Overview

The ideal

The more realistic (our goal)

Our group motto“If at first we don’t succeed, redefine success!”

What we will be able to demo

Four sources of second hand information is not better than the original

Ideal

All machines can communicate with one another seamlessly.

All machines can sense our thoughts and are able to download the information we want automatically to our brain.

Obviously, we are not idealistic.

The more realistic

Build infrastructure to allow apps on any device to have access to the user’s info.

Data moves with the user

Users wear small keys/tags/badges to identify themselves

Data possibly cached in these keys/tags/badges for maximum performance.

If at first we don’t succeed…

SpotON not the best choice for location/identity tags

Range and precision limitedNot small, no cachingAlternative was discovered too late

Drop a platform – Palm (unless someone is really bored this weekend)Drop two applications – We’re supposed to get 3rd party vendors anyway ;-)

The Demo

Scenario:User walks up to iPAQ, opens ToDo application. His/her information automatically is loaded. He/she modify the information, goes to the video wall. The changes are displayed there.

All planets must be aligned correctly. Actually WinCE, Windows, and 802.11 on the iPAQ must all work. Don’t know which is harder.

Details – SpotON server

It works fine, but ….Not the best reliability or performance

SpotON tags are a hassle

Only 3 tags available on Demo day No dedicated IP for this right now

Background app to communicate with SpotON server and each application.

Artefacts of demo

Details – Profile Server

Works great

Currently supports Instant Messenger, MemoPad, and ToDo applications

Each application communicates individually with server

Maintains connection during life of app

Details – Applications

All three applications work fine under both WinCE and Win98/2000.

“If it works, don’t push your luck.”

Contact List condition – possible

Resurrecting the Palm platform?Well, it’s hard to resurrect something that never lived in the first place.

Questions?
