Scholars Scrutinize Popular Dake's Bible Questionable reference work ga ins in usage thanks to appropria tion by Word-Fa ith teachers.

Theologians, apologists , ami scholars -" arc taking a stand aga i nst teachi ngs

found i n the Duke's Al l / lOtateel Reference Bihle, which they c la im are aberrat iona l and unorthodox .

Publ ished more than 30 years ago and bi l led as " t he Pentecostal Study Bible ," Dake's has seen an upsurge in populari ty i n recent years , sel l ing more than 30,000 copies in 1 992, perhaps due to i ts embrace by leading Word-Fa i t h

Finis Jennings Dake

teachers such as Kenneth Copeland, Kenneth Hagi n , and Benny Hinn .

The con troversial reference work was wri t ten e n t i rely by Fi nis Dake, who gai ned notoriety in the 1 930s as a flamboyan t pastor, convicted of violat ing the Mann Act i n connect ion with transport ing a mi nor across state l i nes for i mmora l purposes. In prison , Dake reportedly began wri t ing h i s b i b l ical commentary . He died in 1 987 .

Bu t in recent years, the Bible, publ i shed by Dake's descendants i n Lawrencevi l le , Georgia, has come under fire from evangel ica l , Pentecosta l , and African-American leaders who say that some of the author's more than 35 ,000 commen tary notes, taken from his 1 949 book God's Plan for Man , are racist , heretical , and con tradic tory .

Reformed theologian Michael Horton , in h i s book The Agony of Deceit, says Dake's view promoting n i ne persons in the Tri n i ty is heret ica l . "The Fai th teachers borrowi ng from Dake's Al1notated Study Bible deny [the Trin-

so ::f0- '(\ . \ 0) I q q

i ty} ." Horton says Dake's view on the Tri n i ty is s imi lar to Mormon theology .

God's body G . Richard Fisher, in a Persol1al FreedUIll Outreach art ic le , says many of Dake's doctrinal errors are rooted in his m i s i n terpretat ion of a n t h ropomorphism. "Al though Dake wrote of 'symbol i c language : he did not a lways recognize where these th ings apply."

Dake wrote in a note accompanying John 4:24 that God has bodi ly parts such as a heart , hands, mou t h , and tongue, and he wears clothes, eats, and l i ves on a planet cal led Heaven.

Christian Research Institute's Hank Hanegraaff says Dake grossly misunderstands theophany-the temporary manifestat ion of God i n a physical form. " Nowhere does the Bible say that God is forever dependent on a body. Dake's doctrine denies the h i storic Christian chun;:h doctrine that God, in the Trini ty, is one in essence."

Many Word-Fai th teachers subscribe to Dake's view, interpreting that God wears clothes, is about six feet tal l , weighs about ] 90 pounds, and has a hand span of roughly 9V2 i nches.

Dake's grandson and company spokesman Derrick Germaine says nothing is wrong w.i th the teaching. " Does anyone in this carnal mind have any i dea , even from Scripture , that God does not l ive on a material planet ?" Germaine asks. "I can even see Finis Dake's unorthodox view of the Tri n i ty as wel l as the orthodox one, and this is what separates us from everyone else. When i t comes to one of the fi ne-l ine issues in theological di fferences, everyone is en t i t led to their own opin ion ."

Dake's Bible Sales' presiden t , Fi n is Dake, Jr . , agrees: " My father concluded that the Bible was trying to tell us that God does have a body."

Bib l ical scholar Gleason A rcher, though , says that Dake's teachi n g is con trary to Scripture . "He's basica l ly flawed in his approach and has brought i n some stuff you could never get from the Bible." The premise of God having a body is an "aberrat ional absurdi ty," Archer says .

"The bel ief of God having a body is a

c rass , ca rn a l pervers ion a n d a paga n leach ing that bri ngs d i shonor to God . "

There are a l so m a n y see m i ng i nconsistencies in the work . A mong t h e m , Dake asserts i n J o h n 1 0: 2 6 t h a t there are " t h ree t h i ngs men must do to receive cternal l i fe . " Yet in h i s notes on Luke 9 : 2 3 , he l i s ts " seven t h i ngs one must do to be saved : ' and at John 6 :27 he tabula tes " 2 3 con d i t ions of etern a l l i fe ."

Archer asserts that Dake's s tand i s inval i d . " I t cert a i n l y seems to be a fa i th-plus-works propos i t ion . I don ' t recal l anywhere i n Pen t ecos t a l bel iefs that suggests that . It sounds cul t ic , and there is very great cause for alarm . "

George Wood , newly appoi n ted general secretary of the Assembl ies of God , is quick to distance h i msel f and his church from the Dake's B i b l e . " H is opinions are in d irect confl ict with our statement of fundamental truth ."

Strange teachings Fisher cal ls Dake's version " the vacuum cleaner Bible," i ndexing a bizarre col lection of controversial revelat ions, such as Jonah l i teral ly dying inside the whale, the reject ion of " i f it be thy wi l l " prayers such a s is found i n Jesus' Gethsemane prayer, angels rul ing countless planets, resurrected saints giving birth to their own k i n d in heave n , germs closely al l ied wi th demons, the teachi ng that Adam and Eve flew back and forth from the moon , and Christians ' being immune from sickness .

But perhaps Dake's most d iv is ive precept can be found in notes on Acts ] 7 :26, where he promotes racism-giving "30 reasons for segregation ." He states, in part , that all nations wi l l remain segregated from one another in their own parts of heaven, wi l l not be al lowed to worship together, and that God wills al l races to be as he made them, each reproducing after his own kind . " Kind means type and color, or He would have kept them al l a l ike to begin with ," Dake wri tes . "The Bible is against this ."

African-American church leader Mart i n Hawkins of Oak Cl iff Bible Fel lowship in Dal las is distressed about the teaching. "Imagine the Bible stating that heaven is a place where we al l can go, and then being segregated according to race , once we're t here . Sounds l ike there w i l l be an 'other side of the tracks' section in heaven , and tha t 's just too absurd to latch on to."

Wood says, " I suspect that i f anyone is using the Dake's, they merely hunt and peck for what t hey want and, hopeful ly, ignore the rest ."

Questions about Dake The damaging article in your January 10 News section, "Scholars Scrutinize Popular Dake's Bible," is full of untrue statements about what is in the Dake Bible: ( 1 ) Dake's view promotes nine persons in the Trinity; (2) Dake denies the Trinity; (3) Dake's view on the Trinity is similar to Mormon theology; (4) Dake's writings imply "God is always dependent on a body"; (5) Dake's view is that God "is about six feet tall, weighs about 190 pounds, and has a hand span of 9Y2 inches"; (6) Dake rejects "if it be thy will" prayers; (7) Dake teaches that resurrected saints will give birth to their own kind in heaven; (8) Dake says "Adam and Eve flew back and forth from the moon"; (9) The Dake Bible promotes racism. We expect an acknowledgment that such concepts cannot be found in the Dake Bible. Annabeth Dake Germaine, Vice President

Clarification: The article about Finis Dake's writings presented commentary by critics that was based on their interpretations and perceptions of Dake's teachings. The statements in the letter above do not appear in the Dake's Annotated Reference Bible or in his book God's Plan for Man.

For example, Dake nowhere states there are nine persons in the Godhead. He does teach that each member of the "Divine Trinity, " Father, Son. and Holy Spirit, has a "personal spirit body. personal soul, and personal spirit in the same sense that each human being, angel, or any other being has his own body, soul, and spirit. " CT regets any statements that appeared to be textual quotations from Dake's works instead of interpretation by critics. -Eds.

Dake's Bible" presented commentary from critics. The Apri l 4 issue brought needed clarification to ntne. crlJ.¢i,al 'p()int"jJlth,e article ( "Questions about Dake , " p . 1 2 ) . Below are a·ns"Nefs -aoout :dther4a·cets-'ol Dake's life as · Weu: ·as :hi{teachirig . .

Dake was a biblical l iteralist who devoted his l ife to the study of God's Word. He provoked people to think and study Scriptu re for themselves. · He always g ave two or more Scriptures to back h is statements , and made Subjects clear by harmonizing al l related Scriptures . ' God gave him a g ift of quoting Scripture without memorizing it . . ' He never believed his own writings were i nfal l ib le; only that the Word of God was. He did not want simply to fol low traditions of men, but searched di l igently for Bibl ical truth, knowing that the Bible itself must be the final word. He was a col lector of information and l isted things i n great detai l .

In 1 9 3 5 · Dake violated the Mann Act by transporting a minor across a state l ine. One author told us that stories l ike this are what people want · to read. It doesn't matter that it was sixty years ago; that there was no evidence of immorality; that the gir l 's Cathol ic parents were i rate that she attended Rev. Dake's Pentecostal church; that Dake l ived three mi les from the state l ine; or that the town's police, newspaper, and industries were control led by people who disl iked Pentecostals, especially Finis Dake. - Thus the stage was set for the event which plagued him and his ministry the rest of his l ife .

This event haunts his chi ldre n and g randchi ldren to this day. People talk about it and writers add it to their message , u lt imately branding it as his most notable accompl ishment. But we know that God has forgotten it, grace has coverd it, and there will come a day when we will hear of it no more.

Dake spent six months in ja i l , but he beg an his notes on the Bible before this and did not finish unti l twenty-five years later.

Some have labeled Dake a racist. Those who really study his notes (not just the headings) know this is not true. Notes on Col. 3 : 1 1 - 1 2 state that "as a new creation in Christ there is no ' distinction made in rights and privileges because of race, sex, color, or position in life ." Racism has to do with belief in the superiority of one race over another. As a new convert, Dake often attended an African-American church and was baptized there. Throughout the years, African-Americans attended his church as well .

Page 1 59 of the Dake New Testament l ists "30 Reasons Nations Separated, " but this relates primari ly to the nation of Israel. In 1 9 90 the wording of the title and selected notes was changed to remove u n n ecessary offense.

Point #2 1 states that "al l nations wi l l remain separated on earth forever" (Acts 1 7 : 2 6 ) . Some have substituted the word " heave n " for "earth , " g iving an entirely different meaning. There is no reference to people being segregated in heaven .

Point #2 3 states that " i n heaven certain g roups will not worship together," but this is not a racial issue . Rev. 7 : 9 - 1 7 and 1 5 : 2-4 refer to tribulation sints of all nations, kindreds and tongues, worshipping God and singing the song of Moses and of the Lamb. Rev. 1 4: 1 -5 refers to the 1 44,000 that sing a song that no one can learn.

As Melanchthon said, " In necessary things , u nity; i n doubtful things, l iberty; in al l things, charity. " We pray that those who have a heart for God wil l hunger and search di l igently for the truth. If you have any questions about Dake's writings, please call 1 -800-24 1 -1 2 3 9 . -
