While technology changes at a rapid pace, so do internet connections . The type of internet connection will determine how much time is spent for uploading or downloading i.e internet access speed . Different types of internet connections are compared according to their speed, cost and availability.

• Once the most standard form of internet. • Uses telephone lines by the

connection taking over the wire preventing one from making calls.

DIAL UP

Page 6: Types of internet connections

Speed -The common speeds were 14.4 kbps,28.8 kbps & 33.6 kbps & currently the fastest speed is 56 kbpsCost-Around 20$ per monthAvailability-Available almost everywhere in the country

ISDN•Integrated Service Digital Network.•Uses full digital signals over copper phone wire• Allows simultaneous voice and data communication• Provides 2-3 times the performance of dial up•Offers 2 types of rates

Basic Rate InterfacePrimary Rate Interface

Page 8: Types of internet connections

Speed -ISDN offers connections ranging from 64 Kbps to 128 KbpsCost-typically cost $250 to $500Availability-Isn’t available everywhere-More common in metropolitan area

DSL•One of the most commonly used internet connection.•Provides fast internet using phone line•Connection can be shared using wired or wireless•Main categories are:ADSLVDSLSDSL

Page 10: Types of internet connections

Speed -Downstream Rate-1.5 to 9 Mbps-Upstream Rate-16 to 640 kbpsCost-200$ to 300$-installation cost varyAvailability-some signal limitations

ADSL

SDSLSpeed-upto 3MbpsCost-200$ to 300$-installation cost varyAvailability-signals carried lose power as they travel

VDSL•Offers fast data rates over relatively short distance•Speed-52 mbits per second-16 mbits per second•Capable of supporting applications such as high definition T.V

Page 13: Types of internet connections

CABLE•A form of broadband internet connection• works by using TV channel space for data transmission•cable modem can be used to achieve extremely fast access.

Page 14: Types of internet connections

Speedpractically deliver 1 Mbps to 10 Mbps for downloading and 200 Kbps to2Mbps for uploading.Cost-Installation costs $100 or more-Monthly fees are between $40 to $60AvailabilityCable access has no such restriction as limitation of distance for DSL

WIRELESS•wireless broadband is one of the newest Internet connection types•provides an always-on connection which can be accessed from anywhere• difficult to find a wireless service provider in some areas•typically more expensive•mainly available in metropolitan areas.

LEASED LINES•A leased line is a telephone line that is rented directly form the telephone company•sometimes referred to as direct connections to the Internet

Page 17: Types of internet connections

Batch no-154

T1•popular leased line option for:-businesses connecting to the Internet -Internet Service Providers (ISPs) connecting to the Internet backbone• consists of 24 individual channels

Page 18: Types of internet connections

Batch no-154

Speed-each channel supports 64 Kbps upto 1.544 mbpsCost-Since the cost runs between hundreds and thousands of dollars per month T1 lines are not viable for home and small-business usersAvailability-Users should contact their local telephone companies about obtaining aleased line.

Page 19: Types of internet connections

T3•T-3 lines are dedicated phone connections•T-3 line actually consists of 672 individual channels• used mainly by Internet Service Providers (ISPs)

Page 20: Types of internet connections

Batch no-154

Speed-supports speeds ranging from 43 to 45 Mbps.Cost-Prices vary according to location, connection demands and other factors.Availability-Users should contact their local telephone companies about obtaining T3

Page 21: Types of internet connections

OC3-OPTICAL CARRIER•It is used to specify the speed of fiber optic networks conforming to the SONET standard•typically used as a fiber optic backbone for large networks with large voice, data, video, and traffic needs•typically used as a fiber optic backbone for large networks with large voice, data, video etc

SATELLITE• This technology is a method by which Internet content is downloaded to a satellite dish and then transmitted directly from the dish to the user’s PC• satellite technology is not faced with the problem of pulling wire through the desert and over mountains unlike cable and telephone

Page 23: Types of internet connections

Batch no-154

Speed-Download speeds are typically about 600 kbpsCostthe cost is around $40 to $ 70 per monthAvailabilityexpect that in 3-4 years, the network of satellites will include nearly the entire Earth covering 95% of its landmass.

Page 24: Types of internet connections

Batch no-154

PROBLEM OF SATELLITEThere is a phenomenon called

rain fade that most subscribers to satellite-based TV services report. Rain fade occurs when a wall of rain is so dense that the satellite signal has trouble making it to the user’s satellite dish. This degradation of the satellite signalcan result in decreased picture quality, ideation, and even total signal loss

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF POPULAR CONNECTIONS

TYPES ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

Analog modem

· Low cost· Availability: able to getinternet service almostanywhere in the country· Simplicity

· Slowest type of connectionavailable· Unable to talk on thetelephone when using internet

ISDN · Faster than analog modems· Widely available in mostmetro areas· Able to talk on the telephone and surf the web simultaneously· Always on connection

· Not dramatically faster thananalog service· The access charge is usuallyper-minute.· Not available everywhere

Cable · Always on connection · High speed

· Variability of speed · Upstream speed limited

Page 26: Types of internet connections

DSL · Always on connection· High speed· Promise of affordability· Uses existing lines

· Not available everywhere dueto the signal limitations based on the distance.

Leased line · Available virtuallyeverywhere in the regionalserving area· Always on connection

· Too expensive to theindividual and small business

Satellite · Available virtuallyeverywhere in the regional serving area· Always on connection

· Sensitive to the heavy rainy day

SUMMARYFaced with the various types of Internet connections, from the traditional dial-up access to the many different broadband options, Internet users probably would like to ask “which is the best?” The answer really depends on the user’s priorities and needs. For example, analog modem access may be enough for those who use the Internet for only a few hours a week. If someone uses the Internet heavily, and needs a high-bandwidth connection for a job in a multimedia area, (s) he has to consider the more advanced technologies. Also, because some of the high-speed options are available only in some locations, this will play an important role in selection.
