The CoachesUCONN HEAD COACH BOB DIACOUConn head coach Bob Diaco is in his first year as the head coach at UConn and his first overall as a collegiate head coach. Diaco served on the Notre Dame coaching staff as the defensive coordinator for the past four years and the as-sistant head coach for the past two. He was the 2012 winner of the Frank Broyles Award, given to the top assistant college football coach in the country and was the first Irish assistant to receive the prestigious award. He was a semifinalist for the award in 2011. Diaco joined the Notre Dame staff in 2010 as defensive coordina-tor and inside linebacker coach, took responsibility for the entire linebacker posi-tion in 2011 and added responsibilities as associate head coach in 2012. His 2012 Irish defense ranked among the top 10 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in 12 dif-ferent categories as the school played in the BCS National Championship Game and posted an overall record of 12-1. Diaco has an impressive coaching resume as he served at Virginia (2006-08) as the linebackers and special teams coordi-nator and Cincinnati (2009) as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach before joining the Notre Dame staff. A native of Cedar Grove, N.J., and a 1995 Iowa graduate, Diaco began his coaching career in 1996-97 as a gradu-ate assistant at his alma mater. He then served on the staffs of Western Illinois (1999-2000) as the special teams coordinator and running backs coach, Eastern Michigan (2001-2003) working with the same positions and Central Michigan (2005) as the co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was a two-time All-Big Ten selection at Iowa as a linebacker under Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry and was named the team’s co-MVP in 1995, starting in all 23 games over his junior and senior seasons.

USF HEAD COACH WILLIE TAGGARTWillie Taggart is in his second season as the head coach at USF after serving as head coach at Western Kentucky from 2010-12. He led WKU to a 13-11 record, including 7-5 marks in the final two years and an appearance in the 2012 Little Caesars Bowl. Taggart has an overall record of 19-32 as a collegiate head coach.He served as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky from 1999-2006, ending his tenure as assistant head coach and QB coach. He was the running backs coach at Stanford from 2007-2009 prior to being named the head coach at WKU.

He is a 1998 WKU graduate and was the team’s starting quarterback from 1995-98 and is one of four players at WKU to have his jersey retired.

Coach Bob Diaco, two student-athletes and other individuals associated with UConn football will participate in the hour-long show looking forward to upcom-ing match-ups. THE GAME

UCONN VS. USF HISTORYFor the first time this season, UConn will be playing an opponent it has met before as the BYU, Stony Brook and Boise State games were all first meetings. Friday’s game is the 12th meeting between UConn and USF and the Bulls lead the series 6-5 – with the home team winning every game except a UConn win at USF in 2010 and a USF win last season at Rentschler Field. UConn and USF have met each year since 2005 as conference foes and the Huskies lead that series 5-4. Since becoming conference mates, the home team has won each game in the UConn-USF series except for a 2010 UConn win at USF – a game which clinched the Huskies’ first-ever trip to a Bowl Championship Series Bowl – and last year’s game.

Last season, USF topped UConn by a 13-10 score on October 12, 2013 at Rentschler Field in a game that was the first for interim head coach T.J. Weist.

The game was the first career start for Tim Boyle, who was 15 of 43 in the air for 149 yards. Lyle McCombs rushed for 164 yards and a TD while Geremy Davis and Sean McQuillan each had six receptions. McCombs scored on a 52-yard TD run in the second quarter while Chad Christen nailed a 32-yard FG to open the game’s scoring. USF won the game without scoring an offensive touchdown as it kicked a pair of field goals and scored a TD on a fumble return.

In UConn’s last trip to Tampa, USF defeated UConn by a 13-6 score at Ray-mond James Stadium on November 2, 2012. USF QB B.J. Daniels had a five-yard rush for a TD late in the first quarter to complete an eight-play, 80-yard drive for the only TD of the game as both teams added a pair of field goals. Daniels was 19 for 29 in the air with one INT for 199 yards and rushed for 23 yards. UConn QB Chandler Whitmer was 24 of 38 for 284 yards with two INT. UConn had 327 yards of total offense in the game while USF had 283.

On Dec. 4, 2010 at Raymond James Stadium, Dave Teggart kicked a then career-long 52-yard field goal with 17 seconds left to play to lift UConn to a 19-16 win and clinch the Huskies first-ever appearance in a BCS game.

UConn led at the half 10-3 in 2010, scoring the only touchdown of the first half on a 55-yard interception return by Lawrence Wilson. The Huskies led 16-6 with 13:39 left to go on a 50-yard Teggart FG, but the Bulls responded with 10 points in a little over seven minutes to tie the game at 16-16.

a 29-27 win at Rentschler Field on a snowy Dec. 5. On Oct. 27, 2007, UConn topped the Bulls by a 22-15 score. USF was ranked 11th in the country at the time of the game and it marked UConn’s first win over an Associated Press ranked team at the time of the game. The win propelled UConn to a #16 na-tional ranking the following week -- the first in UConn history.

UCONN-USF CONNECTIONSUConn has 11 players from the state of Florida on its roster –, freshman of-fensive lineman Ryan Crozier (Plantation), redshirt sophomore John Green (Miami), redshirt freshman Javon Hadley (Miami), freshman Ron Johnson (Naples), redshirt sophomore Ellis Marder (Windermere), freshman Dan Oak (Fort Myers), redshirt senior Bryan Paull (Parkland), redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach), redshirt freshman Kyle Schafenacker (Cooper City), redshirt junior Brandon Steg (Coral Springs) and redshirt sophomore Jhavon Wiliams (Delray Beach)…the USF roster is dominated by Florida play-ers and does not have any Connecticut natives on it.

RENTSCHLER GAMEDAY/FAN ACTIVITIESThere will be a number of new fan experiences for UConn football games this season:• There will be Friday night pep rallies for selected games on the Storrs campus during the 2014 season. The remaining pep rallies are Sept. 26 for Temple, Oct. 31 for UCF and Dec. 5 for SMU and Senior Day. The rallies feature the UConn football team, marching band and cheerleaders. The rallies will take place starting at 6:30 p.m. on the Storrs campus at the top of Fairfield Way – across Hillside Road from the Husky Dog Statue. The team and head coach Bob Diaco walk from The Burton Family Football Complex to the pep rally location and arrive there at approximately 7:00 p.m. The team will then walk to the Nathan Hale Inn, where the team will now be staying on nights before home games.• There is a new route for the Husky Walk as the team arrives for games at Rentschler Field this year and fans get a chance to greet the team as they get off their buses and make their way to the stadium. The Husky walk, which takes place approximately, two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, now starts in the Gray Parking Lots and the team will makes its way to the large tunnel near Gate B.• The UConn team now does its pregame warmup in front of the UConn student section on the South End of the stadium – a change from previous seasons. The Huskies will enter the stadium for pregame warmups on the con-course of Rentschler Field and go through the student section.• The break between the third and fourth quarter features “Coach D’s Playlist” as fans during the game will get to guess which song will be played from a collection of Diaco’s favorites based on a list shown earlier in the game. The choice for the BYU game was “This Is How We Roll (Remix)” by Florida Georgia Line and Jason Derulo while the selection for Stony Brook was “One” by Metallica and Boise State was “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid.• The team and staff sings the “UConn Husky” fight song in front of the stu-dent section along with the UConn Marching Band following each game.• Once again, FanFest takes place starting four hours before kickoff up until 30 minutes before the game between Gates A and B outside the stadium gates. The offerings change each game, but activities typically include inflat-able games for children, live bands, promotional vehicles and UConn student-athletes from various teams signing autographs.

Redshirt freshman Josh Marriner (Chesapeake, Va.) and freshman Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) are tied as the second-leading rushers on the team. Freshman tight end Alec Bloom (Ligonier, Pa.) has made three receptions – including one for a 16-yard TD vs. Boise on Saturday.

Redshirt sophomore punter Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) is averaging 40.7 yards per punts with seven of 20 inside the 20-yard line. He was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for his performance vs. Stony Brook on Sept. 6.

UCONN IN CONFERENCE OPENERSUConn opens its second conference season in the Ameri-can Athletic Conference on Friday vs. USF. UConn is 0-1 in American league openers as it lost to USF last year to open conference play. UConn had a 3-6 record in league openers as a member of the Big East Conference.

THE HUSKY CAPTAINSRedshirt senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), redshirt senior cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.), redshirt senior center Alex Mateas (Ottawa, Ontario) and redshirt junior linebacker Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) will captain the Huskies for the 2014 season. The captains were decided by a team vote.

Davis is coming off one of the most prolific seasons for a receiver in program history, hauling in 71 receptions for 1,085 yards in 2013. He became the first receiver in UConn’s FBS era to eclipse 1,000 receiving yards and added three touchdowns. His finest performance came on a record-setting day against Memphis at Rentschler Field on Dec. 6. In a 45-10 win, Davis recorded 15 receptions for 207 yards and a touchdown. The 15 catches are a single-game program record, and the 207 yards rank fifth-most in a game in UConn history. The 6-3 receiver was named to Biletnikoff Award Watch List in July.

Diaco on Davis: “Geremy Davis is big and strong and has an

incredible catch radius. He gets open with body control and body position. He’s an explosive player and he’s a big player. Off the field, he’s kind and a person with incredibly high char-acter and a very good man. He’s a college graduate and an incredible ambassador for the University.”

Jones is a three-year starter in the secondary, starting all 12 games at cornerback last year after starting at safety in 2011 and 2012. Last year, he led the Huskies with three interceptions and finished tied for third on the squad with 60 total tackles. Jones has played in all 37 games of the last three-plus seasons and has 204 career tackles, 14 pass break-ups and six inter-ceptions.

Diaco on Jones: “Byron Jones is intangibly a gifted player. He possesses the speed both short and long. He has both vertical explosiveness and vertical quickness of an elite small-bodied corner, but he’s really big. So he moves like a little guy, but he’s six-foot. He’s a B-plus student in one of the more hard and chal-lenging curriculums that we have at this top 20 public university in the country. He’s a great community guy and great person. He’s so charismatic and commutative and pensive. I’ve joked I could see him be the governor of the state. He’s that special.”

UConn’s most experienced returner on the offensive line, Mateas started all 12 games at center in 2013 and has played in 23 overall games over the last two-plus seasons. He was named to the Rimington Award Spring Watch List in May.

Diaco on Mateas: “Alex Mateas has built himself into a player. He’s worked on his body. He’s always been athletic, with his soccer background. He was a competitive soccer play as a youngster. We see him as one of our ‘key’ starters. I know I have used that term a little bit. He’s another guy that is very helpful and a demonstrative communicator. He doesn’t mind snatching a guy up and he leads from the front so he’s got his teammates respect.”

Vann has played in 23 games over the last three-plus seasons, and made three starts at linebacker last season. He has totaled 61 tackles in his career, with 29 already this season. Vann made a splash playing in his hometown last year when he re-turned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown in an Oct. 19 contest at Cincinnati.

Diaco on Vann: “As a younger guy, but so mature, he’s got a different kind of way about him from the others. He’s not necessarily a rah-rah cheerleader type of guy, but he is vocal and demonstrative. He’s a really good person and very kind, but he also can flip the switch on the field. He can live in the two worlds pretty well. It’s a prerequisite and critical as an inside linebacker. He can be an enforcer and conduct his business that way. He’s not afraid to impose his will on players that need help.”

HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLSUConn has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002Connecticut boasts a 46-27 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 21 of their last 34 regular season non-league games overall. UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013), 1-1 (2014).

OFFENSE NOTES

WHITMER AT STARTING QB Diaco announced on Monday, August 18 that redshirt sophomore Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) would be the starting quarterback for the Husky football team as the 2014 season begins. Redshirt senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) was to serve as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart.

Cochran did start the opener vs. BYU and was 17 of 31 in the air for 171 yards and an interception. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards. Cochran has per-manently discontinued playing football due to sustaining multiple concussions during his career

Whitmer has now started the past two games for the Huskies while sophomore Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) is second on the depth chart.Whitmer started the win over Stony Brook and was 12 of 27 in the air for 142 yards and a touchdown. He was also the Huskies leading rusher with 29 yards on 13 carries. As the starter vs. Boise, Whitmer was 16 of 29 for 209 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions.

Whitmer has now started 18 career games at UConn, with all 12 games in 2012, four in 2013 and the Stony Brook game. He has thrown for 4,024 career yards as a Husky and 17 touchdowns.

Boyle saw his first action of the season on Saturday vs. Boise and was six for nine in the air for 33 yards.

Cochran played in eight games 2013, starting the final four and posting a 3-1 record. He finished the year 111-for-175 in the air with 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns against four interceptions, adding a rushing touchdown as well. He set the UConn single-game record for passing yards with 461 against Memphis (Dec. 7). Cochran was 36-of-54 with four touchdowns in that game, fin-ishing with the second-most completions and third-most attempts in a game in UConn history.

THREE FOR 300Whitmer, Boyle and Cochran each started games last year and all three of them have had a game of 300 or more passing yards. Cochran set the school single-game record for passing yards with 461 against Memphis in the season finale and also had 311 vs. Rutgers, which is 32nd.

Whitmer started the first four games of the season and passed for 349 yards vs. Maryland, which is the 12th highest in school single-game history. Whitmer also passed for 333 yards against Western Michigan in 2012 – which is 20th in school history.

Boyle passed for 310 yards in his first collegiate start vs. USF last season, which is 33rd.

UConn never had a season with three 300-yard QBs and three seasons with two 300-yard QBs – 1990 (Cornelius Benton and Matt DeGennaro), 1991 (Benton and Tom DeSarno) and 1998 (Brian Hoffmann and Shane Stafford).

WHITMER IN UCONN RECORD BOOKSWhitmer’s name started to appear in the UConn record books early in the 2013 season. Here’s a summary: 11th in career total offense with 3,725 yards; eighth in career pass completions with 315; seventh in career passing attempts with 563; eighth in career passing yards with 4,024; fourth in career yards per game with 211.8; and fourth in career yards per attempt with 7.14. His 361 pass attempts in 2012 were sixth in single-season history and his 208 completions were seventh while his 2,664 passing yards were fifth.

DAVIS CLIMBING THE LADDER TOOUConn senior wide receiver Geremy Davis has 16 receptions for 256 yards this season with seven receptions for 96 yards vs. BYU and six receptions for 113 yards against Stony Brook. He had three receptions for 47 yards against Boise State with a 10-yard TD reception. He has made a reception in 29-straight games, dat-ing back to the 2011 season, the 12th-longest such streak in the country.

He is eighth in career receptions with 137 while Carl Bond is sev-enth with 145 from 1995-98. Davis is seventh in career receiving yards with 2,027 while David Dunn (1985-97) is sixth with 2,285. Davis’ 71 receptions last year were fifth in single-season history while his 1,085 yards were sixth.

Davis is sixth in the American in reception yards per game at 85.3 – which is 46th nationally.

DEFENSE NOTES

TACKLING MACHINESEach of UConn’s three starting linebackers for the BYU game

recorded 11 tackles, which was a new career-high for every one of them. Redshirt junior Graham Stewart (Durham, Conn.) also added a tackle for loss and topped his previous personal best of eight stops, which came in the season opener last year against Towson. Jefferson Ashiru (Powder Springs, Ga.) factored into UConn’s lone sack in the BYU game and bested his previous career-high of 10 tackles in last year’s USF game. Marquise Vann (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted his 11 tackles after never previ-ously notching more than five in a game in his career.

Vann has recorded at least nine tackles in every game this sea-son, and leads the Huskies with 29 stops on the year.

SEASONED SECONDARYAll four of UConn’s starters in the secondary have started both games this year and bring plenty of experience back to the unit. Jones leads the way at one of the cornerback spots, starting all 12 games a year ago and having played in all 39 contests during his UConn career. The other cornerback is redshirt sophomore Jhavon Williams (Delray Beach, Fla.), who made five starts in his 10 appearances last season. At one safety spot, redshirt sophomore Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.) started all 12 games in 2013 and earned national recognition, as he was named a Freshman All-America Honorable Mention by Scout.com. Meli-fonwu finished second on the squad with 70 tackles and added two interceptions and two forced fumbles. He led UConn with 10 tackles against Boise State. Redshirt junior Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) takes the other safety spot and has played in 22 games over the last two-plus years – including both this year. Adams is third on UConn this season with 22 tackles.

ON THE NOSERedshirt junior Julian Campenni (West Pittston, Pa.) and redshirt freshman Mikal Myers (Newburgh, N.Y.) are splitting time at nose guard this season, and had a dominant performance against the Stony Brook front on Sept. 6. Campenni tied a career-high with six tackles, making 1.5 stops behind the line of scrimmage. Myers set a new career-high with four tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and his first career sack.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

NEW FACES IN KICK GAMEUConn has a pair of new faces in both the kicking and punting department this season with the graduation of PK Chad Christen and P Cole Wagner. Wagner is second in UConn career punting average with 40.7 yards.

Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) is now the starting kicker this season after redshirting in 2013. He has converted all six field goals in his career, knocking down five straight to start this season with a long of 42 against Stony Brook.

Redshirt sophomore Justin Wain (Wilmington, N.C.) is now the starting punter and the BYU contest was his first game action. Wain has 20 punts this season for an average of 40.7 yards per boot. Seven of his 20 punts have been inside the opponents 20-yard line – including six of his nine vs. Stony Brook on Sept. 6. Wain was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for his perfor-mance vs. SBU.

Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Freshman Chase Briley (Hartford, Conn.), who played at Capital Prep High School, will be the backup at both kicker and punter.

THE RETURN GAMESenior Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) provided a spark for the Huskies on Saturday, Sept. 6 when he returned a third-quarter punt 72-yards for a touch-down to give UConn a 19-10 lead with 9:22 left in the period against Stony Brook. This is Foxx’s first season returning punts and now has four returns for 84 yards. He leads the American Athletic Conference at 21.0 yards per punt return and is 10th nationally. Foxx was named the American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week after the Stony Brook game and the ECAC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week.

Foxx’s punt return for a TD was the first for UConn since Nick Williams had an 80-yarder vs. Pittsburgh on Nov. 9, 2012 at Rentschler Field.

Foxx has also been part of the rotation for kickoff returns for the Huskies and has three for 48 yards this year. Arkeel Newsome (Ansonia, Conn.) leads the Huskies in that category with six returns for 115 yards with a long of 34.

STADIUM/ATTENDANCE NOTES

RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies moved into Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn entered its 12th season of play there on Friday. Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Connecticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.

UConn has an all-time record of 49-26 at Rentschler Field and a 27-13 mark in non-conference games. UConn has played to 92.6-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,742,370 fans, or an average of 37,059 per game.

UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rentschler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - BYU junior quarterback Taysom Hill threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another two as the Cougars defeated the University of Connecticut football team in the 2014 opener for both teams. The game was played before a crowd of 35,150 at Rentschler Field and was the debut for new UConn head coach Bob Diaco.Hill completed 28 of 36 passes to nine receivers without an interception. He went 17 of 20 to lead the Cougars to a 28-7 halftime advantage, and was BYU’s leading rusher with 97 yards on 12 carries.“He was resilient and methodical and 28 points in the first half was ideal and that was something I was hoping to see,” BYU coach Bronco Men-denhall said. The Cougars put up 513 yards of offense, 329 of that before intermission.Husky sophomore Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) and senior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) split quarterback duties and threw for a combined 284 yards. Cochran was 17 of 31 for 171 yards. He also threw an intercep-tion on the Huskies’ second drive deep in BYU territory. Whitmer was eight of 17 for 113 yards.“That’s the point you’re at right now,” Diaco said, who played 50 players combined on offense and defense. “For the players to get better, they have to play in games.”BYU got off to a quick start as Hill, who last year ran for more than 1,300 yards and passed for just under 3,000, capped the Cougars’ opening 15-play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard run. He then found Mitch Mathews wide open over the middle from 26 yards out, after UConn fumbled on the Huskies’ first offensive play.Hill danced away from pressure late in the first half and found Terenn Houk open to his left for a 35-yard touchdown catch-and-run that made it 28-7 at the half. The quarterback capped the game with a 26-yard touchdown run to complete a 90-yard, fourth-quarter drive that sent the fans to the exits.Penalties slowed the game down as BYU committed 15 of them for 150 yards. UConn was flagged eight times for 90 yards.A fumble by BYU’s Mathews at midfield led to UConn’s only touchdown. Whitmer led the Huskies on a six-play drive that ended with freshman redshirt Josh Marriner (Chesapeake, Va.) scoring from a yard out in the second quarter.Redshirt sophomore Bobby Puyol (North Palm Beach, Fla.) made a 35-yard field goal for UConn in the fourth quarter.The Huskies put together an 11-play drive to start the second half, but failed after faking a 40-yard field goal.UConn’s top receiver, senior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.), finished with seven catches for 96 yards. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Connecticut senior wide receiver Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) had a 72-yard punt return a touchdown in the third quarter to help lead the Husky football team to a 19-16 win over Stony Brook on Saturday at Rentschler Field before a crowd of 23,543.The win improves UConn to 1-1 on the season and gives Husky head coach Bob Diaco his first career college head coaching win. Stony Brook falls to 0-2 on the season.UConn redshirt senior wide receiver Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) caught six passes for 113 yards and a 30-yard touchdown and moved into seventh place on the Huskies all-time receiving list with 1,980 career yards.“It took us 10 weeks last year just to get one win,” Davis said. “A win is a win. These guys fought hard -- defense, offense and special teams.”The Seawolves, from the powerful Colonial Athletic Association, led much of the first half and trailed just 12-10 at halftime.Foxx gave UConn a 19-10 lead in the third quarter when he grabbed a 61-yard Luke Allen punt that had bounced over his head, turned left, then reversed field and found a seam down the middle.“He definitely outkicked his coverage,” Foxx. “I got a lucky bounce and when I was turning around I noticed that I had a whole lot of field to work with, so I just did what I can do and I had great blockers.”Stony Brook, which outgained UConn 300 yards to 223, put together a 14-play, 88-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Conor Bednarski to Will Tye. The extra point was blocked. Whitmer completed 12 of 27 passes for 142 yards. He also was the Huskies leading rusher with 52 yards on 13 carries.UConn was also helped by its kicking game. Puyol’s first field goal was the longest of his career and redshirt freshman punter Justin Wain (Wilming-ton, N.C.) averaged 41.8 yards on nine punts. Stony Brook was forced to start six second-half drives inside its own 20-yard line.“The team today showed a lot of grit and grind,” said Diaco. “Our brother-hood shined through. SCOUTING STONY BROOKStony Brook is a member of the Colonial Athletic Association and

the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision. The Seawolves bring

an 0-1 record into the game after a 13-7 loss at home to Bryant on

August 28. Head coach Chuck Priore is in his ninth season at the

school, having led Stony Brook to the NCAA FCS playoffs in both

2011 and ’12. Previously, Priore was the head coach at Trinity in Hart-

ford from 2000-05, where he led the Bantams to four league titles.

DAVIS CLIMBING THE RECORD LADDER Senior wide receiver Geremy Davis had seven receptions for 96 yards

in the season-opener vs. BYU last Friday. He has made a reception in

27-straight games, dating back to the 2011 season. He is eighth in ca-

reer receptions with 128 while Carl Bond is seventh with 145 from

1995-98. Davis is ninth in career receiving yards with 1,867 while

Kashif Moore (2008-11) is eighth is 1,799. Davis’ 71 receptions last

year were fifth in single-season history while his 1,085 yards were sixth.

LOTS OF HUSKY PUPS SEE FIRST ACTIONThe Huskies played a total of 57 players against BYU, 19 of them

(33.3 percent) making their first collegiate appearance. Among the

highlights were redshirt freshman Josh Marriner rushing for UConn’s

lone touchdown of the night; freshman Arkeel Newsome making an

18-yard reception the first quarter; redshirt freshman punter Justin

Wain averaging 35.8 yards on four punts; redshirt freshman Tommy

Myers making his first career reception in the third quarter; redshirt

freshman linebacker Cameron Stapleton combining on a second-quar-

ter sack; freshman Alec Bloom having two receptions for 24 yards.

The Broncos, who put up 676 yards of offense a week ago against Colorado State, were limited to 292 yards by the Husky defense. Boise State took advantage of UConn offensive miscues by scoring 14 points on turnovers.The Broncos scored on a fumble recovery in the first quarter and an inter-ception in the fourth. Boise held UConn to 48 yards rushing and sacked the Huskies quarterbacks eight times.Boise State, which ran 89 plays a week ago (60 in the first half alone) had just 56 this week. They did not have an offense snap for the first eight minutes of the game, but by that time the Broncos were up 7-3.UConn fumbled on its fifth play from scrimmage and Boise’s Tanner Vallejo picked the ball up in the backfield and ran untouched 31-yards for a touchdown.Hedrick found Miller for a 35-yard score in the second quarter, and Miller returned the favor on a trick play a few minutes later, hitting Hedrick for a seven-yard touchdown after getting the ball on an end-around. Boise led at the half 21-10. UConn closed the gap to 24-21 in the third quarter. Shane Williams-Rhodes muffed a punt return and UConn redshirt sophomore linebacker Jon Hicks (Palmyra, Pa.) recovered. UConn redshirt senior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) then found redshirt senior Geremy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) for a 10-yard touchdown and hit fresh-man running back Arkeel Newsome for a two-point conversion (Ansonia, Conn.) to close it to 24-21 Boise.Boise’s Jonathan Moxey made a key fourth-quarter interception at the UConn 37-yard line. That led to a nine-yard touchdown pass from Hedrick to Miller in the back of the end zone that made it 31-21.Hedrick completed 19 of 27 passes for 233 yards and two scores. The Broncos got their second defensive score with four minutes left in the game when Donte Deayon ripped the ball and ran 50 yards down the right sideline for a score that made the final 38-21.Whitmer drove UConn 83 yards for its first touchdown, finding senior wide receiver Deshon Foxx (Lynchburg, Va.) down the left sideline for a 48-yard reception and hitting freshman tight end Alex Bloom (Ligonier, Pa.) over the middle for a 16-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 10-7 lead. Foxx finished with 107 yards receiving on six catches.Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, who came in averaging 158 yards a game and nearly six yards a run, was held to just 39 yards on 18 carries.
