PERSPECTIVES

Planting seeds of kindnessDespite every major religion having love

as a universal principle, there have been casesof mass genocide and brutal war in this worldstemming from personal hatred or nationalinterests, proving the “survival of the fittesttheory” of evolution, which says that humansare driven to compete for existence selfishly.

If there had been less cruelty, there wouldnot have been so many human tragedies.Nonetheless, still we can build the world tobe much more beautiful if only everyone isjust a little kinder and sympathetic towardseach other. Humans are humans everywhereunder the sun. They are selfish, self-centeredbut kind and helpful at the same time.

Helping others is its own reward. Kind-ness can help regulate emotions, which haspositive impact on our health. Studies showthat kindness can make us happier and it isdifficult to be angry, resentful, of fearful whenone is showing unselfish love towards anotherperson. I do not mean kindness as large cashcontribution, offering your seat on bus ortrain to someone weaker or older, and givinga lift to school children waiting bus, are alsoacts of kindness.

We can train ourselves to be kinder bydoing acts of kindness on a regular basis. Wehave an in-built capacity to help others, espe-cially those close to us. But, how about to thecomplete strangers? There is a phenomenaknown as “bystander effect” which explainswhen someone needs help in a public place, they are less likely to receive if there are morepeople around because everyone in the crowdassumes someone else will take responsibil-ity. But, be never hesitant to act from thegoodness of your heart as kindness you haveshown to someone, can make a difference, however small, in his life.

However, kindness has to begin withinourselves. The more altruists in a society, themore peaceful and prosperous it becomes asaltruists cooperate and contribute to thewellbeing of fellow group members. Let’sshare a seat under the shade of tree grownfrom the seeds of kindness.

The two planets are visible every nightat twilight. Venus is brighter because of itsrelative closeness, compared with super-far-away Jupiter.

Even though the gap will widen, theplanets will appear remarkably close allweek and be easily visible the rest of thismonth. So says astronomer Tony Phillips, author of the spaceweather.com website.Grab a small telescope, and you can alsocatch Jupiter’s four largest moons.

Astronomers consider it the best eveningtag-up of Venus and Jupiter in years. In July,early-risers will be treated to a similarspectacle, in the eastern sky at daybreak.Phillips says throw in the crescent moon, andit “will be worth waking up for.”

Drug may reduce subconscious racismThe study published in Psychopharmacology found the

propranolol group scored significantly lower on the ImplicitAttitude Test into subconscious racial bias — a standard testfor testing subconscious racial attitudes.

Propranolol blocks activation in the peripheral“autonomic” nervous system and in the area of the brainimplicated in fear or emotional responses, Terbeck said.

The researchers said they think propranolol reducedimplicit racial basis because such bias is based on automatic,non-conscious fear responses, which propranolol blocks,Terbeck explained. Study co-author Julian Savulescu saidthis research raises the tantalizing possibility that unconsciousracial attitudes could be modulated using drugs, a possibilitythat requires careful ethical analysis. “Biological researchaiming to make people morally better has a dark history,”Savulescu said in a statement.

HONG KONG, 15 March—China Mobile <0941.HK>,the world’s biggest wireless carrier by number of subscribers, met expectations by posting a 4.6 percent rise in fourth-quarter net profit on Thursday as higher mobile data usageoffset some of the impact of hefty handset subsidies.

The carrier, which has a market value of about $218billion and competes with smaller rivals China Unicom<0762.HK> and China Telecom Corp <0728.HK>, could seegrowth accelerate later this year if it succeeds in sealing a dealwith Apple Inc to offer the iPhone. China Mobile has beentrying to boost the average rates users pay in the world’s largestmobile phone market, where barely 15 percent of the 988million subscribers - and soon to hit 1 billion - are 3G users.

THE NEW LIGHT OF MYANMAR Friday, 16 March, 2012 7

NAY PYI TAW, 15 March—Chairman of Myanmar National Congress Party U Kaung Myint Htut presented party’s policy, stance and work programmes through radio andTV on 15 March evening.

The translation of his presentation is as follows:-

Esteemed Myanmar people,First and foremost, I would like to say that it is a great

pleasure for me to give talks to all Myanmar people whenMyanmar political lanscape is achieving progress openly.

We are of Myanmar National Congress Party. We steadfastly joined the politics together with the

people through thick and thin during the period ofMyanmar political crisis.

We firmly believe that politicians and political partieswill properly lead the nation through the way of electionacross the world.

Our Myanmar National Congress Party opposestaking the State power through various ways and meansbut not applying the election on a basis of public desire.

It was not easy to turn out the politicians desired bythe nation through the way of election.

The people knew that the way of election was attackedand criticized for several times.

The people who hoped for a change of paradigm wereindecisive whose guidelines were correct or incorrect.

Many criticism and blames were put on the Tatmadawfor its rights to participate in various Hluttaws in line withthe constitution.

Our party has been making vigorous efforts foremergence of a stable political situation in Myanmar welove for many years before getting the permission forestablishment of our party.

Why do we prefer all the Myanmar people to deeplyabide by the constitution?

I would like to explain a little how we would like toachieve success in way of election.

Our point of view on present political situation is asfollows:-

(1) Only upholding national interest is appropriatefor Myanmar people.

(2) All the persons residing in Myanmar are Myanmarcitizens. So, disputes and hostilities among theMyanmar people based on any organization, politics and religions will not come out any goodresult.

(3) The Myanmar Tatmadaw is a part of strongnational cause in the nation. The Tatmadaw hasreally cultured the spirit to safeguard the country. Therefore, it needs to place the role of the

Tatmadaw in the constitution of Myanmar whichis now on the threshold of democratization process.

(4) Myanmar people have least experience in theelection through democratic process. Thus, thepeople need to take care of avoiding somepoliticians who would show off their heroicactivities with bad manner in coming by-electionwithout any sacrifice for the people. You allshould beware of their heroic activities forpolitical exploitation without any sacrifice forthe people.

(5) At last, I would like to say that Myanmar democracyissue is national concern. Any person should nottarnish the future political situation of Myanmarwith personal grudges. It is important that everyMyanmar people needs to adore the land ofMyanmar in which they reside. So, the people areto turn out the politicians who can really serve theState interest so as to enable the Republic of theUnion of Myanmar to stand tall among the globalcountries prestigiously.

To do so, the people need to carefully elect thepoliticians who dare sacrifice their self-interest in makingmanagement for the sovereignty of the nation wheneverthey talk about righteous matters and do righteous issuesfor the sake of the people.Esteemed Myanmar people,

We, the Myanmar National Congress Party, aresteadfastly talking about that only when will the way ofelection will be the single solution for Myanmar politicalsituation to be able to elect them.

I would like to show off my heartfelt expression for theopportunity on presentation of Myanmar National CongressParty to the people through State-owned radio and TV.

Our party would not apply such opportunity incanvassing for the by-election.

Only when all the citizens have capabilities to buildthe nation with awareness of national cause, will the nationdevelop.

In coming by-election, the people will have theopportunity to select the organizations and persons of theirchoice.

We will satisfy if the people recognize us for our years-long sacrifices to receive the right of selection.

It is democracy the people long for.Esteemed Myanmar people,

Myanmar National Congress Party has striven fortaking part in vacant constituencies in MingalaTaungnyunt, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) and Mayangontownships in coming by-election.

We would like to urge you if you do not like MyanmarNational Congress Party, you should not vote for us.Indeed, Myanmar National Congress Party is not a granderpolitical party. Policies and presentation of us are writtenin similar to that of other political parties. MyanmarNational Congress Party has not possessed the strong

Congress Party like the majority of Myanmar peopleaspires to ensuring peace and stability of the nationwhoever candidate becomes Hluttaw representative. Wewish convenience and security of the people in basicneeds whoever candidate becomes Hluttawrepresentatives. Moreover, we all will steadfastly involvein politics whoever candidate becomes Hluttawrepresentative.

Members of Myanmar National Congress Party admirethe good political leaders for their best qualificationssuch as honesty, courage, sacrifice and accountability. We believe that the majority of the people will accept thesimilar concept.Esteemed Myanmar people,

Myanmar National Congress Party is only tree grower. We all take pleasure to see you plucking fruit and flowersas you like.Esteemed Myanmar people,

I would like to present the most important and finalpoint to the esteemed people throughout the nationincluding Mingala Taungnyunt, Dagon Myothit(Seikkan) and Mayangon townships. You all should notblindly believe our presentation. You safeguardsdemocracy of Myanmar in its infancy. We would like tourge you to take out the responsibility of the people in thecoming by-election after considering all things, assessingthe issues based on your own experiences and reviewingyour real situations. Our Myanmar National CongressParty will try our best to be oneness with the people inrealizing the present political situation with full essenceso as to totally cease the internal strife, to achieve successin national interest without putting reliance on othercountries and securing greater progress in political, economic, education and health infrastructures of theMyanmar and its people in the world political arena.Esteemed Myanmar people,

In conclusion I would like to say that whoever winsthe elections, only the all-inclusiveness of Myanmarnational forces can be said the true victory of democracy.

May the entire Myanmar people including those ofMingala Taungnyunt, Dagon Myothit (Seikkan) andMayangon townships always have good fortunes.

May they be physical and mental well-being for thefuture of Myanmar.

financial situation.Myanmar NationalCongress Party is not famousamong the people. Therefore, if those whoprefer these things, theyshould not vote forMyanmar NationalCongress Party.Esteemed Myanmarpeople,

Ronaldo doubledMadrid’s lead 10 minutes intothe second half as he shot from30 metres and CSKAgoalkeeper Sergie Chep-chugov made a horrible messof it, allowing it to bounceinto the back of the net whenhe really should have made asave.

Karim Benzema replacedHiguain with 21 minutesremaining and wasted no timein staking his claim to a firstteam place by scoring the thirdgoal a minute later. Age of warningsatellite causes

concernWASHINGTON, 15

March—A US satellitegiving the only advancewarning of incoming high-energy solar particles isgetting old and is possiblyon its last legs, researcherssay.

But a replacement forNASA’s AdvancedComposition Explorer, orACE, satellite is at least twoyears away, they said.

ACE provides theonly advance notice ofincoming high-energyparticles from the sun whichcan wreak havoc onindispensable radio, GPSand satellite commu-nications, researchers said.

Launched in 1997,ACE gives the NationalOceanographic andAtmospheric Admini-stration’s space weatherforecasting arm advancenotice if a storm is headedtoward Earth, as it did withthe solar storm that left thesun Tuesday.

How much longer thesatellite can keep workingis a concern, scientists said.

“It would be a very badday for us if that spacecraftwas not working,” WilliamMurtagh, programmecoordinator for NOAA’sSpace Weather PredictionCenter in Boulder, Colo, told Discovery News.

“When an eruptionoccurs on the sun, there arestill quite a few questionmarks as to if it’s going to

hit the Earth and when it’sgoing to hit the Earth,” hesaid.

From about 1 millionmiles away, ACE providesthe only early warning ofwhat’s headed toward Earthand utility operators, airlines, satellite owners,GPS users and othersdepend on space weatheralerts from NOAA.

“ACE is a single pointof failure and it’s old,”Murtagh said. “Every time Ihave a space weather stormI cringe a little bit that ourvery own space weathersatellite doesn’t succumb tothe storms I’m relying on itto help forecast.”
