Democracy

Government in which citizens exercise supreme power, acting either directly or through elected officials

Examples: United States, Sweden

Monarchy

Government in which a single ruler exercises supreme power based on heredity or divine right.

Examples: Monaco, Qatar, Most Monarchy’s today are

Constitutional Monarchies…they share power with an elected body

Dictatorship

a government in which a single person or group exercises supreme power by controlling the military and police

Example: Iraq under Saddam Hussein

Republic

A nation in which supreme power rests with the citizens and is exercised by their elected representatives

Examples: United Kingdom, India

Communism

Government in which a single political party controls both the government and economy; theories by Karl Marx to create classless society

Examples: Cuba, China

Theocracy

A government headed by religious leaders; country ruled through religious law

Examples: Vatican, Iran
