treatment operation; either a soft annealing or hardening andtempering. This operation provides the steel with the right balancebetween hardness and toughness.

MACHINING

Before the material is finished and put into stock we also roughmachine the bar profiles to required size and exact tolerances.

In the lathe machining of large dimensions, the steel bar rotatesagainst a stationary cutting tool. In peeling of smaller dimensions, thecutting tools revolve around the bar.

We also saw the ends, and also remove any defects the bar maycontain. Through our surface inspection, ultrasonic inspection and autoinspection of the bars we will safeguard and guarantee the quality ofthe tool steel.
