UCO Admissions Information
Undergraduate Admissions TheOfficeofUndergraduateAdmissions(UA)providesinfor-mationtoprospectivefreshmenandtransferstudentsinterestedin attending the University of Central Oklahoma. Undergraduate Admissionsistypicallythefirstpointofcontactforprospectivestudents,theirparents,andacademiccounselors. Campusvisitsareofferedthroughthisofficeandprovidestudentsthechancetotourcampus,visitwithaprofessor,viewthevarioushousingopportunities,andobtaininformationconcerningtheir intended major. AdmissionCounselorsattendcollegefairsandmakepresenta-tionstohighschoolsandcommunitycollegesinthestateofOkla-homa and out-of-state. Admission Requirements StandardsforadmissiontoUCOareestablishedbytheOklahomaStateRegentsforHigherEducation.Thesestandardsarebasedonprospectivestudents’residencestatusandpreviouseducationalbackground. Allstudentspursuinganareaofstudyleadingtoabachelor’sdegreemustmeetbothperformancestandardsandcurricularstandards.Performancestandardsrefertoastudent’srankinthehighschoolgraduatingclassandoverallgradepointaverageinthecorecurriculumcourses.Itcanalsobebasedonadmissiontestscores.Curricularstandardsrefertoastudent’sformaleducationalbackgroundinthesubjectareasofEnglish,science,mathematics,history,andcitizenshipskills(aswellastwoadditionalunitsfromforeignlanguage,computerscienceandthesubjectslistedabove). Forfirst-time entering freshmen,proficiencyinthesecurricu-larareascanbedemonstratedbyhavingsuccessfullycompletedfouryearsofEnglish,threeyearsoflaboratoryscience,threeyearsofmathematics(AlgebraIoraboveandAlgebraII),threeyearsofhistoryandcitizenshipskills(includingoneyearofAmericanHis-toryandtwoadditionalyearsfromHistory,Economics,Geogra-phy,NonWesternCulture),andtwoadditionalunitsfromsubjectspreviouslylistedorfromcomputerscienceorforeignlanguageatthehighschoollevel. Studentswhohavenotcompletedtheabovesubjectcollege-boundcoreareasatthehighschoollevelcandemonstratesufficientcurricularbackgroundandknowledgeforcollegestudy.Todoso,theymustsuccessfullypassaplacementexaminationinthedeficientareaorattainaminimumscoreof19intheappropriatesubjectpor-tionoftheACT. GED studentswhomeetfreshmanadmissionstandardsmustwaituntiltheirgraduatinghighschoolclassisduetoenterthecollegiatecircuit.Alternatively,theymayfileforspecialearlyadmissionbysubmittingthestandardapplicationmaterials,writ-ingaletterofintent,andcompletingapersonalinterviewwiththeDirectorofAdmissions.
Transfer studentscandocumentproficiencyinthecurricularareasinoneoffourways:1)successfulcompletionofcollege-boundcoreareasatthehighschoollevel,2)achievementofapass-ingscoreontheappropriateplacementexamination,3)successfulcompletionoftheapproveddevelopmentalorremedialcourse(s),or4)successfulcompletionofacollegelevelcourseinthecurricu-lar area. Preliminaryadmissiondecisionscanbemadebasedon:1)six-semesterhighschooltranscriptsfromstudentswhohaveearneda20ACTcompositeorabove,2)sevensemesterhighschooltranscriptswiththerequiredGPAandclassrank,3)finalhighschooltranscriptwithacorecalculationofa2.7GPAorhigheror4)collegetranscriptswithonlythecurrentsemesteroutstand-ing,exceptincaseswherethegradepointaverageorcurriculardeficienciesareborderline.FinaladmissiondecisionsCANNOTbemadeuntilallcredentialshavebeenreceivedbytheOfficeofUndergraduateAdmissions.Alltranscripts,testscores,correspon-dence,orothermaterialssubmittedforthepurposeofapplyingforadmissionbecomethepropertyoftheUniversityandwillnotbereturned. Application Fee Allfirst-timeapplicants,studentswhohavegraduatedfromUCO,applicantsforaprevioustermwhoneverenrolled,studentswhohavebeenoutforayearorlonger,oranyonewhohasbeensuspendedandreinstatedaftersittingouttherequiredtimewillbechargedanon-refundable,non-transferable,$50.00applicationfeewiththeApplicationforAdmission.ApplicationsmadeforthespringtermandsubmittedafterDecember1standapplica-tionsmadeforthefalltermandsubmittedafterAugust1stwillbeassessedanadditional$50latefee.Thisfeemustbepaidbeforeanapplicationwillbeprocessed,anyunpaidapplicationswillbetreatedasincompleteandnotprocesseduntilpaymentisreceived.Applicationsareonlineatwww.uco.edu/apply,clickonthe“ApplyNow”button. Non-Academic Admission Requirements TheUniversityofCentralOklahomamaytakeintoaccountnon-academiccriteriainadmittingfirst-time,readmissionortransferstudentstoincludewhetheranapplicanthasbeenexpelled,suspended,placedonprobation,deniedadmission,ordeniedreadmissionbyanyothereducationalinstitution.Iftheapplicantwasastudentatthetimeofthequestionableconductandiftheconductinquestionwouldhavebeengroundsforexpulsion,suspension,probationordismissal,then,denialofadmissiontotheUniversityofCentralOklahomamayoccur. Readmission FormerstudentswhohavenotattendedtheUniversityofCentralOklahomaforaperiodofoneyearorlongermustbereadmittedbeforeenrollment.Centralalumniwhoarehopingtotakeadditionalundergraduatecoursesmustalsoreapplyforadmis-sion.AnapplicationforreadmissionandofficialtranscriptsofallworkcompletedsinceleavingUCOmustbeonfileintheOfficeofUndergraduateAdmissionstobeconsideredforreadmission. Matriculation *TheUCOCatalogineffectatthetimeofastudent’sinitialenrollmentshallgovernthestudent’sdegreerequirements.Astudentmaynotdeclareamajorthathasbeensubsequentlyinac-tivated,evenifthatmajorwasactiveinacatalogyearforwhichthestudentiseligible. Astudentwhomaintainscontinuousenrollment(noabsenceoftwoormoreyears),butfailstocompletedegreerequirementswithintenyears,willberequiredtomeetrequirementsunderanewercatalog. Admission of Academically Suspended Students from Other System Institutions Studentswithsuspensionsfromotherinstitutionsmayapplyforprobationaryadmission.Tobeconsideredforprobationaryadmission,studentsmusthavemetallotherapplicableUCOadmissioncriteriaatthetimeoffirstcollegeadmission.Applica-tionforadmissiononprobationisnotguaranteedandacommit-teewilldeterminethestudent’spotentialforsuccess.Ifadmissionisgranted,limitationofhoursandspecificcoursemandatesmaybeimposedasaconditionforadmission.Futureenrollmentswilldependuponthestudentmeetingretentiongradepointaveragerequirements.Ifadmissionisdenied,thedecisionofthecommit-teeisfinalforthatacademicterm. Resident Status Prospectivestudentsareclassifiedasin-stateresidentsorout-of-statenon-residentsforadmissionandtuitionpurposesbasedoninformationprovidedontheapplicationforadmissionandtheapplicant’sacademichistory.ProgramswithenrollmentlimitsmaygivepriorityadmissionorclassenrollmentpreferencetoOklahomaresidents. Allstudents,exceptbonafideresidentsofOklahoma,mustpaythenonresidenttuitionfeeinadditiontoothertuitionandenrollmentfeesandmustmeetnonresidentadmissioncriteria.ActiveUniformedService/DischargedorReleasedfromActiveUniformedServiceforwhomOklahoma is the Home of Record, MembersoftheActiveDutyArmedServicesstationedinOklaho-ma,DischargedorReleasedfromActiveUniformedService(Re-gardlessoftheHomeofRecord)-Isapersonwhowasdischargedorreleasedfromaperiodofnotfewerthanninety(90)daysofac-tivedutyuniformedservice,lessthanfive(5)yearsbeforethedateofenrollmentinthecourse(s)concerned,andispursuingacourseofeducationwitheducationalassistanceunderChapters30or33ofTitle38oftheUnitedStatesCodewhilelivinginOklahoma,orMilitary Reserve Member on Full-Time Active Duty and their dependentsareeligibleforin-statetuition.Theymustprovideacopyoftheirmilitaryorders,DD214,orEnlistmentpaperstobereclassified. English Proficiency Requirement Priortoadmission,allapplicantsforwhomEnglishisasecondlanguageshallberequiredtopresentevidenceofproficiencyintheEnglishlanguage.Thefollowingareconsideredacceptableproofs:A. Forapplicantsseekingadmissionbytransferfromanaccredited

C. Forallotherapplicantsforundergraduateadmission,acceptableproofofEnglishproficiencyshallbe:1. Ascoreof500orhigherontheTOEFLtest.Thetestmust
havebeentakenatan“International”ora“Special”testingcenterandthescorereportsubmitteddirectlyfromthetestingagency.TheresultoftheTOEFLtestadministered“Institutionally”willbeacceptedonlyifadministeredattheUniversityofCentralOklahomaoronthecomputerbasedtest.
2. AnapplicantnoteligibleundertheprovisionabovemayfurnishproofofaTOEFLscoreof460orhigherplusproofofsubsequentsuccessfulcompletionofamini-mum12weeksofstudyatanEnglishlanguageschooloperatedbyaninstitutionofhigherlearningoraprivateEnglishlanguageschoolapprovedbytheOklahomaStateRegentsforHigherEducation.
3. Ascoreof5.5orhigherontheInternationalEnglishLan-guageTestingSystem(IELTS)undertheIntensiveEnglishProgram(IEP)optionasanalternativeforadmission.
Definition of Admission Terms ACT-AstandardizedexaminationproducedbytheAmericanCollegeTestingprogramusedforadmissionpurposes.TherearetwotypesofACTexams.OnetypeofACTexamisreferredtoas“na-tional,”meaningitwastakenonanationaltestdate.Thesedatesarescheduledayearinadvancewithoneexambeingofferedapproxi-matelyeveryothermonth.TheothertypeofACTexamisreferredtoas“residual,”meaningitisofferedbyacollegeoruniversityonaregularbasis,butnotonthesamedayanationalexamisscheduled.ResidualACTscoresareonlyapplicableattheinstitutionwherethetestwasadministeredandcanonlybetakenonceperNovember-Octoberyear.NOTE: Only the national exam is acceptable for NCAA athletic eligibility and some academic scholarships. The ACT has four subtests, the sum of whose scores must meet the acceptable composite score. SAT-TheScholasticAchievementTestisastandardizedexami-nationproducedbytheCollegeBoardandusedforadmissionpur-poses.Ithastwocomponents(mathscoreandverbalscore)addedtogethertoformthecombinedscore.Thewritingportionofthetestisnotconsideredintheadmissiondecision. Remediation of Curricular and Performance Deficiencies NewfreshmenandtransferstudentswhohavenotcompletedthecorecurriculumrequirementinhighschoollistedunderNEWFRESHMANADMISSIONorwhohavenotdemonstratedper-formanceproficiencyrequirementswillbeconsidereddeficientandmustremediatethesedeficienciesasfollows:
1. IfastudenthasdeficienciesinEnglish,math,scienceorreading,thestudentmaydooneofthefollowing:a. SubmitanACTnationalsubscoreorUCOresidual
ACTsubscoreof19oraboveinthecurricularareainwhichthedeficiencyexists.(ACTscoresmustbelessthanfiveyearsold.)
b. TaketheCollegePlacementTest(CPT)andmaketheappropriatescoreinthecurricularareainwhichthedeficiencyexists.

First-timefreshmenmustremediateallbasicskillscoursecur-riculardeficienciesanddemonstrateaminimallevelofproficiencyinthesubjectareasofEnglish,math,scienceandreadingwithin24credithoursattemptedatUCO.TransferstudentsmustremediateallbasicskillscoursecurriculardeficienciesanddemonstrateaminimallevelofproficiencyinthesubjectareasofEnglish,math,scienceandreadingwithinthefirst12semestercredithoursatUCO. If the student fails to remediate the deficiency in the designated time, the student will not be allowed to enroll in any course except the course(s) required to remediate the deficiency.
Special Admission Programs Studentswhodonotqualifyunderpreviouslystatedacademicandcurricularrequirementsmaybeconsideredforadmissionunderoneofthefollowingcategories.A. Alternative Admission The University of Central Oklahoma may admit a limited numberoffirst-timefreshmenwhodonotmeettheestablishedcriteriaforregularfreshmanadmission. Special Note: Certification requirements established by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and the Oklahoma Commission for Teacher Preparation changed beginning September 1, 1999. Individuals who obtain certification after that date are subject to these new regulations.
