TakeActionforHealthdevelopedtheUbuntuProgramforEmotionalWellnessasaready-to-goprogramforAfricanAmericancommunitygroups.Itisbrokeninto4UbuntuWorkshopsthatcanbeheldseparatelyortogether.Thiseasy-to-useleaderguidewillhelpyoustartaconversationaboutstressandhowitaffectsourdailylives.Itdoesn’tmatterwhatyoureducationalbackgroundis:Youcandothis!Bysimplyfollowingtheinstructions,youcanleadanUbuntuWorkshop.

LeadinganUbuntuWorkshopdoesnotrequirealotofpreparation.Weprovideeasy-to-followinstructions,materials,andgroupactivitiesforeachtopic.Youneverhavetostressoverwhattoteachnext.Asinanything,themoreyoufacilitateUbuntuWorkshops,theeasieritwillbecome.Beopentofacilitatinglotsofworkshops,andsoon,youwillbeplacingyourown“spin”ontopics,makingyourownuniquepresentationevermorerelevantforyourcommunitygroup.

WhatisUbuntu?

Stress—oraswecommonlyrefertoit,“theblues”—iscommontooureverydaylives.Intheseworkshops,weshareourexperiencesthroughanAfricanformofstorytellingcalledUbuntu.ThroughUbuntuwelearnfromeachotherandimprovebothourindividualandcommunitywell-being.

WhatisUbuntu?Ubuntumeans“IamwhatIambecauseofyou.”Thesestoriesandsharedexperiencesofferexplanationsfortheeventsinourlivesthatcancausestress,includingtraumaticeventslikefamilyconflicts,violence,andracism,aswellaseverydaystresses.Thisstorytellingframeworkisusedtoteachcommunitymorality,andprovidepeopleofAfricandescentwithasenseofindividualandcollectiveidentity.HumorisanimportantcomponentofUbuntustories,whichareentertainingaswellasinstructive.

Themaingoalsoftheworkshopsare:

1. Tohelpparticipantsunderstandhowstressaffectsone’scommunity,body,mind,andspirit.Stressistheunderlyingcauseofmanyillnessesandsocialproblems.Aspeoplebecomeawareofhowstresscannegativelyaffectthemandtheoptionsdealingwithit,theycanbegintoleadhealthierandhappierlives.TheseworkshopsfocusspecificattentiontotheuniquestressorsfacedbyAfricanAmericancommunities.

2. ToraiseawarenessthatAfricanAmericansarenotaloneintheirexperiencewithstress.Personalhealthandcommunityhealthareconnected.Theseworkshopsconnectparticipantsbyencouragingparticipantstosharetheirexperiencesandtolearntogetherhowtobetterdealwithstress.

TargetAudience

The4UbuntuWorkshops,whicharedesignedwiththeAfricanAmericancommunityinmind,areforanyonewhomaycurrentlybeexperiencingstressandwhowantstolearnhealthierwaysofdealingwithit.It’salsoforthosewhosimplywantmoreinformationaboutstress.

ClassSize

Becausetheworkshopsrequireaudienceparticipation,werecommendkeepingtheclasssizebetween5-7participantssothateveryonewhowisheshasachancetoshare.
