Springtime greetings!

Oceanids has had a productive winter, with all our interest groups going strong. We had a very successful whale-watching trip, and met some student award recipients at the Hearts and Scholars dinner.

Our eBay fund-raising effort should be the best yet, with a great variety of items going up for auction, and a good number of sales. We’ll be continuing through March, and probably into April. This year a number of Oceanids members have bought items - they’re ter-rific bargains - so if you haven’t looked at what’s out there, check it out. You’ll find the web site elsewhere in the Newsletter.

We’ve had a couple of very productive meetings with the new Dean of the International Center, Dr. Kirk Simmons. Among other things, he has worked very hard, and appears to have succeeded in relieving us of parking fees which were $6000 this year, and sched-uled to go up next year. When this happens, we will have that much more to provide awards and services for students - which is why we exist! You’ll have an opportunity to meet him at the Spring Luncheon May 16 (if he accepts our invitation).

I want to formally welcome our incoming President, Mary Hanson. She’s a dynamo, and watch for ex-citing new things to happen under her aegis. She’s already involved in a lot of activities, especially all aspects of the eBay activity. If you don’t know Mary already, come to the Spring Luncheon and introduce yourself. If you do know her, come to the Spring Luncheon and join us in welcoming her. You get the message: come to the Spring Luncheon. All the infor-mation is on the front of this Newsletter.

I have enjoyed being your president for the past two

years - much more than I’d expected. I want to stay on, so I’ve volunteered to be Recording Secretary It’s a great organization. Let us know if you would be willing to be part of the Board. There are always jobs, large and small, to be done.I’ll see you all in May…….. Ruth Stern, Prez

E-BAY UPDATE

We’re off to a great start, thanks to the many donors and volunteers among our Oceanids members. By the time you read this we’ll be winding thingsdown, however, but you can check what’s still available by going to: http://www.ebay.com/sch/oceanids1/m.html? ipg+50& sop=12& rdc=1

We have enjoyed working on this projectwith so many of you, and the income from the sale will be applied to the good causes Oceanids supports.

Not all of our treasures will have sold, of course, so we plan to have some lovely items available for YOU to purchase at the spring luncheon on May 16. Also, bring your own donations for our $5 “Grab and Go” table. See you there. Judy Vacquier and Mary Hanson

Another different Christmas

Roswitha’s story about her Christmas trip to the desert triggered a review of our

experience of Christmas in Bali.

Our youngest son is teaching at the Green School (greenschool.org), an

international school near Ubud, the cultural center of Bali. It is located in the

middle of the jungle on the Ayung river. The classrooms for each grade are pretty

far apart, all built with bamboo and thatched. There are no windows and the

breeze can pass through the open rooms to make the heat tolerable. “Green” is

taken seriously at the school. Solar panels produce electricity and a vortex under construction on the river will hopefully work soon. Each class has their own

garden (the vegetables and rice are used to prepare lunch) and there are some

animals to be taken care of by the students. The school had success with breeding

the endangered Bali starling and was able to release the first birds into the natural

habitat.

Our whole family was in Bali for the Christmas break. Bali, being a Hindu island

had very few signs of Christmas. Only places that catered to tourists displayed

decorations or an artificial tree. We did not miss the hype of the season.

On Christmas day we had booked a bike trip. After being picked up in Ubud we

were driven to the mountain pass of Penelokan (Kintamani) with a great view of

the still active volcano Mt. Batur (last time in 1994), and its crater lake. We mostly

coasted through the heartland of Bali, traveling downhill from an elevation of

1,360 m to 300 m on non tourist back roads and minor village roads with little

traffic, enjoying the beautiful Balinese countryside. We rode through lush forested

areas, Balinese plantations of local vegetables and exotic tropical fruits, through

timeless small villages and lush rice paddy panoramas. Adorable Balinese

children were calling out ‘hellos’. We had numerous stops on the way, including a

visit to a Balinese home/compound, where you got to see first hand how the Balinese live outside the tourist areas. Things in the compound were rather simple,

especially the kitchen with just a couple of burners, a wood stove, a dish rack and

some pans, no cabinets. We were told that the river is the source of water, the

place to bathe and to do the wash. Sleeping quarters are assigned according to the

ages of the sons. The youngest one will be responsible to take care of the aging

parents. Retirement homes do not exist in this society.

The landscape was stunning, the well groomed rice paddies, the lush forests with

banana, papaya, or jackfruit trees, ferns and vines and elephant grass, the villages

on the crests of the hillsides rather than the valleys. There were temples

everywhere, usually three larger ones per village (community, ceremony,

cremation) and in addition the private ones on each compound, small or more

elaborate.

The evening was filled by a Balinese spiritual dance performance.

Thank you to Oceanids Fund donors

We gratefully acknowledge the many Oceanids who, when renewing their Annual dues, include a donation to one of our Funds that support our student Fellowships and Service Awards. Thank you

also to our Sustaining and Life members who make an additional annual donation. There are several

ways you can provide financial support for UCSD students; a gift to Oceanids Memorial Fellowship

Fund will help fund graduate fellowships, a gift to Oceanids Undergraduate Service Awards helps to

fund annual awards to graduating seniors, and a gift to the Oceanids General Projects Fund supports many campus activities such as the Student Run Free Clinic, and the Chancellor's 5K Fun Run to

benefit undergraduate scholarships at UC San Diego. Oceanids has a long history of financial support

to the UC San Diego campus. One of our Funds, the Frieda Daum Urey Fellowship Fund, was created

in 1993 to support graduate or professional school women re-entering academia after a significant

hiatus. Another fund, the Bertha Lebus Fund was established in 1997, also to support a graduate student returning to university after a break.

Thank you to the following people who have continued this fine tradition and contributed this year.

And most importantly, your support will continue to support UC San Diego student scholarships. Join Chancellor Pradeep K. Khosla for a 3.1 mile adventure through campus—past King Triton, the world famous Geisel Library, the Sun God, a 23 foot high stone bear, and a house mysteriously perched on the Jacobs School of Engineering! Afterward, enjoy live music, an interactive family zone, a beer garden, a healthy living fair and more. Since it was established in 1996, the Triton 5K (formerly the Chancellor’s Challenge 5K Run/Walk for Scholars) has raised more than $3 million, benefiting more than 900 motivated and ambitious students with scholarship support. The event was founded by former UC San Diego Chancellor Robert C. Dynes to rally the campus in support of undergraduate students. Most recently, Chancel-lor Pradeep K. Khosla will take the helm, helping to top the $3 million fundraising mark and growing the event to include 2,500 participants and volunteers each year. The Triton 5K is an important campus tradition with a legacy that will last long into the future. Learn more about the event and register here: http://5k.ucsd.edu/
