    MINOR FLAME BURNS-First

    Degree

These burns only damage theepidermis, the most superficial

layer of skin The skin may turn redand mayeventually peel, but theburn should heal without a scarwithin 7 days.

Bathing the burn in cool water andapplying lotion or moisturizer willdecrease discomfort.

    Second degree- superficial

Superficial second-degree burnsdestroy the epidermis and some

dermis . These wounds often blisterand are quite painful, but they healwithin 3 weeks with minimumscarring. These burns should be

immediately immersed in coolwater. Cool water causesvasoconstriction, decreasesinflammation, and helps control

    pain.

    BLISTERS

Blisters, particularly small blisters, should beleft intact.

Large blisters can be drained via needleaspiration if sterile needles areavailable.Blistered skin is dead and the capturedfluid can providea medium for bacteriagrowth so infection is certainly possible,

even if the blister is kept intact.

    Second degree- deep

Deep second degree: Theseburns destroy the epidermis,

most of the dermis, and mostepithelial cells.

Though more dangerous than asuperficial second-degree burn, they

areless painful because nerveendings are killed. These woundsrarely blister but take weeks toheal. These burns scar a great deal.

    THIRDDEGREE

Third-degree burns are full-thickness wounds, involving the

death ofepidermis, dermis, andepidermalappendages. The burntskin often looks black, whiteandleathery on the surface; someareas

maylook blistered or appear brightred. These burns areless painfulbecause nerveendings have died.

    FOURTH DEGREE

Fourth-degree burns are burnsthat affect deep structures such

as muscle, tendon, and bone inaddition to skin. These burns arevery dangerous, will impair thelimbs functionality, and require

    hospitalattention.
