Technologic advances---the jet fuel for our specialty

Professionally, this is my favorite time of year. There is a Spring-like renewal at the end of the academic year: we bid farewell to a talented PGY-5’s, as pictured on page one, and take time to celebrate their (unanimous) success at the RCPSC exams. We welcome a new cohort of enthusiastic PGY-1’s into their chosen specialty, and help the PGY-2’s navigate their first year in medical imaging. Our summer BBQ at the iconic Brock House (Sunday July 26th, 6 pm), is our traditional kick-off social event, and with over 100 Residents, Fellows, Faculty and their families, it is a magnificent social occa-sion with an academic ‘family’ feeling.

Of course, our PGY-5 residents are headed off to their fellowships or jobs. We are for-tunate in our specialty to be so constantly challenged by technologic advances. For ex-ample, there was a recent siting of a new CT scanner in Iqaluit on Baffin Island, which itself is not so much of a story. But in this case, the images are transmitted to the larger centre, where the images are read by Radiologists, by satellite. Previously, CD’s were burned, and were sent by cargo plane to the south once a week, resulting in re-port turn-around times of one-two weeks. I recall from my experience as a GP in the Arctic 25 yrs. ago, how much patients benefited from what little technology was availa-ble at that time. Now imaging report TAT’s in Iqaluit are measured in hours, and pa-tients can be selected in a more evidence-based fashion for medivac, each trip of which costs $25,000 or more. A second story featured an I-phone App attached to a hand-held ultrasound unit, allowing transmission of echocardiographic images from the jun-gles of Honduras to academic centres for interpretation. Very cool, but more im-portantly, great advances for patients and pretty cost-effective.

So as you enjoy your summer with your families, start new jobs, begin new programs, or end old ones, technology is in the back-ground, serving as the gas in the engine for our specialty. I am confident that our current cohort of trainees, including Behrang, Kristy, Bippan, Carola, Dave, Madalsa and Steve will be outstanding stewards for new advances, and propel our specialty to even greater heights.

Yours Sincerely,

A Word From the Chairman

Chaired Final Doctoral Examinations between September 2013 and December 2014

Every year, final examinations are held for more than 500 UBC doctoral candidates and each of these examinations involves a faculty member serving in the role of Chair. The Chair of a doctoral examination has an important function; she or he represents the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, ensures the exam is fair and proceeds according to UBC policies, and reports back to us about the proceedings and the Examining Committee’s recommendation. Securing Chairs for doctor-al examinations is a perennial challenge for our office. We understand that there are many competing demands on our faculty members’ time and are grateful to Drs Celler and Coxson who were willing and able to serve in this important

role. (FOM website description)

Society of Interventional Radiology

The Leaders in Innova-tion Award recognizes and pro-motes inno-

vation within interventional radiology, continuing IR’s his-torical innovative development that has revolutionized medicine over the last 40 years.

The Award acknowledges those individuals who have con-ceptualized and implemented an idea that has had an ad-vantageous impact on the practice of interventional radiol-

ogy. The innovation can be a de-vice, technique, approach, clini-cal practice model, or anything having a significant improvement upon the quality of patient care or economics of interventional prac-tice. Congratulations to Dr Lindsay Machan. (SIR website)

UBC scientists help avert a nu-clear medicine meltdown University of British Columbia scientists have

shown that small cyclotrons – particle acceler-

ators the size of an SUV – can replace hulking

nuclear power plants as the country’s main

source of medical isotopes, the radioactive at-

oms used for thousands of diagnostic scan

across Canada each day.

The demonstration last month points the way

to a safer, cleaner, more reliable and cheaper

source of medical isotopes, not just in Canada, but globally. The cyclotron produced

enough isotopes in six hours to enable about 500 scans – beating the previous record

almost four-fold. The quantity would be enough to meet the daily needs of all of British

Columbia’s hospitals.

“With this solution, we’ll be able to make

completely locally-grown isotopes, without

any long-term radioactive waste,” said Dr.

Francois Benard, a professor of radiology and

scientific director of functional imaging at the

BC Cancer Agency. (taken from UBC Media Release | Jan-

uary 8, 2015)

“Dr. Robert Wallace Boyd Research Fund for Young Investigators” exists thanks to Dr. Boyd’s extreme generosity and well respected legacy. “Dr B Forster

Dr Robert Wallace Boyd Dr. Robert Wallace Boyd graduated from McGill University in 1931 and interned at Vancouver General Hospital.

After a Radiology Residency at VGH (1933-35), he worked at VGH as an Assistant Radiologist (1935-37). He moved to Calgary in 1937, where he practiced radiology and radiotherapy at Holy Cross Hospital and at Radium and X-Ray Institute, until 1942.

1942 to 1945, he served as a consultant radiol-ogist, in the Directorate of Medical Services, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps, (Lieutenant Colonel), at National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. He was in charge of radiology training programs in Canada and

went to England to advise on their programs.

In 1946, he returned to VGH as Associate Director of the Radiology Depart-ment, and became Director in 1951, held until 1971. In 1976, he became a

Clinical Associate Professor Emeritus of Diagnos-tic Radiology, UBC.

Dr. Boyd is remembered by all those who have met him as a leader in Radiology and as a quiet and kind individual.

The Robert Wallace Boyd Award winner is based on a resident’s abstract submission.

UBC RADIOLOGY RESEARCH DAY WINNERS

Peter Poon Awards Memorial Research Awards The aim of the award is to encourage original hypothesis-driven research in which residents are the principal investigator or co-investigator. It is anticipated that the funds awarded will be used to off-set the costs for statistical data analysis, laboratory or imaging time, or raw materials used in such endeavors. This is a research-in-progress award. Hypothesis, experi-mental design, and data collection methodology should be clearly stated, but no data need be presented.

UBC VANIER SCHOLARS, UBC’s Faces of Research

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships focus in on graduate students who demon-strate strong leadership skills and high standards of ‘scholarly achievement’ in the hu-manities, social sciences, natural sciences, health or engineering. The eligible candi-dates are nominated by the host university and if chosen, the Vanier CGS offers these top-tier students ‘a significant financial award’ — $50,000 per annum for up to three years — to assist their studies.

Back Row (l-r): Kaylee Byers, Sam Stiegler, Rowan Cockett, Richie Nojang Khatami

Middle Row (l-r) Lindsey Heagy, Jackie Lerner, Jen-nifer Lay, Sab-ine Lague, Da-vid Twa, Kari Grain, Erin Macri, Miriam Matejova

Front Row (l-r) Victor Li, Sahan Ranamukhaar-achchi, Andrea Jones, Crystal Karakochuk, Alessio Gallina, Ron Darvin

Each year, UBC nominates a number of outstanding scholars to the national competi-tion. In 2014, 31 of these gifted UBC graduate students accepted Vanier Scholarships, more than were awarded at any other Canadian university. Beyond the obvious per-sonal benefits of the award for each student, their time as scholars at UBC enriches the campus on all levels. Not only do they contribute to the university’s reputation as a global centre of research excellence but their leadership and influence extends to all students within graduate studies and beyond at UBC. ‘Erin Macri is a Graduate Student at the Centre for Hip Health, and is doing MSK research with the Stand-up MRI unit, under the supervision of Dr. For-ster.’
