UC Irvine Libraries Update A Newsletter for Faculty As a scholar and UC Irvine faculty member, you may have concerns about new options for publica- tion, your intellectual property rights, the availability of scholarly publications in digital or print form, the nature of your contracts with publishers, how your stu- dents use online resources, and related issues. The traditional structures and processes of schol- arly communication are rapidly changing. New information tech- nologies play a significant role, but intellectual, cultural, socio- logical, legal, and financial issues also are at play at the international and national levels, within both higher education and specific scholarly disciplines. The UC Irvine Libraries have established a program to explore the many evolving issues of schol- arly communication. The program will be inaugurated at a campus forum this spring, co-hosted by the Ex- ecutive Vice Chancellor and the University Librarian. We intend to ad- dress the major issues that are posing challenges for faculty and librarians, including: New opportunities and alternatives for scholarly publishing, and how they affect the nature of research and learning Evolving definitions of “publishing” Economics of scholarly communication Publishing and the academic reward and promotion system Copyright and contract law, includ- ing fair use and intellectual property rights Publishers’ contracts and open access Digital and print materials in the classroom and in distance education New roles for librarians in scholarly communication Historically, academic libraries have played a key role in aspects of scholarly communication. The California State Library has awardeda one-year grant in the amount of $65,540to the Libraries for processing 13 archivalcollections in the Southeast AsianArchive. The project will make theseunique resources available forresearch use for the first time,complete with searchable findingaids in the Online Archive ofCalifornia. The grant began onOctober 1, 2002 and runs throughSeptember 30, 2003. On December 3rd, 2002, the UC IrvineLibraries presented renowned chore-ographer Donald McKayle in a programcelebrating the publication of hisnew autobiography, TranscendingBoundaries: My Dancing Life. McKaylewas featured in conversation with JillBeck, Dean of the Claire Trevor Schoolof the Arts, about his multifaceted ca-reer as choreographer, director, dancer,and professor of dance. A highlight ofthe evening was the presentation ofvideo excerpts from Heartbeats of aDancemaker, a new PBS documentaryabout McKayle and his career. Thepreview included footage from classicperformances of McKayle’s worksin the 1950s and 1960s, as well as clipsfrom premieres of recent works.

Professor McKayle’s distinguishedcareer began more than 50 years agoand has spanned choreography,directing, writing, teaching, andperforming in concert dance,theater, film, recording, and television.Deeply rooted in the Americanexperience, his dances are infused withpassion, optimism, and a reverence

for the heroism of thehuman being in the face ofsuffering and loss. Hischoreography and directionfor Broadway musicaltheater, television, and filmhave been honored with fiveTony nominations, theNAACP Image Award, anEmmy nomination, andmany other honors andawards.

McKayle joined UCI’sfaculty as Professor ofDance in 1989. He is incharge of graduate choreo-graphic thesis projects,serves as Artistic Directorof UCI Dance, and teachesadvanced modern technique andchoreography. In 1998, he receivedthe Distinguished Faculty Lecture-ship Award for Research.

In 1997 Professor McKayle generouslyagreed to donate his papers to theLibraries’ Department of SpecialCollections and Archives. This

extraordinary scholarly resourcechronicles his entire career, from hisearliest productions in the 1950sthrough his latest work in 2002.Materials include photographs, manu-scripts, videos, costume drawings,programs, posters, and publishedarticles.

The Best of Both Worlds: eScholarship at the UC Irvine Libraries

The California Digital Library’s (CDL)eScholarship program exists to enablefaculty innovation in electronic pub-lishing. eScholarship was founded in2000 as a collaboration among thenine UC campuses and CDL with thegoal of providing faculty with custom-

ized support for experimen-tation with electronicscholarly communication,such as access to peer reviewmanagement software. Asexperience is gained with avariety of scholarly initiatives,eScholarship will develop arobust infrastructure and afully sustainable model formanaging digital scholarlyinformation, from produc-tion, to access, to use.

Any University of Californiaresearch unit (ORU or MRU),institute, center, or depart-ment is eligible to join.

Individuals may publish througheScholarship, but a “sponsoring unit”such as the home academic depart-ment must take full editorialresponsibility for their contributions.The repository is author-friendly:individual authors retain copyright in

all their writings. Participation is freeto both authors and sponsoring units.

Content does not have to be authoredby UC faculty to be included in thee-repository. For example, a unit mayuse the repository to post papers froma UC-sponsored conference that in-cludes authors from both UC and otheruniversities. Previously publishedmaterial is welcomed. Any content iseligible for inclusion as long as allapplicable policies are followed (e.g.,copyright), Web delivery is technicallyfeasible (e.g., the content can be postedusing existing file formats), and thesponsoring unit deems it appropriate.

The UC Irvine Libraries will beconducting a survey this spring toevaluate user perceptions of libraryservice quality. The Web-based sur-vey instrument uses 25 questions tomeasure library users’ minimum,perceived, and desired levels ofservice quality in four key dimen-sions: “Access to Information”,“Affect of Service”, “Library as Place”,and “Personal Control”. More than78,000 users at 164 institutionsthroughout North America completedthe survey in 2002.

Library User Survey Coming Soon

The survey, known as LibQUAL+,is one of the Association ofResearch Libraries’ (ARL) NewMeasures Initiative projects, whichseek to develop innovative ways forlibraries to articulate their centralityto their parent institutions. The UCIrvine Libraries are especially inter-ested in incorporating outcome-basedassessment into our planning efforts.University Librarian Gerald Munoffhas stated “Outcome measures areone indicator of how well an organi-zation serves its users, as well as ofan institution’s efficiency and effec-tiveness. The LibQUAL+ survey willbe one of a variety of measures we willbe using to better understand andserve our users’ needs.”

The survey will be conducted fromApril 7 to April 28, 2003. We will beasking a large sampling of faculty,

graduate students, undergraduatestudents and staff to complete theweb-based questionnaire, whichshould take no more than 10 minutes.Incentives to increase participationwill be offered. We will share theresults with the University commu-nity in Fall 2003.

The Libraries are an increasingly vitalplayer in UC Irvine’s educationalmission. Last year we taught nearly14,000 students and campus visitorsin a variety of workshops, course-based sessions, and other programs,and we anticipate even more activityas UC Irvine continues to grow. TheDepartment of Education and Out-reach (E&O) provides leadership forthe Libraries’ programs, which em-phasize research skills, informationliteracy, information technologies,and lifelong learning. E&O is led byCathy Palmer. Stephanie Davis-Kahl,Research Librarian for Educa-tion and Outreach, joined UCIrvine and the department inApril 2002.

E&O staff work closely withfaculty, other research librar-ians, and others on campus toassess needs, design instruc-tional offerings, integrateinformation literacy into thecurriculum, and assess learn-ing outcomes. In addition,E&O identifies partnershipopportunities both on and offcampus that highlight theLibraries’ instructional contri-butions to the academicmission of the University. Inresponse to demand fromfaculty, we are currently work-ing on curriculum design for a“Preventing Plagiarism” work-shop that will serve as the basisfor an online tutorial.

Several exciting new opportunitieshave resulted from collaboration withUC Irvine’s Center for EducationalPartnerships (CFEP). For example,our SPIRIT Program (School Partner-ships for Instruction, Research, andInformation Technology) allows usto provide student educational en-richment and teacher professionaldevelopment at underachieving highschools in Los Angeles and OrangeCounty. On another front, theCompton Unified School District has

provided us with funding todesign and deliver theCompton Teachers’ Informa-tion Literacy Institute to helphigh school teachers incor-porate research skills andresources into their curricu-lum. The Libraries also willparticipate with campusacademic departments in theNational Science Foundation-funded FOCUS (FacultyOutreach CollaborationsUniting Scientists, Students,and Schools) grant project, a

CFEP proposal that was awarded$14.5 million to increase the numberof qualified science and math teach-ers over the next five years.

In addition, E&O plans to build uponexisting partnerships with academicdepartments and other campus pro-grams to integrate library resources,information literacy instruction,and information technology intoacademic curricula and specialprograms. We collaborate with the

divisions of Undergraduate Educa-tion and Student Affairs on programssuch as the Student-Parent Orienta-tion Programs, Campuswide HonorsProgram, and the UndergraduateResearch Opportunities Program.We also work closely with NACS tofurther the use of informationtechnology in instruction via ouractive participation in the ElectronicEducation Environment (EEE)Initiative.

University Librarian Gerry Munoffhas appointed three outstandinglibrarians to help lead the UC IrvineLibraries in our quest to provideincreasingly excellent service to ourconstituencies. They join JudyKaufman, Associate University Librar-ian for Administrative Services, incomprising the University Librarian’sExecutive Council.

Carole Kiehl became AssociateUniversity Librarian for TechnicalServices in August 2001. She isresponsible for overseeing fourdepartments: Acquisitions, Catalog,Preservation, and Systems. Carole cameto UC Irvine after 13 yearsat Old Dominion Univer-sity Library in Norfolk,VA, where she was Headof the Department of Bib-liographic Services. Shehas made numerousprofessional and scholarlycontributions, includingpresentations, lectures,consultancies, and publi-cations.

Carole holds a Ph.D. inFrench and a JointHonours M.A. in Political Scienceand French Language and Literaturefrom the University of Glasgow inScotland. She also has a Master’sdegree in Library Science from RobertGordon’s University in Aberdeen anda Certificate in Education from theUniversity of South Alabama. Herdoctoral dissertation, The Theme ofFortune in the Works of Christine dePizan, focuses on the 15th-centuryfigure who is credited by modernfeminist scholars as the writer whoseworks mark the beginning of themodern feminist movement.

Carol Hughes was appointed Associ-ate University Librarian for PublicServices in March 2002. Her PublicServices Division includes numerouslibrary units: Access Services, whichincludes interlibrary loan, circulation,

and document delivery services, re-serve services, the technology labsand study centers in theGateway and Science Li-brary; Reference Services,including electronic ref-erence; Education andOutreach; Current Peri-odicals; the GrunigenMedical Library; andLibrary Publications.

Carol came to UCI with adiverse professional back-ground. Most recently sheworked in the corporatesector at Questia, Inc., as head of

Collections Managementfor a commercial digitizerof scholarly materials forhigher education. Priorto that she was InterimDirector of Research andInformation Services at theUniversity of Iowa, andearlier Assistant to theDirector at the Universityof Michigan Libraries. Shehas made numerousscholarly and professionalcontributions, particularlyin the areas of electronic

books and digital services in academiclibraries.

Carol holds a Ph.D. inInformation from theUniversity of Michigan,an M.B.A. from UCLA,and a Master’s degree inLibrary Science from theUniversity of Illinois,where she also earned aB.A. degree, magna cumlaude, in Latin. Her doc-toral dissertation, ScholarlyProductivity: A StructuralEquation Modeling Analy-sis with Special Attentionto the Role of the Campus InformationEnvironment, was the first attempt touse advanced mathematical meth-ods to analyze the relative roles ofinformation-related factors and

other personal and institutional fac-tors that contribute to faculty

publication.

Lorelei Tanji, who cameto UCI in 1990 as FineArts Librarian, wasappointed Assistant Uni-versity Librarian forCollections in Novem-ber 2002 following anational search. In hernew role she has over-sight of all collectionbuilding for UCI’s three

libraries. She coordinates the activi-ties of the 20 subject bibliographerswho are responsible for liaison tospecific academic units and alsooversees the Department of SpecialCollections and Archives. Given theincredible page of change within thepublishing world, the proliferationof digital library resources, and thepotential for dramatic change inmodes of scholarly communication,building research library collectionshas become an exceedingly complexenterprise. With her experience,enthusiasm, broad knowledge ofUC libraries, and superb leadershipskills, Lorelei is poised to meet thechallenge.

Prior to her arrival atUCI, Lorelei was Refer-ence Librarian at UCRiverside from 1987 to1990. She is a leader ina variety of professionalorganizations, includingthe ARTS Section of theAssociation of Collegeand Research Libraries,the Art Librarians Soci-ety of North America,and the Music LibraryAssociation. Lorelei has

degrees in Music from both UCLAand UC Davis and received her Mas-ter of Library and Information ScienceDegree from UCLA in 1987.

nomena as the regeneration of acomplete animal, asexual reproduc-tion, and the grafting of animal tissue.Perhaps most importantly, Trembleyset a new standard for objectivity andelegance in such studies and for re-peatability in experimentation. Hisdiscoveries created a furor in the uni-versities, academies, and salons ofEurope, where the theological andphilosophical implications werehotly debated. Ellis aquatic single-lens microscope,the forerunner of the modern dissect-ing microscope, the invention ofwhich was indirectly inspired byTrembley’s discoveries on fresh waterhydra.

In donating these items, theLenhoffs expressed theirbelief that the true value ofsuch rarities is in theirpower to bring studentsinto direct contact withthe history of science.Their gifts are renderedeven more appropri-ate by the fact thatscientists at UCI arecurrently leadingan international

effort to sequence thegenome of hydra.
