Division of General Internal Medicine “Training Physicians of the Future”

The core mission of the division is to provide exceptional educational opportunities for medical students and internal medicine residents. The Primary Care residency track, one of the oldest in the country and the Women’s Health track continue to attract highly devoted individuals. Among the ranks, eight have served as Chief Medical Residents and six have additional fellowship training. MEDICAL EDUCATION Faculty has received multiple honors for excellence in teaching each year since 1998. Top medical education leadership positions are held by division members. Inpatient ward attending, over 50 months a

year at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and University Hospital.

Ambulatory morning report. Started over 13 years ago, one-of-a kind in the country.

General internal medicine noon conference (clinical updates, clinical problem solving, clinical pathological conferences, ethics debates, evidence-based medicine). The clinical problem solving presentations illustrate the decision making process by experienced clinicians.

Outpatient teaching venues: resident clinic (Birmingham VAMC, Kirklin Clinic), Emergency Department (BVAMC).

Medical student education: Introduction to Clinical Medicine; Doctor, Patient, and Society; Master Physical Diagnosis; and a variety of other courses.

Patient safety, training residents as teachers, and a recently funded Chief Medical resident in Quality and Patient Safety are also new activities.

Facebook. “Question of the Week” a new activity with a growing number of followers.

SCHOLARSHIP Members perform innovative research aimed at expanding the frontiers of medical education research.

CLINICAL CARE and SERVICE We are committed to provide outstanding clinical service. The faculty practice is located at the Kirklin Clinic. The inpatient clinical service is done with a superb cadre of residents in teaching settings at the three hospitals. Faculty also provides hospitalist services at UAB and at the Birmingham VAMC. Faculty provides direct patient care for some of the most complex patients in Alabama. Faculty are also involved in professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), Association of Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (ACDIM), National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), and the Association of Chiefs and Leaders in GIM (ACLGIM) among others. Enjoy the report!
