USGS Columbia Environmental Research Center (CERC) 4200 New Haven Road, Columbia, MO. 65201 Supervisors: David Alvarez 573-876-2970, Carl Orazio 573-876-1 823 August 1986 to present; 40 hours per Week Physical Science Technician GS-9

I conduct research tasks and provide technical support for CERCIS Passive Sampling Section’s research which is part of the Environmental Chemistry Branch. I am an expert on the fabrication and analysis of Semipermeable Membrane Devices (SPMDs) and POCIS which are passive samplers used worldwide for trace organic contaminants research.

I have a very wide range of knowledge, skills, and experience in the analysis of environmental samples (e.g., water, sediment, and tissues) and passive sampling devices such as SPMDs and POCIS, for a broad array of chemicals, including toxic ana radioactive corn pou nd s .

As part of my work, I have been a frequent user of wide variety of low level beta and gamma radioactive compounds for over 25 years. Carbon-I 4, Tritium-3, Selenium-75, Lead-21 0, and Cadmium-209 radioisotopes attached to organic and inorganic compounds: I have used these radioisotopes in research studies which included preparing standards, measuring amounts with gamma and scintillation counter, monitoring work sites with GM detectors, and disposing of waste.

Also I have been on CERC’s safety committee for about 20 years. Most of that time, I have served on the radiation safety subcommittee and have been the assistant Radiation Safety Officer to three Radiation Safety Officers.

I help designed and implemented that radioisotope tracking system that CERC uses to tract radioisotope use. I maintain the tracking system for radioisotope use and generate

reports to the Radiation Safety Officer on Quarterly and Yearly radiation usage and inventory at CERC.

I have helped the Radiation Safety Officer prepare radioactive waste for disposal and written SOPS for radiation usage at CERC.

Annually I have taken the required radiation training conducted at CERC by the University of Missouri Radiation Safety Program.

Over the years I have taken most of the DO1 online courses on radiation safety to include:

Safety: General Licensed Radioactive Materials 2007 Ionizing Radiation Safety 2007 Naturally Occurring Radiation 2007 USGS Safety Program Requirements 2005 USGS Safety and Occupational Health Program Overview 2005 & 201 0 USGS Industrial Hygiene Program 2005 DO1 Safety and Occupational Health Overview 2005 & 201 0 Safety: USGS Introduction to the Safe Behavior Process 201 0 Safety: USGS Safety Program Requirements 201 0 Safety: Resources, References, and Standards 201 0 DOT Hazardous Materials Table 2010 Safety: DOT Packaging 2010 Safety: DOT Placarding 201 0 Safety: DOT Hazmat Marking and Labeling 2010 Safety: DOT Hazmat Transportation Security Awareness 201 0 Safety: DOT Shipping Papers 2010 Safety: DOT Carrier Requirements (Air) 201 0 Safety: DOT Carrier Requirements (Highway) 201 0 Safety: DOT Carrier Requirements (Rail) 201 0 Safety: DOT Carrier Requirements (Water) 201 0

For the past four months I have been the assistant to the acting Safety Officer (Carl Orazio) at CERC and have taken many of responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Officer because of the ill health of our Safety Officer and Radiation Safety Officer Paul Heine.

Paul Heine will still be employed at CERC until December 31.

I have been selected by USGS as the new RSO for CERC-USGS taking effect on January 1,201 1.
