Types of SentencesSimpleCompoundComplex

Simple SentencesA simple sentence is one independent clause.

It expresses a complete thought.

It has one subject and one verb.

Simple SentencesExamples:Hasimahs sweater is red.You need to be quiet.Ms. Salmah did a cartwheel.The boy ate pizza.I play soccer.Homework is boring.She likes burger.School is fun.

Compound SentencesA compound sentence is a sentence with 2 or more independent clauses joined by a comma and a coordinating conjunction.

It will have 2 simple subjects and 2 simple predicates.Compound SentencesExamples:

(Mail planned to go to the hockey game), but (he couldnt get tickets.)

(Andre loves monkeys), but (he also likes cats.)

Coordinating ConjunctionsCoordinating Conjunctions are used to join together 2 independent clauses.

Complex SentencesA complex sentence is one independent clause plus one dependent clause.

Each clause has its own subject and verb, but the dependent clause cant stand alone.

The two clauses are joined by a subordinating conjunction.

Complex SentencesExamples:When Alif was little, he did very weird things.

Ava stands at the bottom of the cliff while the climber moves up the rock.
