Luke 22:7-20; Acts 20:7

Memory Block“Praise the Lord and worship him. Tell everyone what he has done and how great he is. Sing praise to the LORD, because he has done great things. Let all the world know what he has done” (Isaiah 12:4, 5).

Lesson Goals• Tell what Jesus asked His friends to do.• Name special things we remember Jesus did. • Continue memorizing and explain Isaiah 12:4, 5. • Demonstrate ways to worship Jesus by remembering how special He is. • Joyfully worship God and Jesus.

BIBLE SEARCH

SuppliesBibles, reproducible p. 6

Before class, make copies of page 6, one per child. Be prepared to answer children’s questions about Passover by reading Exodus 11 and 12.

When Jesus ate a Passover meal with His apostles, He talked to them about remembering. Passover was a time for remembering. Have the children find Luke 22:8 in their Bibles and ask a volunteer to read aloud that verse. Then hand out copies of page 6 and read together about Passover.

• What did Jesus and His followers remember at the Passover meal? (How God helped their ancestors long ago in Egypt.)

BIBLE STORY

SuppliesBible, flat bread (or bread made without yeast), reproducible p. 7, scissors (optional: Bible-times costume)

Before class, cut apart the letters on page 7. The Bible story is told in the first person by the apostle John. If possible, wear a Bible-times costume as you tell the story. Or you may want to arrange for someone else to tell the story. If so, provide the person with a copy of the story and, if possible, a Bible-times costume to wear.

Let children sample the flat bread. Tell them that this bread is made without yeast. Jesus asked His followers to eat some bread like this to help them remember something important. Listen to see what He wanted them to remember. Have your Bible open to Luke 22.

Peter and I climbed the stairs to a large room. It was the first day of the Passover Feast. My name is John. Peter and I had just asked Jesus where we could fix our Passover meal. Jesus had told us about this room where we could get the meal ready.

Everything had happened just as Jesus said. First we followed a man walking into Jerusalem. He had carried a jar of water to this house. When he stopped here, we knew this was the place. We asked the house owner to show us the room where we could eat our Passover meal. The room was ready just like Jesus said it would be. We worked to get everything ready for the meal. We would have roast lamb, juice, bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. Peter and I were ready that evening when Jesus and the other apostles arrived. They climbed the stairs and joined us.

When everyone was ready, we reclined around the low table. As we began to eat, we remembered how God had cared for our people. Passover was a very important time for us because it helped us remember how God saved our ancestors when they were slaves in Egypt. Each food we ate helped us remember something about the time when God delivered them out of Egypt.

That Passover meal was a special time for Jesus. It was the last Passover meal He would eat with us. Jesus talked about what was going to happen to Him and how He felt. He said, “I wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I die. I will never eat another Passover meal until it is given its true meaning in the kingdom of God.”

Then Jesus did something that made that Passover very special for us. He picked up a cup of juice, thanked God for it, and gave it to us. He said, ”Take this cup and give it to everyone here.” Then He took some of the bread made without yeast. After He thanked God for the bread, Jesus broke it into pieces and gave it to us. Then Jesus said some words I still remember, “This bread will help you think of my body that is going to die for you. This juice will help you think of my blood. When you eat this bread and drink this juice, you can remember me.”

After Jesus went back to Heaven, all of us who followed Jesus did what Jesus asked. Now, instead of eating the Passover meal, we meet together on Sunday to remember Jesus. The most important thing we do is to break some bread, just like Jesus did. When we eat the bread and drink the juice, it’s always a special time for remembering all the special things Jesus has done for us.

Play the Remembering Game to help children review the Bible story. Place the eight letters (cut from page 7) face down and don’t let children see them. Ask the children the following questions. For each correct answer, a child should turn over a letter.

• Name the special meal. (Passover)

• Name who fixed the foods. (Peter and John)

• Name some of the foods they ate. (lamb, bitter herbs, juice, bread without yeast)

• Name who ate this meal. (Jesus and His apostles)

• Name where they ate the meal. (in an upstairs room in a house in Jerusalem)

• Name what Jesus gave them to eat. (bread)

• Name what Jesus gave them to drink. (juice)

• Name what Jesus asked them to do. (remember Him)

Once all the letters are turned over, have children unscramble them to find an important word (remember).

• What is the most special thing to remember Jesus did? (He died and came back to life.)

BIBLE VERSE

SuppliesBibles, reproducible p. 8, 2 index cards, marker

Before class, make enough copies of page 8 so that each group of two to three children can have a copy. Cut out the shapes and keep each set in an envelope. You may have some left from last week’s lesson. Write “Say the verses” on one index card and “Tell what the verses mean” on the other card.

Have children get into groups of two or three and give each group an envelope. Tell the groups to race to put the shapes in memory verse order and see which group gets done first.

Ask the children to sit in a circle. While saying the verses in rhythm, children are to pass the two prepared index cards around the circle. Whoever has the cards when the children are done saying the Bible memory verses, must do what the cards say. Repeat as time permits.

BIBLE AND ME

Suppliesreproducible pp. 9-11, scissors, stapler, colored pencils, crayons

Before class, make copies of pages 9-11, one of each per child. Assemble a sample booklet, following instructions on the reproducible pages.

Worshipping Jesus means telling Him how special He is. Remembering Jesus during the Lord’s Supper or communion is one time to worship Him and tell Him how special He is. Let’s work on a way to help you remember Jesus when the Lord’s Supper or communion is served.

Give each child a copy of pages 9-11. The children should cut out the pages and staple them in order to make a 12-page booklet. In the empty boxes, children can write or draw ways they can remember Jesus. Then they can color the pictures. When children are finished making their booklets, they can put them in their praise packets.

• Why do we want to remember Jesus during the Lord’s Supper or communion? (He asked us to remember Him. It’s good to remember that Jesus died for us on the cross.)

• To help you remember and worship Jesus during the Lord’s Supper or communion, what can you think about? If children need ideas, have them use their booklets.

BIBLE PROJECT

Suppliespraise packets children made in Lesson 1

Before class, see the Unit Overview for details about this project.

Use the Bible Project time for the children to finish their Remember Jesus booklets. As children finish their booklets, talk about how they can use their booklet to remember Jesus and worship Him. Then have children place their booklets in their praise packets.

Keep the praise packets in the room so children can add to them next week.

BIBLE SHARING

Suppliesflatbread, juice, cups, napkins, CD of praise music, CD player, penny

As children eat, talk about the foods Jesus and His followers ate during the Passover meal that helped them remember how God helped their ancestors when they were slaves in Egypt. Then remind children that Jesus wants us to eat bread and drink juice to remember Him and how He died on the cross for our sins.

Lead a time of worship to close. Sing worship songs to praise Jesus. Encourage the children to pray sentence prayers that worship Jesus. Suggest the following format: “Jesus, You are great! Only You can ___.” Begin with your worship prayer. Then give each child an opportunity to pray.

The Passover was a time for Jesus and His followers to remember. They remembered how God helped their ancestors when they were slaves in Egypt.

During Passover, a lamb was killed and roasted. It reminded them of the lambs killed in Egypt to protect the Israelites from death.

Jesus and His followers ate the lamb with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. The bitter herbs reminded them of the time of slavery in Egypt. The unleavened bread was made without yeast because there was no time to let the dough rise.

Jesus and His followers reclined at the table. This showed they were no longer slaves. It was a way to celebrate what God had done. They were remembering the night God passed over.
