UCC Joint Worship
Do Thoughts and Prayers Matter: A Muslim Perspective
July 28, 10 a.m., Park Hill UCC
As has been the tradition for many years, the last Sunday in
July, July 28, UCC churches across the metro area close our
individual doors for one Sunday and gather together for a joint
worship service as a reminder that we are ultimately one
church as Jesus prayed that we all would be one. This year we
will gather at Park Hill United Church of Christ at 2600 Leyden
St. Join us as the gathered church asks the hard questions of
the role of prayer that we are wrestling with together as well
as inviting Muslim siblings to share their view on the role of
prayer in our broken world.
THERE WILL BE NO WORSHIP AT THE KIRK JULY 28.

Worship in July
July 7: River Flows, Ezekiel 47:1-22
Special Music by Matt Kingham
July 14: Overflow, Psalm 23, Psalm 65
July 21: Betsy Vaninetti preaching on Amos 5:18-24
July 28: Joint UCC Worship at Park Hill UCC, 10 a.m.
Throughout the summer we will follow the river of life throughout the Bible from Genesis through
Revelation. Water is a rich and powerful symbol that not only sustains life but holds great power to heal and
destroy. Be a part of our summer series as we gather down by the riverside to be refreshed and renewed.
Fall Seasonal Group
It is time to start making plans for the life of the church this fall! If you are interested in being a part of our fall
seasonal group, we will meet four times to plan the fall season and then implement our grand ideas between
Sept. and November. No matter your experience, all are welcome to participate! Over 30 members have par-
ticipated in at least one seasonal group in the life of the church. It is a short commitment but a great way to
bring your voice, your questions and creativity into the life of the Kirk!

Kirk Camp
Registration is due July 15 for our 4th Annual Kirk Camp but the first one at La Foret! Water provides for us what we need: for some it is a cool cup of water to nourish us on a hot day. For some it is a place of play. For some it is cleansing. Some float on the surface or listen to its sound for peace. Some wonder at what is below the surface.
Whatever it is that you need, that you are thirsty for, you are invited to join the Kirk Community for a weekend retreat for all ages. August 2-4. Register here.
Church Camp! And Kirk Camp!
Our mission statement calls on us to “pursue depth in relationship with God, the Earth and each other.”
There is no better way and place to do that then at La Foret!
UCC Church Camp
12 of our children will be attending a week long church camp
July 7-13. One way to show support is to send them a letter to let
them know you are thinking of them and praying for them during
their time with God in God’s creation.
Send them to:

Kirk Women’s Retreat: By Way of the Heart; September 21-22, Granby
All those who identify as women of the Kirk are invited to a time of
poetry, art, conversation, good food, games, nature, friendship and more.
For the past three years we have gathered for to be enriched by the
Spirit, by time away, and by one another. We will depart from the Kirk at
8 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 21 and return home Sunday afternoon. The cost of
this event is $60 for food and lodging and materials. Registration will go
live on our website later this month.
The poet Jan Richardson’s words will guide us once again as we, wise
women gather. As she writes just to us and far beyond us:
Wise women also came,
and they went,
as wise women always do,
home a different way.
Theology on Tap, July 14
This month as we gather for our monthly conversation we will
be discussing moral theology or Christian Ethics. How does our
faith impact how we live; also known as how we make decisions
and weigh competing alliances? Is there a Christian Ethic that is
agreed upon for those who follow Jesus? Should there be? Join
us at Brightmarten located at 730 South University on Sunday,
July 14 from 4-6 p.m. for a casual conversation and community.
Food Trucks
July 9, 5:30-8 p.m.: Community Table and Denver Public Library Booth
July 23, 5:30-8 p.m.: Movie Night in the Community Room
If you are able to come early on July 9 to set-up or take down the tables and
chairs, please let Selena know. We hope all of the Kirk will join us as we build
community with each other and our neighbors. (Didn’t Jesus say something
about neighbors?!) Oh yes, lets love our neighbors together!
*Thanks to Diane and Joe Berry and Ellen and Rusty Campos for selling
beer and wine at these events!!!

Dear Kirk,
I am not really a twitter person. I do my best to keep up with friends, family and many of you on Facebook
but find that overwhelming enough and so have kept my distance from other forms of social media. Except
during conferences. I have found the twitter captures the wisdom and helps connect people who are actually
gathered in one space and shares some of that experience beyond themselves. As I write this the UCC
General Synod is taking place in Milwaukee, WI and I have tried to follow along on twitter to see the
highlights of this meeting. And so I wanted to use this space in the newsletter to share with you some insights
into the movements of our larger church body:
John Dorhauer using female pronouns to talk about god is important NOT bc god is a woman (god can’t be confined to any binary or singular gender) but bc it gives people pause & flips the patriarchal script that so many have been taught #UCCSynod
#UCCSynod Business Update: Committee 15 Resolution "Let Justice Roll Down–Declaring Support For the Green New Deal and Affirming the Intersectionality of Climate Justice with All Justice Issues" PASSED
I remember 2 synods ago when delegates on the floor repeatedly asked to be recognized with non-binary language, and what a challenge that was. Now we are changing our legal documents, that define who we are, to include non-binary language. Amazing. #UCCSynod
#UCCSynod Business Update: Committee 9 Resolution "Supporting Survivors Of Rape And Sexual Violence Through An Ongoing Church-wide Observance Of Break The Silence Sunday (BTSS)" PASSED.
“Don’t be a hater, love your neighbor!” Great chants from the hundreds of @UnitedChurch
delegates marching now on the Milwaukee ICE office
Our church believes God is still speaking and we as a church are listening and working to respond. We at the
Kirk are not bound to any resolutions through contract but by covenant. As a congregational church we must
hear the movements of the larger church and discern how we are called to respond in our context and com-
munity.
I will leave you with my favorite of the tweets quoting a sermon preached at synod:
It doesn’t matter how wide you go if you don’t go deep. You’ll just be big and shallow.
@pastortraci #UCCSynod
We at the Kirk are pursuing depth. May it be so with the UCC and the church universal.
