Dr Ali Obaid Al-Yabhouni, Chairman, UAESA and Chief Ex- ecutive Officer, Abu Dhabi Nation- al Tanker Company (ADNATCO), says, “UAESA has accomplished some major achievements since it was first established. Initially, it made an important contribution to the review and subsequent amend- ment of the ship registration pro- cedure in the UAE. This improved the administration protocol in ves- sel registry and helped maintain the highest possible standards. Overall, UAESA has played an im- portant role in bridging the gap between the shipping community and the UAE’s maritime authori- ties.” The association was established in 2007 under the initial title of UAE Ship Owners Association. It opened its membership not only to ship owners, but to other shipping companies as well. Soon it was re- named UAE Shipping Association. It holds various seminars, talks and workshops, as a tool to ad- vance the growth of marine knowl- edge and keeps the shipping com- munity updated on the latest developments in shipping regula- tions and emerging technologies. “Through organised seminars and presentations, members are given the opportunity to network with their colleagues, exchange views and opinions and listen to issues of contemporary impor- tance, which affect the maritime community at large. These events also enable members to meet rep- resentatives from government and statutory boards, as well as build business contacts and friendships with people from various sectors of the maritime industry,” Al-Yab- houni notes. UAESA is expected to continue its position as the hub for mean- ingful events and initiatives that promote interest, as well as high- light the value of being a member. The association’s adherence to its objective of facilitating useful and informative activities on shipping matters, is beneficial not only to the members, but to the entire UAE shipping industry. “At the end of the next five years, we would like UAESA to be viewed as a pioneering shipping industry body, geared to assist the development of the shipping in- dustry in the UAE. With shipping being a major industry in the re- gion, the existence of UAESA is extremely important because it unites the major players in the maritime community, in addition to promoting the growth of the UAE shipping sector as a whole,” Al-Yabhouni adds. UAE SHIPPING ASSOCIATION

BLUE Lines Shipping (BLS), established in 2010 as a private sector shipping company, is a young and dynamic company. It owns, operates, manages and charters ships across the world.

BLS owns fi ve MR Tankers and three Aframax tankers, and controls total dead weight tonnage of 500,000 MT in both clean and dirty segments.

Freight matters

The Middle East sea freight industry has grown con-siderably over the last de-cade. Capitalising on this, contracts for new ships

ranging from millions to billions of dollars are being entered into.

The need to establish an associa-tion for the growing community of ship owners in the region was recog-nised. Accordingly, discussions fol-lowed in August 2005 at the request and guidance of DP World and Dubai Maritime City.

The vision of this association is to promote and protect the interests of ship owners and the shipping com-munity of the UAE.

Titled, UAE Ship Owners Associa-tion (UAESOA), it was registered with the Department of Economic Development, with D&K Shipping, Emarat Maritime, Emirates Trading Agency, Transworld Group and Gulf Energy Maritime as the core group. The association was subsequently renamed the UAE Shipping Associa-tion. It was formally launched on May 2007 and attended by ship owners as well as officials from

Dubai Dry Docks, Dubai World, Dubai Maritime City and represen-tatives from major fi nancial institu-tions.
