Evening Option

Peer Coaching Strengthens Leadership SkillsDespite having more than enough on her plate, Vidya Chadaga was determined to
participate in Peers@Haas, the school’s ground-breaking leadership coaching program.
“It is so well-structured that it brings new awareness to everyone who participates.
Having lived in six countries and worked with many different people, I thought I knew
how to adapt and collaborate. Peers@Haas has shown me what I didn’t know about
accepting people for who they are. This was a hard lesson, but an invaluable one.”

Chadaga compares her Haas experience to an Indian dish called “bhel puri,” a combi-
nation of many ingredients and spices. “The blend of core classes and the platter of
electives offered are amazing. There is just so much to digest.” She is focusing on mar-
keting and cites her Haas experience as critical to her move into product management
at Oracle, just three months after starting the program. “Haas really changes the way

Foundation for Leadership
and Innovation
As a Berkeley MBA student, you will be immersed in a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum in which you master the essential skills of management and lead-ership, from accounting and finance to marketing and strategy. You will build a basic framework in qualitative, analytical, strategic, and problem-solving skills.
A cutting-edge, required leadership course will develop your capacity to lead others by giving you an in-depth understanding of your own capabilities, based on 360-degree evaluations from managers, peers, and clients. You will also participate in experiential leadership exercises, read the latest advances on leadership, and discuss cases offered by
top leaders of organizations. By the end of the course, you will develop a custom-ized plan to elevate your own leadership potential by improving such skills as fos-tering creativity and mastering a flexible set of leadership styles.
And when the Leadership course con-cludes, you have the option of joining a structured, peer-coaching program designed to make you an even more effective leader of innovation. Called Peers@Haas and part of the Leading Through Innovation initiative, it starts by identifying one specific behavior that you want to change, and then asks fellow stu-dents and others to judge your progress toward improvement over the next year. “For me, Peers@Haas became a catalyst for putting plans into practice.” says Tejas Saraiya, MBA 08. “The program keeps your motivation level high by creating accountability and showing you that you’re not alone.”
Enriching Your Skill Set
Leading Through Innovation is supported by a series of experiential programs and executive skills seminars. Key among them is Haas@Work, a successful applied innovation program that sends teams of Berkeley MBA students to work with top executives at local firms. In the program, you research a compet-itive challenge posed by the firm and develop potential innovative solutions during a one-day, on-site workshop. Executives select the best solutions, and a core student team is then chosen to implement them. “It was eye-opening to realize that our best ideas emerged not from one individual, but out of the combination of input from everyone on the team,” says Luis Tong, MBA 08, who
participated in a project at a leading online travel firm. “It was a very rewarding teamwork experience.”
A series of optional executive skills seminars also helps you to fine-tune your leadership abilities. Recent speakers have included Srikumar Rao of Columbia University, who taught students how to manage ambiguity and uncertainty and to focus on challenging the status quo in the pursuit of dreams. Marshall Goldsmith, acclaimed author on effec-tive leadership, prepared students to be strong peer coaches in leadership.
Electives Support
Innovative Thinking
The Haas School has long been a leader of innovation, and its culture of indepen-dent thinking and fresh ideas actively supports it. Haas faculty members play a crucial role in creating this environment, which is reflected in their leading-edge elective courses. For example, Senior Lecturer Sara Beckman was one of the first business school faculty members in the world to pioneer the cross-disci-plinary study of product design in an elective. Her courses and others here prompted Businessweek to name Haas as one of the top design schools in the world in October 2006. In Professor Jennifer Aaker’s course, Creativity and Innovation in Marketing, the goal is to enhance the students’ ability to generate creative ideas, and not merely to evaluate ideas of others. Students in the Managing Innovation course draw from economic, organizational, and engineering perspec-tives to identify the sources of innovative ideas inside corporations.

busy professionals. At the time of appli-cation, you select your preference for an evening or a weekend class schedule, which the school is able to give you in most cases. Both schedule options include all required core courses and a selection of pertinent and popular electives. It is also possible to enroll in electives in the other schedule option. Classes are held in the fall and spring semesters, with other activities occurring year round.
Evening Schedule Option
Classes are held Monday through Thursday, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., with a 45-minute break. As a first-year student you attend classes two nights each week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Evening courses are held at the Haas School in Berkeley.
Weekend Schedule Option
Classes are held Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with two 15-minute class breaks and one 60-minute lunch break featuring a catered lunch. Weekend classes alternate between Berkeley and a Silicon Valley location. Easy access from freeways and airports makes the weekend option viable for students who live outside the San Francisco Bay Area.
Top-notch Student Facilities
As an Evening & Weekend MBA student, you are able to take advantage of all student facilities while on the Berkeley campus, including the business and economics library at the Haas School, other campus libraries, the computer center, and the career center. The Program Office is open in the evenings

Making Life Easier
The Evening & Weekend MBA Program has been designed to ease the pressures experienced by fully-employed students upon returning to school. The Haas staff minimizes administrative details and provides services that allow you to focus on earning your MBA:
• All class registration is done through the Evening & Weekend MBA Program Office.
• Books and course materials are given to students on the first day of class. The cost of these materials is included in the program’s tuition.
• For students who must miss a class when away on business, most classes can be videotaped and made available in streaming media for online viewing.
• Students are provided with a Haas e-mail account to facilitate communication with faculty, staff, and other students.
• Free parking is provided for students who drive to campus or the program’s Silicon Valley facility.
• Complimentary shuttle bus service transports evening students from the South Bay and Peninsula.
Laptop Required
To make the most of Haas services and facilities, each student entering the MBA program must have a laptop computer.

Mastering the FundamentalsEven with a solid background in finance, Paul Lee says that, after two years in the Haas
Evening & Weekend MBA Program, he understands concepts at a much deeper level. “My
knowledge base is so much broader. The core classes really rounded out and complemented
my skill set.”
Paul puts his newfound knowledge to work on the job. “I use the skills I learned in
Professor Anderson’s Negotiations class every day with clients and in my personal life.
And now that I’ve taken Behavioral Finance with Professor Odean, I recognize some of the
behavior I’ve seen among clients. Being able to understand these things is really amazing
and immediately relevant.”
Paul’s involvement with the Finance, Marketing, and Consulting Clubs, and his participa-
tion in case competitions, give him other opportunities to put his class work into practice.
“The competitions are fun and exciting. You have to adapt constantly to the team dynamic
and leverage everyone’s strengths and weaknesses.”
That collaborative environment is one of the things Paul likes best about Haas. “We all are
trying to take each other to the next level,” he says.
In his third year, Paul hopes to join the International Business Development program in
Brazil over winter break. “I did a project on Brazil in my first-year Macroeconomics class,”
he recalls. “Being able to go there and see how things work on the ground will really tie it
together. Having the opportunity to do that is a real advantage at Haas.”

Preparing for a Civilian Career“Haas offers everything I need to prepare myself for a business career after the Navy,” says
Melissa Hiler. As a helicopter pilot in the Arabian Gulf, Hiler had to make quick decisions
under pressure for her crew. During the academic year, Hiler teaches future Naval officers
at UC Berkeley, and this summer, she worked as a summer associate in investment bank-
ing at Credit Suisse in New York City.
“It’s great that Evening & Weekend MBA students are able to do summer internships,” she
says. “It is an invaluable opportunity to put what I learned in my finance classes to work
when observing people in real-world trading situations. And I certainly am performing on
the same level as the interns who are in full-time MBA programs.”
She also expects that her internship will influence her choice of electives in her final year
of study. “I’m looking forward to digging into the theoretical side of work that I’ve already
experienced on the job.” Having come to business school with virtually no background
in finance, Hiler considers her success as a summer associate a real indication of how far
she’s come during her time at Haas.

Graduating Evening & Weekend MBA students who have completed the required training and deliverables may participate in On-Campus Recruiting (OCR) for full-time positions. Students in their second year may participate in OCR for summer internships if they are unemployed.

Spotting Legal Issues with a Business EyeAs an attorney for an international pharmaceutical firm, Joi True knows firsthand
that legal and business issues are becoming ever more intertwined. “To do my job as
a lawyer well, I need to understand the business – as well as the legal – issues that
arise in my work.” Her Haas experience is giving her a new set of skills and strategies
for resolving those issues. “When I go to a presentation on Roche’s financial perfor-
mance, I can understand it more deeply, so I’m better at anticipating issues and
asking the right questions.”
True enjoys the collaborative nature of her work with classmates and learns from
exposure to their diverse thinking styles, while she contributes her knowledge of
the law and a legal perspective. “The caliber of students at Haas is its biggest selling
point,” she says. “Their real-life experience helps bring classroom theory alive. They
offer examples of the subjects and problems we are studying and can give practical
advice, often beyond what is contained in the class materials.”
As for juggling life, law, and a new world of numbers, she says, “You just need to
manage your time a little. I ran a marathon during my first year in the program – so it
can be done. You can work, train and get your MBA! ”

In the Berkeley MBA Program, you will experience a rigorous, comprehensive curriculum in which you master the essential skills of management and leadership, from accounting and finance to marketing and strategy. The Berkeley MBA program is for indi-viduals who like to think deeply and expand their understanding of the world. All Haas School courses are rooted in the scientific disciplines of the university – economics, mathematics, social sciences such as psychology and sociology, and other areas. Faculty members who are experts in these fields apply them toward
increasing knowledge of successful man-agement, leadership, human behavior, how organizations work, and how the economy and markets function. As a result, you not only gain knowledge about best business practices, but also learn about the fundamental principles behind them – the “how” and the “why.”
Cohort System Builds
Your Network
Each fall, the program admits four cohorts of approximately 60 students each into the Evening & Weekend MBA Program: two cohorts are made up of eve-ning students and two consist of weekend students. The personal and professional contacts developed within these cohorts become strong networks for your profes-sional life after graduation.
Degree Requirements
The Berkeley MBA degree is awarded to Evening & Weekend students who have maintained a minimum cumula-tive grade point average of 3.0 (B) and completed:• New Student Orientation (required)• The Mid-Program Academic Retreat (1 unit)• Ten required core courses (17 units)• 24 units of elective coursework• A total of 42 semester units of coursework• The writing requirement (demon- strated ability to write effectively in a business setting)
The program is designed to be com-pleted in six semesters (or about 3 years). However, you may complete the program in as few as five semesters, or extend your program beyond six semesters, with approval from the Program Office. Students typically enroll in two courses in each semester.

The core curriculum culminates with an academic retreat where you demon-strate the knowledge acquired in your first year of study and prepare for more in-depth learning in elective courses. The retreat takes place at the midpoint of the second year and is an intense weekend of off-campus team competi-tion and camaraderie.
“I returned charged up for the new classes that would wrap up my second year,” says Gareth Hancock, MBA 06. The weekend is built around a major case study and computer simulation that integrates all of the material from the core courses. Hancock notes, “Two years earlier I wouldn’t have under-stood much from the lectures or how to approach the simulation decisions, but I now had a new way of thinking about business and economics.”
The session is also an opportunity to spend leisure time with classmates in a recreational setting. “With good food, engaging activities, and even a bonfire beach party, we quickly forgot about debt ratios and market shares and just relaxed with great friends,” says Hancock. “There’s no doubt MPAR will remain a highlight in the midst of a challenging and worthwhile Haas education.”

The core curriculum at Haas begins with a new student orientation and concludes with an academic retreat. These required off-campus events use a format that is lively and intense to introduce you to Haas and to prepare you for the next phase of your MBA education.
New Student Orientation
You’ll get to know other new students and gain a sense of what the classroom experience will hold – as well as have fun – at the mandatory weekend orientation for incoming Evening & Weekend MBA students. Held every August near the Berkeley campus, the orientation features team-building exercises and lectures and workshops on special topics.
As an introduction to the case study method that will feature prominently in your coursework at Haas, you will tackle real-life and hypothetical business challenges from various companies. You will also begin to build relationships with your fellow classmates that will

The Core: A Foundation for Leadership
The Berkeley MBA cur-riculum is anchored by ten required core courses that build upon one another and provide the analytical tools and essential knowledge to lead effectively. “The core curriculum has provided me with a whole new lens through which I can view the world,” says Preston Smalley, MBA 08. “As I hear financial news, discuss business strategy, or view team dynamics, I have a whole new set of tools and perspectives which I can use.”
Dion Harris, MBA 07, agrees. “I’ve gained a well-rounded under-standing of key business challenges and solutions that I can apply in my day-to-day course of business.”
As you progress through the core curriculum, you begin to understand how markets work and how to increase organizational effectiveness and motivate a diverse workforce. You gain experience in planning market strategies based on your own analyses of market structure and consumer behavior. You learn to prepare balance sheets and income and cash flow statements and to apply these tools to key financial decisions. And you begin to strengthen your leadership skills.
All ten core courses are taken in the first year. The first two semesters are each divided into half-semesters. Core courses are 1 or 2 units.
Students team up on case studies and enjoy camaraderie at the Mid-Program Academic Retreat (MPAR). Held near Santa Cruz, California, the MPAR weekend is the culmina-tion of core learning and a launch into deeper study through elective coursework.

help eBay move into new markets and improve customers’ experiences.
And when Smalley asked himself what he would need next in his career, he decided on the
Berkeley MBA. “I wanted to learn the skills and strategies I would need to lead a successful
customer-facing technology company or even to found a company of my own someday,”
he says.
Studying at Haas has already helped Smalley’s career by signaling that he is ready and will-
ing to take on more responsibility in his company. “During a recent reorganization, I was
considered for several leadership positions—and, when I got one of those roles, I was well
prepared to take it on,” he says.
“The Haas core curriculum has provided me with a whole new lens through which I can
view the world and is helping me sharpen my focus on innovation and business strategy
so that I can influence those parts of the business that eBay is seeking to grow.” For exam-
ple, in Assistant Professor Waverly Ding’s class on Organizational Behavior, Smalley and
fellow students examined how well eBay’s San Jose and Shanghai offices were working
together. eBay has already implemented the recommendations that emerged from this

The World is the Classroom
The need to think and compete glob-ally has become an imperative. The Haas School prepares you to take an international approach to business through courses, special programs, international travel experiences, club activities, and a research center that focuses on the international business environment.
Travel opportunities include the Seminar in International Business taught by Sebastian Teunissen, execu-tive director of the Haas School’s Clausen Center for International Business and Policy. Seminar students spend one to two weeks delving into contrasting economies overseas and taking in the culture, history, and busi-ness environments of the places they visit.
In 2007, different groups of Evening & Weekend students visited Brazil, Chile, India, China, and South Africa. One group went to Beijing and Shanghai and met with executives from Haidian Science Park (China’s Silicon Valley), the Olympic Games Organizing Committee, various manufacturing companies, and the celebrated Chinese-American restau-rateur George Chen. Another group went to Chile and visited wineries in Santiago, the Banco Central de Chile, Agrosuper Alimenta Rancagua (a major food producer), Codelco El Teniente (the largest underground mine in the world), and went on a side trip to Easter Island.
If you desire a more in-depth inter-national experience, you may spend a semester abroad as an exchange student, choosing from a select list of leading business schools in Europe and Asia.
In addition, the Clausen Center awards fellowships every year for stu-dents to attend the summer Interstate Programme in Brussels, a nonprofit venture that brings together future busi-ness leaders to analyze developments in the European Union and its relations with the United States.
Several student-run clubs focus on international business issues, such as the European Business Club, Latin American and Hispanic Business Association, and the South Asian Business Association. The Berkeley Asia Business Conference looks at business trends affecting technology and trade in the Pacific Rim.

Taking Entrepreneurship to the Next LevelThe sometimes precarious balance of risk and reward inherent in entrepreneurial settings
appeals to Raghu Belur. With two startups to his credit, and extensive academic and pro-
fessional experience in engineering, he knew he needed business management skills to
take his current company to the next level. “Haas is giving me the skills and insights I need
to make the right decisions regarding risks. I use what I learn in class every day on the job,”
he says. “Haas is teaching me to look beyond product development to the broader idea of

Calling his first year of core classes “a total immersion experience,” Belur nonetheless

In recognition of the pervasive impact of technology on business, the Berkeley MBA program emphasizes the study of technology through its curriculum and through a variety of special programs. Popular electives explore technology and its effects, including High Technology Marketing Management, Customer (and Business) Development in High-Tech Enterprise, Biotechnology, and Managing Innovation and Change. Faculty members, such as Professor Henry Chesbrough, who authored two leading books on innovation, are influential researchers in the area of technology and business.

Game Theory Expert Helps Students Hone Strategy SkillsHaas School Professor John Morgan’s course on game
theory offers students a puzzling experience. The
course challenges students to formulate strategy by
learning to forecast the reactions of rivals.
“My teaching style is conversational, exploratory, and
interactive,” says Morgan, whose in-class experiments
call upon students to develop strategies for everyone
from OPEC nations to NBA teams. He has found that
students respond to the interactivity of his classes, as
well as the accountability: Answer a question in class
and a follow-up “Why?” from Morgan is sure to follow.
This enthusiasm for inquiry has led to Morgan’s role as
a founding director of Xlab, UC Berkeley’s laboratory for

To accommodate the schedules of Evening & Weekend MBA students, many activities take place during the eve-ning dinner break or the weekend lunch break so that all students can participate.
MBA Student Groups
The student-run Evening & Weekend MBA Association (EWMBAA) coor-dinates events tailored specifically to evening and weekend students. As your schedule permits, you can also partici-pate in MBA student clubs and com-munity service. Student groups organize major conferences, put together panels of executives on a variety of topics, and assemble ski trips to the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains. Berkeley MBA stu-dents also make a difference in the com-munity through volunteer efforts such as fund-raising and outreach, recognized by the Haas Community Fellows program.
Conferences on Campus
Students host a number of conferences throughout the year, bringing together leading experts to explore everything from digital media and business in Asia to women in leadership. For example, the annual Women in Leadership Conference attracts over 400 partici-pants interested in understanding the wide variety of career options and life-style choices available to women today, through panel discussions, a networking lunch, and professional skills develop-ment workshops.
Haas Lectures and Seminars
Research centers and MBA clubs fre-quently invite corporate executives and other leaders on campus to speak about trends in their industries. These events include the Berkeley Entrepreneurs Forum and other lecture series on topics such as marketing and the management of technology.
Study Tours
Various student groups organize field visits for first-hand experience. For example, the Finance Club visits Wall Street and the Haas Technology Club makes day-long “tech treks” to local com-panies, such as Adobe and Apple. From Technical Success to Taking the HelmEven though he had the tools to become a technical success in Silicon Valley – a bachelor’s
degree in electronics engineering and a master’s degree in computer science – Shantanu
Narayen thought he needed to beef up his business knowledge. “It was clear I needed to
round out some of my entrepreneurial genes with a business education.” So in 1991, the then
Apple Computer Inc. manager decided to attend evening classes to pursue a Berkeley MBA.
Narayen says he learned not only how to apply his engineering knowledge to running a
business, but also savored the interaction with his fellow students and instructors. After
Apple, Narayen served as director of desktop and collaboration products for Silicon
Graphics, then co-founded Pictra Inc., a company that pioneered the concept of digital
photo sharing over the Internet.
Narayen joined Adobe in 1998 as a senior VP of worldwide product research, was later
promoted to executive vice president of worldwide products, and appointed to his current
post in January 2005 at the age of 41. He defines his professional success as being able
to capitalize on the opportunities Adobe provides and says of his Berkeley MBA, “It gives a
very broad perspective on business – and a tremendous amount of confidence.”

Blending Business Experience, Personal PassionsWithin weeks of beginning her Berkeley MBA studies, Brooke Golden launched a new
career with Clif Bar. For Golden, the synergy was ideal. She was building her business skills
while beginning work with a highly successful consumer products company. And, she was
studying at Haas, a school she was drawn to “for its work in corporate social responsibility,”
while working at a company she admired for socially responsible business practices.
“I had worked in advertising, creative services, international marketing, and the nonprofit
sector,” says Golden. “I wanted to thread together all these experiences, develop my
business skills, and explore future career paths. The more research I did, the more Haas
resonated with my career goals, my professional background, and my personal passions.”
Golden applies her expanding business savvy to her role as consumer marketing manager
for LUNA, Clif Bar’s nutrition bar for women, and as director of the company’s LUNAFEST,
a traveling film festival raising money for The Breast Cancer Fund and local nonprofit orga-
nizations supporting women.
How has she managed these multiple responsibilities? Golden credits her courses and her
classmates. “By challenging us to think outside our comfort zones, the Haas curriculum
and learning environment foster creativity and innovation.” She has also found the insights
and camaraderie of her fellow students exceptionally valuable. “There is nothing like shar-
ing this experience with 60 fellow cohort members,” she says. “Working in teams with
people who have such different perspectives, communication styles, and professional
experience is tremendously helpful for problem solving and has made me a better listener,
mediator, and leader.”

Admission Prerequisites
In addition to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, students applying to the Evening & Weekend MBA Program must complete prerequisite courses in college-level mathematics and statistics prior to enroll-ment in the program. These prerequisites can be met through coursework or waiver exams. The college-level mathematics prerequisite can also be waived with a score on the quantitative section of the GMAT of 80th percentile or above. Options for financing your education at Haas include employer tuition support, student loans, the Evening & Weekend MBA Grant, and Evening & Weekend MBA scholarships.

Evening & WeekendMBA Program FeesThe Evening & Weekend MBA Program uses a per-unit pricing structure. A total of 42 units are required to graduate.
Fall 2007 $2,049 per unit
Students enrolled in fall 2007 will pay approximately $15,700 (including additional campus fees) for each of the first two semesters, if campus health insurance is waived.
Fall 2008
Those enrolling in fall 2008 should expect fee increases every year. Students typically register for eight to nine units in each of their first three semesters and six units in each of their three remaining semesters.
Employer Tuition Assistance
Many Evening & Weekend MBA students receive some form of employer tuition support. Applicants are encouraged to contact their human resources depart-ments to determine their eligibility for this type of benefit.
Student Loans
US citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply for Federal Direct Student Loans. Detailed information is available at http://www.ed.gov/ DirectLoan. Applicants begin that pro-cess by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. Graduate students may borrow up to $20,500 annually. Students wanting to borrow more than $20,500 per year may utilize the supplemental loan program. Supplemental loans are also available to international students.

MBA Grant
The Haas School offers a limited amount of grant funding through the Evening & Weekend MBA Grant. The purpose of this grant is to facilitate access to the Berkeley MBA for students whose current employment is in the nonprofit or public service sectors and who demonstrate significant financial need. Grant application materials are provided online and must be filed by April 15, 2008. The FAFSA must be filed by March 3, 2008.

MBA Scholarships
Three scholarships are available for continuing Evening & Weekend MBA students. The Daniel Turner Scholarship is a $5,000 annual award targeted at stu-dents engaged in entrepreneurial ven-tures, specifically those without company affiliations to provide financial support.
The David Engelbrecht Scholarship, a $1,000 annual award funded by a memo-rial gift of friends and family of the class of 2000, is given to a continuing student who has demonstrated academic excel-lence and financial need.
Single parents and individuals returning to the workforce are the intended beneficiaries of the Przybylski Deatrick Scholarship, funded by Steven A. Przybylski, MBA 01, and his wife, Michelle Regalado Deatrick.

Shuttles Ease the Commute
To ease the commute for evening students, the Haas School operates two shuttle buses from the South Bay and Peninsula. The ride gives students additional opportunities to network while going to and from school.
Milind Kulkarni, MBA 08, a product manag-er at Cisco Systems in San Jose, is a shuttle regular. “The shuttle ride is power packed,” says Kulkarni. “It provides a great oppor-tunity to interact and bond with fellow students, catch-up on reading, and work on group projects. I can avoid the rush-hour drive to Haas and sometimes steal a quick nap to help conquer long days.”
