24 INDEX OF GRADUATE PROGRAMS

We acknowledge that the University of Guelph resides on the ancestral lands of the Attawandaron people and the treaty lands and territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit. We recognize the significance of the Dish with One Spoon Covenant to this land and offer our respect to our Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Métis neighbours as we strive to strengthen our relationships with them.

I am delighted that you have taken a moment to explore graduate studies at the University of Guelph. As you will see in these pages, we offer over 100 graduate programs across the University’s seven colleges through which you can work with internationally recognized faculty to prepare yourself for academic and professional careers, and, within our thesis-based programs, advance knowledge for the benefit of all.Graduate studies are special. As compared to your undergraduate studies, most graduate programs require you to take ownership of your studies be it in defining a pertinent research question, completing a workshop to add a complementary professional skill to your repertoire, completing an industry internship, or co-authoring an academic paper for Nature or Science. Further, your studies will involve more than textbook learning and lecture halls. Our graduate students commonly work in research labs, complete studio art, guide undergraduate labs or seminars, and undertake field work in sometimes exotic places.Indeed, this picture was taken by one of my own graduate students on the Monarch Mountain Trail outside Atlin, BC. I was there to set her up for a field season working with the Taku River Tlingit First Nation. Most of the time, I wear a suit and sit in meetings. Graduate studies can take you away from all that.

WHAT PATH WILL YOU TAKE?

Dr. Ben Bradshaw Assistant Vice-President (Graduate Studies)

U of G Scholarships and Funding

graduatestudies.uoguelph.ca/current/funding

Each year, the University of Guelph invests millions of dollars into

thesis-based graduate students and the research they are pursuing.

The University wants to ensure that these students can dedicate

themselves to the successful completion of their graduate programs.

Funding packages for eligible students are determined within their

graduate departments, with some departments routinely committing

to $24,500 per year for three or four years for PhD students and others

offering packages closer to the institutional minimum of $21,000 per year.

Packages may be made up of a number of components, such as:

• Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs);

• Graduate Research Assistantships (GRAs)/Graduate

Service Assistantships (GSAs); and

• Scholarships (external and/or internal).

Ultimately, the amount of funding secured by

graduate students is commonly higher

than the amounts committed to in their

offers of admission, as there are

many opportunities for additional

awards, research stipends and

employment income.

In 2018/19, graduate students at the University of Guelph secured $19.9 million in scholarships and bursaries, including $4.8M from external agencies.

In addition, the University provided $33.5 million to Graduate students in the form of GTAs, GRAs and GSAs, bringing total graduate student support in 2018/19 to $53.4M.

There are 3035 grad students currently enrolled in 103 graduate programs.

GUELPH

I chose U of G because it is known as one of the best universities in agricultural research with equipment and facilities which will enable me to accomplish my goals and academic ideas

What they say is true, Canadians really are nice people!

I like the fact that Guelph is a livable city with a small town community feel. Also, Toronto is just an hour-bus-drive away!

A great university within a great city.Welcome to Guelph, one of Ontario’s fastest growing, best-run cities. Our 350 hectare, award-winning campus becomes your home when you enroll at the University of Guelph. The local lifestyle is progressive, as is the local economy. With a population of over 133,000, the city boasts urban amenities and yet provides the welcome of a smaller town. There is an extensive transit system to move you around, and the city is a stone’s throw away from other major municipalities like Toronto, Kitchener, Waterloo and Hamilton. The architecture is rich, the legacy is strong, and the community is connected. Alumni agree, the city’s warm embrace and the relationships you generate here will stick with you long after you leave.
